For many Dynamo fans it has been a long time coming.
The acquisition of a “designated player” has been desired by Dynamo fans.
Some may have wanted a “name” dp but in the end the Dynamo and head coach Dominic Kinnear got the player they wanted after a “dance” that took place over two years after Kinnear had identified Boniek Garcia in an international friendly at Robertson Stadium between Honduras and El Salvador.
Personally, I could care less about the dp label and so should you.
What we should desire is a quality player that can add an element to the Dynamo that makes them a more dangerous attacking team and takes them to a higher place.
As cited before on the radio and at this website, MLS players like David Ferreira (FC Dallas), Freddy Montero (Seattle), Javier Morales (RSL), all began as non-dp’s.
Here are a few thoughts on Honduran Oscar Boniek Garcia:
1.) IMPACT
He is coming in as a DP signing and expectations are going to be high on the 27 year old Honduran.
He will be expected to platform this team to the next level and bring width and penetration out wide which has been needed by the “Orange”.
2.) DRIBBLER
I made this point on a recent taping on Local 2.
Fans love to watch players that take people on off the dribble, it is one of the reasons we go to a stadium.
They do in the NBA and they do in the world of soccer.
This could be a stroke of brilliance from the Dynamo as they need a player or two like this to become more unpredictable during the run of play.
It is exciting and Oscar Boniek Garcia can unbalance defenses simply by breaking opponents down and forcing decisions and adjustments.
Talk tactics all you want, but in the end individual players are the greatest strength in destroying the best laid tactical plan.
Penetration is a necessary element in any team and we can see Garcia earning a-lot of corners which plays directly into the Dynamo strength off “set pieces”.
3.) MOVEMENT/PACE
He is mobile, and quick and that will increase the overall team speed of the Dynamo and likely force opponents to defend deeper and honor this element.
He will bring possibility for Dominic Kinnear one which includes potentially using the pace of Calen Carr up front like during the playoff run last year.
Think options and possibility here!
4.) DYNAMO STRIKERS WILL LIKE THIS SIGNING
For those in the Dynamo stable of strikers they certainly have to be excited with this signing.
We can see it now……Boniek Garcia getting behind people out wide, drawing center-backs to the ball and leaving more space for Dynamo strikers.
Boniek Garcia admitted he loves to play wide on the right.
5.) PRESSURE OFF OTHERS
Not only should Boniek Garcia bring an additional element of danger to the Dynamo attack but he will help to relieve pressure off the likes of Brad Davis.
In theory this will make others around him platform.
6.) THE FINAL THIRD/POSSESSION
The Dynamo have won the possession game regularly this year yet in truth it should be yielding more goals and chances from the run of play.
This possession stat can be tricky. It is a real positive having the ball and controlling games this way.
Boniek Garcia will help in this are to make more plays, to make this possession play off!!!
7.) REACH IN HONDURAN COMMUNITY
With anywhere between 45 to 60 thousand Hondurans in Houston depending on your source of information, Boniek Garcia will hopefully tap into this vein of fans that may for the moment not be supporting MLS and the Dynamo.
This is a signing that can work both on and off the field!!!
Excited to see his drawing power.
8.) BONIEK MIDDLE NAME
Obviously when he was named it was to honor the Polish and Juventus star Zbigniew Boniek.
When at Juventus the Polish great Boniek was nicknamed “beauty at night” because of his performance during night games.
Ironically, Boniek was a dribbling master who possessed change of pace and direction.
Seems Oscar Boniek Garcia has modeled his game after the former Polish great!!
Boniek is the name he will wear on the back of his jersey .
To sum it up Oscar Boniek Garcia is not coming to the Dynamo as a Messiah but he is coming here with large expectations to take this team to another level from an attacking standpoint.
He is not here to be just another squad player, ultimately the Dynamo will want him to take the lead in games and set the tempo on the right side of the field.

I’m kinda excited about this signing. Not because of his latino heritage, or because for the DP status. I am excited because it is A signing (as the only one) that will help our team in the offensive end. Still, I want to keep the pressure on our owners AEG, Brenner DeLa Hoya, to keep on investing on this team. I am not looking for another beckham kind of signing, it doesn’t have to be a big name like Del Piero or anything atmospheric like that. It can be a not known player from the tiniest town in Iceland but as long as he sweats the shirt and his skill translates into the dynamo going to the next level then he is welcome.

We just hired a worker from Honduras and we got to talk about Garcia. He lit up like a christmas tree. He said this signing will be wonderful for the Orange. He spoke of Garcia’s speed and his dribbling ability and finally his ability to send crosses into the box. He also said the Honduran community will support this signing. it’s without saying he really liked this signing. We also spoke about Costly. I agreed that I felt he needed more time with this team and so did he. Who knows what the future will bring but I applaud the Orange for this signing and I am looling forward to one or two more.
It brings possibility, addresses a need, and brings a player with break-down capability.
Sorry Glenn one player will not turn this around. The team needs to step up, better combination play more hustle, better movement on and off the ball. We been lax on defense too.
One thing on changing match times. No one wants to see somebody get hurt but we are dealing with pros right. They know how to take care of themselves. Did we not see an older player from LA play in long sleeve’s the whole match. Other sides around the league are not changing there times. We should except it and move on.
Glenn, I thought the DP label was for real expensive, well known players like T. Henry, Beckham and Blanco. I would consider this something much less that those additions. If we were adding Drogba or even Del Piero then yes that would be a DP. I know that the club has been operating without a DP for years and after the Landin experience was a complete disaster I can see why they were so slow to pull the trigger on another DP. But really, if this their BIG signing then they are out of touch with what a DP is all about.
Glenn, I would like to see Costly come in as the second signing. This I think would be great for Honduran fans and also be a dangerous strike force with Davis, Ching, Bruin, Costly and Boniek.
