So news broke on Mexican television that their is interest in Landon Donovan at Club America in Mexico. Intriguing….I say yes. Will it happen?
Donovan would find alot of additional space in the MFL and I would love to see him racing through defenses in the Superclasico against Chivas and other high profile games in this great soccer country.
Would it be another way to gain credibility for MLS and American soccer in the eyes of Mexican fans or would be going to Mexico consider a down-grade from Europe?
Donovan would be considered a villian at first to the Mexican fans based on his exploits with the U.S. National team but his ability to speak the language and skills would ultimately win over Mexican fans.
One thing is for sure…as clearly our best American player Donovan needs to be successful in another league other than MLS . Here he has done it all. Is it time to take the Donovan show on the road again as he is clearly capable of playing in any league in the world.
Thoughts, what type of impact would Donovan going to Mexico make?
Expansion Draft takes place today and for teams it is a gamble as to who Philadelphia and Peter Nowak might NOT take. Coaches criteria in who to protect and not comes down to age, salary cap, positional needs and invididual salary.
Looking at the list there are some excellent MLS players available that could get the Philadelphia Union off on the right track. And that is a key for this franchise…first impressions and getting off to a good season next year. So does that mean the Union might take a few veterans even though they are older? I would say yeah with the likes of Amado Guevara, Luciano Emilio and Pat Onstad available. It is a big day for them as finally they can show the public that they have players.
One other thing to keep in mind is that deals are being done behind the scenes and that not all teams will lose a player.

Interesting on Donovan. Remember, Donovan only plays where he is “comfortable” and I don’t see playing in the MFL being “comfortable” for Donovan but it sure would help MLS if he did go and give the league credibility to Hispanics.
As for the expansion draft, you are the first one anywhere who mentioned Pat Onstad. Interesting but makes sense to me… Look at what Kasey Keller did to Seattle at his age. Pat would be a coach in the back.
I guess we will find out shortly…
MLS/Philadelphia not announce expansion draft results until 2pm and then we will find out who the Dynamo will be without next year.
Donovan to Mexico? That sounds crazy at first thought. I can’t see Mexican fans accepting him when there is so much animosity between our national teams. But then, if US fans in Chicago accepted Blanco, well… Will LA let him get away? I agree that it would be helpful if Donovan were successful in a league besides MLS.
I’m torn about Onstad. I think he’s got a few good years left, and I’m not ready to turn the team over to Tally Hall. Although he’s been good, you never know. Look at what happened with Zach Wells. But if they don’t take him then it’s Chabala, Mulrooney or ERob. Maybe they’ll take Clark and he’ll be successful in Europe and won’t come back.
I definitely don’t want Onstad to go. He is one of the faces of the team, in addition to being a great asset in keeping our GA count down.
Hi Glenn,
I don’t know if Donovan really comes to Mexico, the only thing I can say is that if there is a team where Donovan can play in Mexico that’s America, the most hated team here in Mexico and Donovan will fit in very good because he is the most hated american player, I never ever would have thought about it but everything can happen, and maybe it could be a good thing for both sides, let’s see what happens.
Here is the list:
Brad Knighton, David Myrie, Shavar Thomas, Jordan Harvey, Shea Salinas, Stefani Miglioranzi, Andrew Jacobson, Nick Zimmerman, Alejandro Moreno, Sebastian LeToux
Nobody taken from the Dynamo!!!!!! Yahoo! Did Dom have some pictures of Nowak dressed as a little girl or something? Wow, not smart at all for Nowak! Alejandro Moreno?????
Interesting choices by Novak, that\’s for sure.
I think Donovan can adjust to the Mexican league given enough time to acclimate himself. It could be really good for him. I can imagine him doing rather well there. Though, I still think we\’re talking loan for now. I\’m not sure MLS wants to see Donovan just yet.
Maybe is Donovan goes to MFL they can teach him how to do a penalty kick.
I was reminded that Seattle used 3 players from their expansion draft. Yeah, they were more active in player movement pre-draft, but the expansion draft is not the place to build your team.
Club America has wasted plenty of $$$ on insignificant signings. Why not on Donovan?
that abe thompson guy got picked up by RSL from the wiaver draft…FYI
Club america also has the chance to play the copa libertadores next year. So not only would donovan be playing in the mexican league, he could posibly play against the best teams from from brazil and argentina.
Thankfully, Pat nor anyone else from the Dynamo was selected in the expansion draft.
If Pat is left unprotected next year, he’s likely to go to Vancouver’s expansion team. Remember, Pat is originally from Vancouver.
Having said that, I think Pat is still playing good soccer and I’m in no hurry to see him leave the Dynamo.
nice site I visit it often….I like the discussions.
