U.S. National team report/ What does the Super Bowl mean to soccer fans?/ EPL’s intense weekend

Well kind of.
The European based players will join the squad in the near future.
Dynamo players BRIAN CHING, RICARDO CLARK and STUART HOLDEN all headed back to LA today to prepare of the February 11th match against Mexico.
Here is the squad:

Goalkeepers: Jon Busch, Will Hesmer, Matt Pickens
Defenders: Frankie Hejduk, Jonathan Bornstein, Chris Wingert, Marvel Wynne, Ugo Ihemulu
Midfielders: Brian Carroll, RICARDO CLARK, Eddie Gaven, STUART HOLDEN, Jack Jewsbury, Sasha Klejstan, Robbie Rodgers, John Thorrington
Forwards: BRIAN CHING, Ken Cooper, Charlie Davies, Chris Rolfe

This camp will keep MLS players sharp ahead of the arrival of European based players.

Who out of these players will actually make the final roster? My guess BRIAN CHING, RICARDO CLARK, Frankie Hejduk, Sasha Klejstan are virtual locks.

I would assume barring injury the lineup will look something close to this?

Goalkeeper : Tim Howard
Defenders: Steve Cherundolo, Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce or Jonathan Bornstein
Midfield: Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Ricardo Clark, DaMarcus Beasley
Withdrawn forward: Landon Donovan
Striker : Brian Ching

*Of course Dempsey and Donovan could be changed and who is to count FRANKIE HEJDUK getting some minutes. This will not be a game of experimentation for BOB BRADLEY as he will pick players that he is most confident with. Your thoughts?

SUPER BOWL WEEKEND

So I am just curious. Are you the SOCCER FAN interested in this weekend’s SUPER BOWL between ARIZONA and PITTSBURGH? Now I am sure that I will have one eye on the game somewhere but I am more stoked for the LIVERPOOL/CHELSEA game with two managers on the hot-seat in RAFA BENITEZ and FELIPE SCOLARI.
Lets not forget all the NFL influence that comes with MLS Commissioner DON GARBER who like OLIVER LUCK worked in NFL EUROPE.

This weekend in the ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE sets up to be a good one. Here are two matches to keep a particular eye on and both will be available on the FOX SOCCER CHANNEL.

MANCHESTER UNITED vs. EVERTON at Old Trafford
*United will be without Wayne Rooney facing a team that has not lost in 9 matches. Check out the form of EVERTON goalkeeper and U.S.National team keeper TIM HOWARD. HOWARD will be in goal against MEXICO on FEBRUARY 11th and has truly become a real leader for the U.S.

*LIVERPOOL VS CHELSEA
*Talk about two managers that are getting it from all sides. Former LIVERPOOL players are coming out against LIVERPOOL manager RAFA BENITEZ and his player rotation policy and the pressure is intensifying. CHELSEA manager FELIPE SCOLARI is questioned on a daily basis on everything from tactics to his adaptation to the EPL.
A win here keeps these two in the title chase……Compelling tv? Absolutely!!

Also on Sunday, one of the world’s great soccer rivalries coming from ARGENTINA. BOCA JRS. taking on RIVER PLATE in a class struggle of the greatest proportions.

FELIX GARCIA is now officially a member of the Houston Dynamo as an Adidas Generation player. Garcia was unveiled today at the DYNAMO offices during a press conference.

ON another note Monday it is expected that U.S. Soccer will formally announce that it intends to submit a bid for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups while WEMBLEY STADIUM will host the 2011 Champions League final with the ALLIANZ Arena in MUNICH, GERMANY gets it in 2012.

So what will your soccer weekend entail?

  1. Kirk says:

I think you will be pretty close with your line up projection. However, I have to admit that I would prefer to see Klejstan in place of Bradley. I know it was just one good game, and a friendly at that, but Sasha seemed to have some good chemistry working with Rico and Ching. Bradley and Rico don’t seem to play all that well together for some reason.

  2. Edwin says:

Glenn, I think with the potential 50 games the Dynamo will play in 09: 30 regular MLS season games, 5 CCL games at least possibly 9 or 11, 3 US open Cup games, 4 playoff games??? I think this kid needs to play atleast 15 games, hopefully 10 starts. He could play vs San Jose, KC, Seattle teams that might struggle.
Glenn I’m curious, why Frankie Hedjuk, he hasn’t even been playing, Bob didn’t think he was worthy by calling Wynne, Wingert, Marshall, Goodson etc. He is too old, I would rather call Spector or Demerit? I hope Cooper or Davies get to be on the bench, puling for Kenny!

  3. wren says:

    Kljestan before Beasley.

  4. Mike says:

I would rather see Michael Orozco, or Wingert over Cherundolo. I know Michael is use to being center back.
Glenn, I agree that Bob will probably start RICO and BRADLEY cuz he wants the pair to succed, he wants both players on the field. Unfortunately it won’t work out, one is more effective when the other is subed for a player like Benny Feilhaber. That’s why “Paco” Torres will be an option especially after a solid game for Copa Libertadores. Not only was he involved in attacks he was also a threat to score. I see Sasha as a good bench player for the MNT.

  5. michael says:

I see Kljestan coming off the bench if they need a spark in the second half.

  6. Edwin says:

The thing about Beasley is, he can play against Mexico, they struggle with him, plus remember they are hurting, and his speed might be crucial, don’t sleep on him, I know he hasn’t been his old usual self but the guy can play, he did score twice against Cuba, and even vs T&T he started to create good plays and made some really sweet passes.

  7. Glenn Davis says:

For sure a lineup of proven and experienced players with the potential for a “Bradley wildcard”.
If Pavel Pardo plays , how does he deal with youth in the middle of the field? Injury problems for Mexico yet that might even be a blessing for El Tri.

  8. Dave Clark says:

    Seattle teams that might struggle.

Hope your coach agrees and makes the mistake resting guys against the Rave Green.

  9. Evan says:

Frankie is a good choice because he is smart and fast. He can help lead the backline. I am more excited for the Liverpool v Chelsea match too. We aren’t into American football in my house. I don’t think it is a bad sport only it just isn’t anything I care about. It is very slow and very hard to watch.

  10. FuelMonkey says:

In terms of line-up, replace DMB with Torres, Clark with Bradley and add Kljestan. Latest reports from Germany have Cherundolo out with injury for this weekend’s match, so will he be match fit for Mexico? If not, why not stick with Wynne?

  11. yossarin says:

Dave Clark, Dom prioritizes MLS games. The Dynamo won’t send a B team.

The SuperBowl is more pagaentry than about the game. I can never remember who wins from year to year b/c the ads are more memorable. It’s a unofficial holiday and most of the attraction are parties with friends to watch the game to drink/eat. DVR it instead and fast forward through the 45 second breaks between plays.

Felix seemed like a good guy though he didn’t talk much during the meet and geet. He was seated around his family and a Laredo Heat FO official. Some of the Dynamo players attended. The Dynamo really need to learn how to plan events ahead with more than 6 hrs notice. Still great turnout from the die hards

  12. Web says:

I always find the Superbowl is a great time to visit the Auto Show, everybody else is home watching the game. And there are always other people with orange jerseys on.

  13. johnny says:

personally im a big football fan also its a pretty good game cardinalds offense Fitzgerald Boldin James and Warner against Polamalu and defensive player of the year harrisson. but i pick the Cardinalds to win even though they eliminated my Eagles.

Now to soccer Mexico has alot injuries Magallon and Guardado key ones but they have players such as Edgar Castillo and Pinto to fill those roles. Marquez is playing for sure so the defense is stable. the midfield wit pardo zinha medina and leandro is also balanced.. its just the offense that lacks firepower with Vuoso Nery or Bravo

  14. Stephen says:

I’ll be watching the semis/final of the UNCAF tourney, along with some games from the Mexican league this weekend. Hopefully I’ll get to play Sunday morning, before watching the commercial fest known as the Super Bowl.

  15. wren says:

    Throwball…yawn.

Here’s to the Toffees turning over ManUre and C’MON CHELSEA! C’MON CHELSEA! C’MON CHELSEA!

  16. Offebacher says:

A little bit of everything for me this weekend. Europe in full swing, FMF, UNCAF, Sub 20’s and I may even check a little of the throwball. In Honor of Pat Tillman I personally favor AZ even though they will probably not win. Back to our favorite game: First game of the Bundesliga after the winterbreak has Hamburg leading Bayern 1:0 at the halfway point. Donovan still on the bench, maybe he will make an appearance later.
