I am a big fan of what Seattle had done this year in MLS. It has been a needed shot in the arm and lets face it …it has exposed some ownership groups as to their investment in GROWING the sport and it has put to rest lots of excuses like fans can’t be drawn during a weekday game, fans can’t be drawn on Saturday or Sunday afternoon etc.
Secretly even you hardcore fans know that Seattle is helping to take the league higher and set higher standards .
So they will sell out again this Thursday and I wonder what will be the response of the Dynamo fans in the return leg on a Sunday afternoon at Robertson Stadium on the 8th.
Will Robertson be sold out?

It is time for the local soccer community to get “all hands on deck” to help sell out Robertson and get games re-scheduled on the afternoon of Sunday the 8th.
It is time to go to your local associations and have your wants heard about re-scheduling games..this is not July 15th and a sweatbox at Robertson .
This is the playoffs and to help young players get a grasp of the bigger picture and to dream a little bit they need to be aware of this game and that awareness occurs with re-scheduling. So HYSA, TYSA, STYSA, BAYSA leaders…you will be watching the game I am sure……..so lets make sure our youth players and parents have the same option as you do and lets grow this beautiful sport together!!!!!!! By the way should youth soccer leaders just be concerned about their league or should they set an example of leadership setting an example to our youth and parents that soccer is bigger and global!!!

By the way Drew Carey was on the field celebrating with the Sounders after their win over FC Dallas and it’s time we put Oscar De La Hoya on his trail……I am tired of seeing Drew celebrate…….

Up until now seeing Drew celebrate was good fun. I’m part of the crowd that loves what the Sounders have done for the American game. Into the playoffs in the first year is amazing! The sellout crowds and the INVOLVED ownership can only make you smile. But now it is time to see quality ball prevail. I only hope that it comes in orange. We match up well and have something to prove. Does MLS have an away goal tie breaker? With or without the Dynamo need the push to do well in Seattle so that we can show our game at the Rob. It’s key. I just wish I didn’t have to Ref a High School match that night so I could catch all of it.

  2. Christopher says:

I didn’t know how prescient I had been on my previous post re: league mediocrity.

Per Goal.com’s Luis Bueno: “We’re not exactly talking about titans battling it out for a playoff spot. In fact, let’s do some math here: that’s six teams with a combined 60-61-53 record – in other words, more losses than wins – fighting for the right to participate in the MLS playoffs, the right to contend for MLS Cup.” “Statistically speaking, MLS teams have a better chance of making the playoffs than missing them. Of the 15 teams in the league, eight get in – which means 53 percent of the teams in the league get into the postseason. In 2010, 50 percent of the teams will get in, which is only slightly better. Still, it will be the first season in league history that won’t feature more than half of the teams in the postseason.” “MLS continues to allow nearly anyone into the playoffs. While this current system is nowhere near as laughable at the previous system that allowed 80 percent of its teams into the postseason, that played out the entire regular season only to eliminate two teams from contention for the MLS Cup, the 2009 playoffs will still feature two teams who had mediocre seasons, at best.

New England had a minus-four goal differential – the only team with a goal differential in the negative – while winning just two of their last nine games this season. The Revs’ offense was not exactly scintillating either, scoring two goals in four October contests.

Real Salt Lake finished with an astounding 11 road losses; only the New York Red Bulls had more road losses than RSL.

But in MLS, those numbers don’t matter. In fact, those kinds of numbers get rewarded.”

Sorry, Glenn, but I had to post. And to the rest of you that may think I’m an Orange hater, I ain’t. I’m a fan of the game, have season tiks, etc., play myself recreationally. I’ll gladly cheer the opponent if their success and goals are a result of heads up, thought provoking, high-skill level football. Problem is, I used to cheer the Dynamo alot more than I do now. And I’m frustrated over what has happened with the team. DeRo was going to eventually return to Canada, I think we all knew that. But we’ve had a string of questionable decisions….Too many players disappear for long portions of the game. Too many fouls, yellow and red cards, etc. Someone recently posted than Dom et al inherited a really good team when they packed it up and came from San Jose, but slowly that squad has disintegrated [Barrett, anyone ?] and those brought in to fill the holes… Carvaccio, Akinbiyi, Oduro, Thompson [yet unproven, admittedly], Landin [how many games will it take to get 'fit' ?]… haven’t. Dalglish, Ngwenya, Kamara [with all your faults]… how I miss you now.

I hope to see a victory in Seattle, but my brain is telling me it’s unlikely – Jaqua and Moreno and Lundjberg are coming down the pike.

  3. Bart-1 says:

Does anyone feel sorry for the Colorado Rapids and Kansas City Wizards? At least DC United and Toronto FC have active owners and fans who seem to be serious about winning. Seattle has as an expansion team put the former teams to shame. I wouldn’t be surprised if Philadelphia does also. Look at how even these cities have come up with money for new soccer specifc stadia. The Houston City Council, Mayor White, and the Harris County Comissioners are a embarrassment to this city and this team’s fans. AEG, the Dynamo and its front office, and the fans here deserve better.

  4. Donjuego says:

Sorry Christopher, but I just find you post out-of-touch with reality.

    – Of course the teams battling for the last playoff spots have a combined sub-.500 record. Think about it! It has to be that way — mathematically.

    – You complain about too many teams into the playoffs? 1/2 of the Hex in CONCACAF qualifies for the World Cup. Group play in all tournaments qualifies 1/2 the group for the next round. MLS seems very consistent with soccer traditions.

    – The Dynamo just finished 1 point off the pace for the Supporters Shield. And your complaining saying a good team from 5 years ago has disintegrated? This borders on the absurd.

    – The hardest thing in MLS is to be good and stay good. Dom Kinnear has been competitive every year now for six years. It is an unequaled record of success in the history of the league.

A clear objective assessment has to conclude that the Dynamo are doing great. Perhaps they don’t win Thursday night on the road. Expecting a win would be foolish. However, all the Dynamo have to do is keep is close and 11/8 will be decisive, not 10/29.

  5. Garret says:

I totally agree that what Seattle has done for MLS this year is off the charts – and thank God somebody stepped up and did it. They certainly have exposed ownership groups and while there are owners in places like Colorado, Dallas, and New England that stand out like a sore thumb, Dynamo ownership needs to answer the call as well (we’ve seen Oscar at one game). I was at the game in Seattle in July and the presentation of the event was NFL quality. We don’t do a bad job here in Houston but we can do much better. Now that I’ve given them some props, let’s kick their *#$!

  6. Leo says:

Drew Carey is great and I love the extra spice that he has added to the game. De La Hoya really needs to start showing his mug a little more; especially considering that his boxing career is over.

  7. Edwin says:

Don Juego, I’m sorry but the most annoying point in your argument towards Christopher’s point is to insinuate that nobody has maintained a competitive level for 6 years? The Winnigest teams in MLS LA Galaxy and DC United were plenty competitive for almost a decade or more, DC started with 3 MLS Cups in 4 years, after that they still maintained a high level and eventually got back on the playoffs after 4 seasons of not making it but still maintained a competitive style and barely missed the playoffs on the 4th seed from the East.

The Galaxy made the playoffs for the 1st 10 years and had 5 MLS Cup appereances with 2 wins and 2 Supporter’s Shield, 2 runner ups to Supporters Shield and 5 Confernce championship not to mention the 2nd Concacaf Championship for MLS in 2000, and the US Open Cups and final appereances.

The point is that MLS is too much of a parity league, I think there is great parity but the fact is that most teams don’t ever get past 60+ points, with a good 19+ wins, that would be about 57 points and then you can have I don’t know about 6 ties and maybe 5 loses that would give you 63 points.

I think we can all agree too many teams play for a tie, Glenn has talked about this and DC United guy who was on the show talked about it as well, he said how they like to play to win and have an offensive type of soccer display.

Seattle has for the most part put up amazing soccer, yeah they have had some loses but come on they’re an expansion team and technically had the 4th best record or 3rd if HOU & LA are tied for the 2nd best!

I think with time it will get better there are about 5 great teams in MLS CLB, LAG, HOU, SEA, CHV USA, and then there are 3 or 4 good teams in CHI, NE, and RSL ( they just can’t win on the road?)

There about 4 teams on the border of being good just need consistancy and some continuity those are TFC, DC, Colorado, KC, FC Dallas

Teams like San Jose, New York and I guess FC Dallas have some work to do but look at Dallas they have barely missed the playoffs for about 3 seasons now?

  8. Edwin says:

BTW, Chicago Fire made the playoffs for the 1st 6 seasons they played from 1998-2003, missed it in 2004 and have made it from 2005 until now for 5 straight seasons that’s what 11 out of 12

So yeah there’s been good competitive teams, New England probably has one of the most competitive teams without a championship. They made the playoffs this year with the last game and once again kept their 8 year streak the longest one afte the Galaxy’s 10 run for the 1st decade of the league, and with all the young players Nicol got last year and potential of Taylor Twellman, Chris Albright and Steve Ralston getting healthy next year and a healty Matt Reis for most of the season they can easily be among the top 3 or 2 in the east next year, unless of course Chicago keeps it up, Toronto manages to get it together by getting rid of Guevara since now they have him, DeRo and their DP DeGuzman essentially 3 players that play the same type of position and DC could easily get better with their 2 1st round rookies Chris Pontious and Rodney Wallace having a full year under their belt

So we’ll see, I hope the Rob sells out, they almost 30K for the Galaxy game, lets see if they can get 30-32K for playoff match up against Seattle

  9. ryan says:

in 2011, with philly, vancouver and portland, 8 of 18 teams will make the playoffs. percentage-wise, it will be more difficult to reach the playoffs in mls than in the nba or nhl. time will solve this problem (and argument).

can we all stand up to don garber and demand a single table already? next year is a true, home-and-home 30 game schedule. with por and van, it’ll be 34 games…almost on par with every other world league. conferences are meaningless. let’s get this done.

  10. Ramiro says:

I watch as many mls games as I can but rarely pay attention to the the fan groups chants. I was watchingthe fire vs chivas USA and payed attentionto the fans and I have to say that el batallon “chants” have gotten boring. Not because they’re repetitive but because they’re actual songs with the words changed and when they game gets kinda slow, they stop singing, which is even more boring. All I have to say is it’s playoff time….we need to pump up the stadium. Create some adrenaline pumping chants not converted pop, salsa, and cumbia songs…

  11. Trey says:

Donde estas Senor Oscar de la Hoya? I attended the announcement party downtown two years ago with the presentation (and hope of those of us in attendance) by the President (vice pres?) of Anchutz Entertainment that Oscar de la Hoya, as new co-owner of the Dynamo, would “become the Face of the men in Orange”. Oscar seemed to grab this new title in his speech at the ceremony, then all but completely disappeared. He did in fact attend one match last year and dawned Dynamo orange in one of his fights last year. He again attended a match once earlier this year, but a bit of disappointment when finding out he was really in town to promote a boxing match at Toyota Center for Golden Boy Productions. Mr. de la Hoya, you are a very respected sportsman across fans of All sports. Perhaps one of the most recognized and liked among all sports in the US. Please consider re-establishing a presence in marketing of the Dynamo and MLS soccer with match and media appearances. Attendence at the playoff match vs. Sounders on November 8th would be a great place to start! We would love to see you there, on the field / in the stands! You can start a new company “Forever Orange Productions”!

  12. Steve says:

What is the status of the stadium? Noticed an article on the Chronicle’s homepage about Houston Sports Authority requiring taxpayer money to pay for debts and wonder the timing of this article in relation to the Dynamo’s stadium proposal.
