Simply ask yourself if you ever thought RSL would win the league title last year? Wild, wacky world of MLS got off to a start this weekend with an abundance of goals !!! Now before I get into the Dynamo/FC Dallas game I condition this post with a few things to keep in mind. It is game one of a long season and the conditions at FC Dallas were windy which clearly influenced the game.

WINNER: Left back Mike Chabala who scored his first ever MLS goal. Do you think he would even be in MLS at this point if not for the valuable time he gained playing in the then MLS reserve division. His ability to get a forward was a benefit to the Dynamo and he produced the lone Dynamo goal off an excellent right-footed finish. Chabala reminds us that the CBA agreement and re-examining a reserve division is a must in the future and should never have been abolished.
TOUGH DAY: Brian Ching who got little to attack from wide areas when it came to delivery and Eddie Robinson who went off with an injured hamstring and is out for Thursday night’s match against Real Salt Lake.
GOOD FORTUNE: From the 70-76th minute Jeff Cunningham had three dangerous chances against a Dynamo defense that was reeling. Fortunately Cunningham did not make the Dynamo pay.
LITTLE IMPACT: College Station’s and FC Dallas’s Brek Shea had no impact on this game.
DYNAMO SUBS: Center back Ryan Cochrane came on and got the business done in place of Eddie Robinson. Cory Ashe came in on the right side of midfield for Brian Mullan and did not seem comfortable while Luis Landin for Dominic Oduro was tough to judge although Landin nearly got on the end of an Andrew Hainault cross late in the match.
MOST DANGEROUS DYNAMO PLAYERS OTHER THAN CHABALA THE GOAL SCORER: Dominic Oduro stretched FC Dallas on a few occasions with his pace including only 5 minutes in. His one on one chance against FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala in the 30th minute was his best chance. Brad Davis three long range testers including a blast off the free kick that missed by inches in the 61st minute. Geoff Cameron also had some efforts from long range on a few occasions so on this day the Dynamo did not hesitate to let go from longer range.
GOOD GOALS: The goals came two minutes apart from Mike Chabala (36th) and Attiba Harris (38th).
RECOGNITION OF SHOOTING OPPORTUNITIES: Last year it was far to say at times the Dynamo over-passed it. If Geoff Cameron and Brad Davis continue to shoot for longer range the goals will follow.
The Dynamo played a bit different based on personel, and the game was quite direct at times. Cameron is still a work in progress in central midfield when it comes to dictating and controlling a game with his decisions, finding ways to get the ball. The game was direct and it might just be a bit more like that this year without the controlling prescence of Stuart Holden but don’t make the mistake of comparing the two as they are completely different players. Brad Davis is now the one player more than any other on the Dynamo that can put his foot on the ball and calm a game down, he needs to get alot of the ball every game and continues to seek it out inside which will give Mike Chabala at the right times the option to get forward. The conditions were windy making it a tough day to play but a point on the road in game one against your rival is a good start to 2010 from a result stand-point.
WHERE THE HELL WERE THE FANS…..? Incredible field, decent day except for the wind, very interesting team in FC Dallas, rivalry match, home opener and the Dallas Cup Youth International tournament going on and only 8K fans and 20% were Orange clad Dynamo fans? Not to mention the game featured two time MLS Cup winners who got to the Western Conference Final last year. I could not find any information on FC Dallas prior to the game generated out of the Dallas Fort Worth area. The papers on game day had the normal singular, “hey we need an FC Dallas article”.
Other MLS Games:
Real Salt Lake 3 at San Jose 0:
Embarrassing start for San Jose losing at home 3-0 and losing Chris Leitch to a red card. Granted the goals were excellent from RSL. An amazing bomb from Javier Morales (my vote for goal of the week), a super chip from Fabian Espindola and then another amazing Morales effort off the free kick. Arturo Alvarez and San Jose suffering from stage fright according to coach Frank Yallop. Bobby Convey subbed out at halftime for San Jose was less than impressive. Real Salt Lake living up to the MLS Cup Champion label.
Chicago 0 at New York 1:
Great stadium, great win in an ok game. New York is clearly a better organized and defined team based on the games that I have seen. Linpere hits a bending screamer for the game’s lone goal. Brian McBride over-head kick goes off the post after “Bouna time” Coundoul shenanigans. Nice to see New York looking competitive but will they still be coming out to Red Bull Arena come the dog days of July and August ? I hope so!! Thierry Henry, Raul or a superstar signing in their future?
Toronto FC 0 at Columbus 2
Starting for center back Chad Marshall, Andy Iro scored the game winning goal and became the hero of the day. Guillermo Barros Schelotto Toronto FC lose in the debut of Preki which will only add fuel to the fire in Canada.
DC 0 at KC 4
KC crushes DC and former coach Curt Onalfo in a battle between two teams that look alot different. Former Houston area players Kei Kamara (Dynamo) and Davey Arnaud (Nederland, TX) get the opening two goals. One game and a heavy loss leads to heavy pressure in the already pressure cooker atmosphere of DC United .
Colorado 1 at Chivas USA
Debutante Martin Vazquez and Chivas USA lose out on an Omar Cummings goal at the Home Depot Center. Colin Clark returns for the Rapids three pronged attack which includes Cummings and Conor Casey.
THUMBS UP:
*THOSE WHO TRAVELED: From Dynamo fans, to RSL fans, Chicago…you are making an impact!!!
* GREAT GOALS: We saw alot of them during week one of MLS. From the wonder hits from Javier Morales from RSL, Joel Lindpere of New York’s swerving 18 yard hit to Attiba Harris of FC Dallas cutting to his right and hitting and accurate blast against Houston. Keep the goals coming……
YELLOW CARD: Coach PETER NOWAK of Philly focusing on Freddy Ljunberg and Seattle opposed to his team after a 2-0 loss on Thursday.
PLAYERS OUT OF POSITION: There is a good chance that Jonathan Bornstein and Heath Pearce could be a starting left back at the next World Cup.
Problem is neither are currently playing that postion in MLS. Bornstein played as a center back for Chivas USA in their
1-0 loss to Colorado while Heath Pearce played right back for FC Dallas. Neither looked comfortable.
FANS ? Great stadiums, some beautiful looking surfaces (San Jose and FC Dallas come to mind) and good atmosphere’s but alot of empty seats (LA, Chivas, Dallas, Columbus) for the opening of the season!

I traveled to Frisco for the game but I only had to drive from a pitch in Plano after refereeing! Pathetic turnout for Dallas fans as usual, but the pitch looked magnificent. Great turnout from Houston and I met some good people that I sat by at the game.
I need to watch the game on Tivo to really see what I think but I agree that Davis needs to touch the ball more. Landin was so close! A point on the road is a good thing but I do hate FC Frisco and I wish the Dynamo could have won.
Thanks for the update and thoughts K1p.
Glenn – My hat’s off to Dynamo fan’s that made road trip, same for TFC bunch that traveled to Crew Stadium.
What a shame in Dallas , only 8,000 showed.Yet last season when I traveled from here in Vegas to see game at Pizza Hut Park, saw sign advertising North Texas Soccer Assoc.
The NTSA claims to have over 195,000 player’s registered. Would behove this “soccer committed” organization to encourage it’s members to show some support for it’s professional team and come to some FCD games!
Before this team calls another city home.
My goal of the opening week goes to Omar Cummings of the Rapids vs. Chivas. His lightning quick shot from top of the box was top shelf. He cut that on a dime.
William,
My kid used to play in the FC Dallas youth soccer system and they got free tickets. There must be several hundred in that club alone. Also, my girlfriend was a coach and team manager on several Dallas academy teams that were NTSA and they were offered a great deal on tickets. The problem as I see it us two fold. 1. Dallas “fans” only support a winner. 2. The drive to Frisco is a beating. Even though we were offered free and discounted tickets, we didn’t feel like the drive up the tollway to see a game (unless it was against the Dynamo of course!). I am so glad that it looks like Houston is building downtown. I think the situation would be slot different if Dallas played in Dallas.
Kudos to the Dynamo fans that attended the game. We were louder and had more passion than the dead and empty FC Dallas PHP crowd. It is a shame to see the difficulties up there.
First week observations:
– The two Freddie’s whining and diving is embarassing. Really — it should not be tolerated. Ljundberg has become sickening to watch. I agree that Novak was wrong to speak out — but I cut him slack because he is absolutely right.
– Road point against competitive team is a fine start for Dynamo. Game was very ugly with little flow. Wind? Rust?
– Bad result for TFC but they actually looked better than a team reported in disarray. Jury still out. TFC easiily could have gotten a point out of that game. Columbus is still in form.
– Colorado genius to move Marvel Wynn to centerback. Allowed for MF squeezing high-line defense that Chivas could not get behind due to Wynn’s recovery speed.
– KC better? DC worse? Some of both. KC going to surprise folks this year and be competitive. DC was never in that game.
– How attractive is watching soccer in RB Arena?!? Wow. How horrible is listening to ESPN’s audio. Egad!
– SJE and NER looked poor. Rimando and Ricketts had little to do. Amazingly, NER could have gotten a point. Nothing convincing about the Galaxy yet, unlike RSL that closed the deal on the road.
Made the trip to Frisco and it was aweome to see so much orange. However, I was completely dumbfounded as to the low turnout of Dallas fans. I’ve seen more fans at a youth game. The pitch looked awesome. The Dynamo looked like a team playing the season-opener. Some players in different positions. Some players coming back from injury.
Heck of a time yesterday at my first regular season away game. Plenty of icey cold cervezas, and a terrific sea of orange. Pulling up around the stadium to reveal an entire quadrant of the parking lot blanketed in Orange was awesome. Took a little friendly fire from one of the big flags, and the tambo left some bruises, but a point on the road is a point on the road. And we made FCF fans look ridiculous. Again.
God willing, I’ll be able to see RB Arena in person this June.
Nothing rhymes with Orange!
Hard to believe that with the Dallas Cup going on that more fans would not have shown. Serious disconnect going on in the land of Frisco.
Isnt Van der Bergh still teamless? im just saying…
My understanding is that he is and that New York may be showing interest. FC Dallas may have moved him due to a want to become more athletic and youthful. No problem if that is the direction Hyndman is taking the team but you will need more out of Brek Shea who was rubbed out by Brian Mullan and Andrew Hainault.
Great stuff, Glenn. I heard that Navas Cobo looked good tonight in the US U-20’s 1-0 loss to Mexico’s U-20 side.
Glen,
Unfortunately, the economy(job market) needs much more improvement in L.A. and surrounding areas. Also, the novelty or newness of HDC has worn off. The new chicken restaurant(concession)that took over in HDC might be an improvement, yet inadequate concessions hurts selling the overall product. When competing against other sporting arenas such as The Staples Center I feel HDC still needs to improve their food concessions. It would help if season ticket holders got a discount in food purchases and everyone would save a few dollars on parking.
The new stadiums in New Jersey and Philadelphia will help, but after a few years the novelty of the stadium wears off and the product has to sell the tickets. I would advise the Dynamo to really work on the overall fan experience in their new stadium because the economy will always be subject to the business cycle. If an excellent job is done in designing the stadium the Houston Dynamo will be able to win many new fans of the sport and do well at the gate even in less than perfect economic times.
My wife and I traveled to the game, and easily found the Dynamo parking lot on the east side. It was so nice to be greeted by so my Dynamo fans in Frisco. I’ve been reading a lot of criticism n many different places of having Cameron at Holden’s spot, but I’ve got to say that we really need to give him a chance to be who he is there. He is a very dynamic player that brings superior athletic ability and field sense into every game. No doubt our attack will have to change based on what he can do there, but it is my belief that, after watching him play for the last two seasons, his agressiveness will turn into pressure that our opponents will not be able to defend. making them make decisions quickly that will leave open shots. Let’s just let our guys get used to each other, and I’m positive Geoff will show us what a prize we really have in him.
Not sure if Real is that good or San Jose is that bad but they clearly laid down an early marker in the West. And no offense, but New England and DC couldn’t beat Strake Jesuit right now. Oh my how far the mighty have fallen.
I saw what I expected from the Dynamo. Because of all the legit talent we’ve lost, the reality is that this is a team that will take a few games to find its feet but the good news is that all of the raw elements are still there. Let’s face it, the Dynamo are unlikely to score 4 or 5 goals a game, but w/the experience of Onstad and the back line, they should be competitive in every match and favorites to win in most. The Dynamo can’t continue to put the bulk of the scoring weight on Ching’s shoulders because we always suffer as a one-trick pony. I want to see Cameron, Davis, Landin, and Oduro assume Dom’s challenge to ratchet up their game and fill the creative void lost from Holden and DeRo.
