It’s interesting how systems become vogue and sometimes fashionable, coaches actually believe in them more than their players on many occasions.
Know matter how you start, whether in a 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 4-3-3 or whatever, it is just a starting point that will morph into all kinds of other things in games during different time periods.
This fascination with systems or tactics is great for the fans and discussion but what we should really focus on is who is truly believing in their squad enough to try to come and dictate play as opposed to react to it. I, like the next guy, loves a collective, warrior spirit like night of defending where a teams lines are tight, players cover each other wonderfully and put on a masterful defensive performance daring an opponent to break them down (think Inter Milan here when manager Jose Mourinho said he told his players not to keep the ball because he did not want them to lose their shape in the 2nd leg against Barcelona in the Champions League ).
What is really important to focus on is the type of attitude that a team carries in a game that leads outsiders to believe if you are a team that is truly playing to attack and win, or play defensively preying on a mistake or a goal on the break. The latter leads to boring games.
I applaud the coaches that come “out to play” but it is clear that certain teams are seriously flooding midfield these days especially on the road, committing little forward and taking minimal risk in the so called 4-5-1. It is a bore if the two wide players are truly “sitting in” in midfield, it doesn’t work if your singular striker can’t maintain possession long enough for others to provide support or get beyond the ball. How many times have we seen this solitary striker besieged by defenders only to lose the ball with few even making an effort to support him. This type of soccer is necessary sometimes based on injury, volume of schedule in MLS but if you are thinking about putting people in seats you better think again if this is the “style” or “purpose” of play you have chosen.
Lets hope this is a trend that does not continue in MLS.
FOCUS ON FITNESS
That is what is happening in U.S. National team camp right now in Princeton, New Jersey under U.S. manager Bob Bradley. Make no mistake from a physical standpoint excluding injured players, Bob Bradley will have these men physically ready. Check out some of the faces in training and insight from Jonathan Spector, Herculez Gomez and Michael Bradley at http://www.ussoccer.com
The U.S. vs. England looms. Lets hope it is not true that Jozy Altidore went up to David Beckham at an LA Lakers game and predicted 3-0 for the U.S. No motivational speeches needed JA.
PELADA THE MOVIE TONIGHT AT STUDIO MOVIE GRILL TOWN AND COUNTRY LANE
I highly recommend this movie for soccer fans. This is not fictitious and chronicles the travels of two former college soccer players as they seek out small-sided games around the globe. Both Gwendolyn Oxenham and Luke Boughan have both been on the radio show on Sports Talk 790. Don’t miss this one…http://www.pelada-movie.com
DYNAMO THOUGHTS
With Pat Onstad and Andrew Hainault in Buenos Aires, Argentina with Canada to take on Lionel Messi and company it means some changes are in the offing for the Dynamo.
Goalkeeper Tally Hall is set to get his first ever MLS start and minutes Saturday against DC United. This is a big moment for Tally who did get games in last years Concacaf Champions League. The hard work, training and being prepared for his moment will play out this weekend.
Another question is where will Richard Mulrooney play? Does he start at right back this weekend or does Craig Waibel? Does he play in central midfield where Lovel Palmer has drifted off a bit lately? Corey Ashe has also hit a mini- wall a bit, is it time for a Danny Cruz start?
Will Eddie Robinson be deemed fit against DC and return to the lineup or could Ryan Cochrane get the start alongside of Bobby Boswell?
Could Cam Weaver play a part against DC? Lots of questions and possibilities sourround Saturday’s game against DC United.
MANCHESTER UNITED vs. MLS ALL STARS
This is going to be an amazing capper to the World Cup, yes the famed Red Devils with history and names like Charlton, Law, Cantona, Best, Viollet (look him up) and Robson to name a few are coming to our fair city to play the All Star game at Reliant Stadium on July 27th, United then travel to Guadaljara on the 30th to open the brand new Estadio Chivas. I was at the press conference Tuesday that included Don Garber the MLS Commissioner and a Manchester United executive by the name of RIchard Arnold. As the MC of the event I made very sure not to mention Chelsea although the Commish did.
What a great event this is going to be.

Dynamo players, Dynamo girls, great soccer fans, atmosphere plus food and beverage can’t be beat. Oh, and the best in soccer talk with you the fans of Houston and beyond. Make plans to get out and celebrate the World Cup starting at these venues!!!
FIESTA SMART SOCCER TIPS WITH GLENN DAVIS
I am proud of this tips card that Fiesta has produced for me because I believe if parents and youth players sit down and discuss them it will lead to go dialogue.
Lets get out of this habit of believing that two practices a week and a game on the weekend leads to the entitled feeling of reaping all the rewards of the sport like scholarships, titles and prestige. How about playing because you enjoy it!!!
One great example of just loving to play the game was former Dynamo Stuart Holden. Get your tips card at Soccer 4 All, Soccer Depot in Katy or Soccer Time in Pasadena.
What is on your soccer mind? For me it is this weekends Champions League final between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, plus interest around the Dynamo (see above) and what manager Dominic Kinnear will do with his lineup vs. United.

Really looking forward to Sat at Robertson stadium, Glenn. Besides needing my Dynamo fix, there are all the factors you mentioned that I have been wondering about. Who will start? Who is healthy? Will they mesh together on the field in yet another new game roster? Time will tell…
I also have been wondering about the 4-5-1 packed midfield. I am not happy about it as a regular feature. Sure makes the game boring and clogged. Reminds me of little kid soccer where they are all hovering over the ball. I understand it as a short term tactical decision such as down a man red card and defend the goal you just scored in a tough game but much more than that and I say “stay home because there is not much to see”.
A few more questions… why was Beckerman was not included in the line up for the US team. Also, how is Geoff Cameron healing? Why so few US men team friendlies along with what appears to be a late start up for the USMNT (esp compared to Mexico and others)?? Thanks!
Thank, Glenn!
“FIFA has given the go-ahead to public-viewing parties in Germany during the World Cup. Such public-viewing events were a huge success at the World Cup in Germany four years ago.”
Do you think Houston can get in on something like this?
Altidore’s “statement”:
Ii heard about this on ESPN’s P.T.I… and I kinda of agree with the guys on the show.. its nice to have the “American Confidence”.. but when Kobe says stuff like that…. HE IS KOBE (skill full & proven).. not Derrick Rose (skilled, but still young, up & coming)… maybe he will step it up that day… I just hope he is NOT Absent that day.. i believe he is probably fueling his own fire for that game! at least I hope so! lol…
Dynamo:
I think Tally will do well.. Im sure he is ready. Mullrooney back to CDM.. lets see the difference between him & Palmer. i hope Robinson can play, but if he is not fully ready, rest him…I would like to see Cruz start to see what he does instead of Ashe…I think Weaver should finally get SOME time this day. overall I think we are Due for a Win (according to our current pattern.. WLWL – lol…)
Allstar:
Cant wait!!! Im glad Ive got my ticket! Im trying to vote for as many Dynamo as possible! lol.. Trying to!!.. bcuz, some of the guys, I just CANT do it for them…..Landin.. lol
Well since Rooney and Rio are not coming with Manure, they better suit up Cantona, Law, Charlton and even dig up George Best and suit him up. I bet he can convert more chances than Berbatov can, and he is FREAKING DEAD!
Every team plays two formations, one when they attack and one when they defend. Those teams that get that concept ar successful, while other still struggle with it. My teams attack in the 4-3-3 and defend in the 4-5-1. It is along the lines of the Guus Hiddink method. This year, Chelsea looked like a 4-4-2 in defense and a 2-4-4 in attack, and that worked for them, obviously.
A slight concern for me Glenn. We are playing our WC matches in the altitude, yet we are training in New Jersey. Will we be prepared for the altitude and what affect will it have? I doubt we can train on the coast and then helicopter in to the match a la Argentina did in Bolivia (how did that end up?) I think this will be a concern.
I hear they may be putting up a big screen on Discovery Green for the U.S. England game.
Differ a bit on the two formations, not going to give that credit to teams that truly play for one mistake and one chance. It is reality, but I prefer to say you have a philosophy that is either attacking or defending with the knowledge that for portions of games all teams have to absorb some pressure. Some truly attack and defend, others only defend.
a big screen at Discovery Green Park would be Amazing!.. Ive never been to it.. so I would be there!… i looked on their events.. and they don’t have anything listed about the WC..
