About the behind the scenes on the stadium. A comment and one question:
1. This was practically a done deal as soon as Annise Parker assumed office and reached out to the County Commissioners. It is my feeling that the deal would have been accomplished much sooner had Mayor White done the same thing, but I believe that because he had aspirations of higher office (Governor) – he did not want to be saddled with a stadium. Hence the stadium matter stalled for a couple of years – depriving the Dynamo of those anticipated revenue streams. It is to the owners of the Dynamo’s credit that they did not give up – and move the team, as they did when they were in San Jose.
2. Beginning around the latter part of 2009, a number of Dynamo supporters began making appearances before City Council and Commissioners Court to advocate that both get together and get the stadium deal done. How much – if any influence did those citizen advocates have on the decision making process, or was it merely a matter of Mayor Parker taking that step toward.
I expect that Judge Emmett will credit the folks who appeared – but in reality, that’s his job, he’s a politician and he’s supposed to say nice thing like that.
I judge the fans had huge influence Nigel.
If not for fans interest in soccer/futbol here in Houston this franchise never would have been re-located here in the first place.
The fans that went to council and rallied at stadium site were vital.
As for Emmett he was important in the political process working with County commissioners I would assume as that is in his job description.
A difficult process as you know even with major resources and finances coming from AEG.
I am sure there are many political happenings behind the scenes that we have no idea about.
Glad it got done!
