U.S. Roster Announced for Netherlands match. Let’s examine:

GOALKEEPERS: Tim Howard (Everton), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa) Marcus Hahnemann (Wolves)
* These look to be the three goalkeepers going to the World Cup barring injury. Sidenote is Brad Friedel who has retired from the U.S. but is still in great form in the EPL for Villa.

DEFENDERS:
Jonathan Bornstein(Chivas USA) – History with Bradley at Chivas USA, center-back last night proving out versatility.
Carlos Bocanegra(Rennes)- experience and history with Bradley and internationally, central defender priority with the ability to play left back like in Confederations Cup.
Jay DeMerit-(Watford) value raised after confederations cup, traditional center back whose stock might be higher due to injury to Onyewu
Clarence Goodson- (IK Start) clearly getting opportunity under Bradley to make this squad as evidenced by this selection .
Heath Pearce- (FC Dallas) stock rose last night vs. El Salvador, will go to the World Cup in my opinion.
Frank Simek- (Sheffield Wednesday) A long shot but European based
Jonathan Spector- (West Ham United) Right or left back that has experience and youth.

MIDFIELDERS
DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers) DMB used to be mentioned in the same breath as Landon Donovan as they both broke in together. Race to make squad.
Alejandro Bedoya (Orebro) Needs spectacular moment or match to make the final squad.
Michael Bradley (Borussia Moechengladbach) Son of the coach or not he is an important part of the U.S. midfield
Landon Donovan- (Everton) best player in U.S. history, best player U.S. born in Europe right now and the key to success
Maurice Edu-(Rangers) most keep playing and performing to earn spot
Stuart Holden (Bolton) Ditto for Holden but many have placed him on final squad already due to ability to play wide in a non traditional manner.
Calming influence on ball a rarity for U.S. player
Jose Torres (Pachuca) another of the new breed that is comfortable on the ball. Will he get minutes vs. Netherlands?

FORWARDS: Jozy Altidore (Hull City) is top striker currently on national team because of athletic ability.
Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake) trying to help fill the need for pace and mobility that the U.S. could possibly miss without Charlie Davies.
Lack of international experience could hurt him but could be decent option off the bench.
Eddie Johnson (Aris) Over-hyped when he came in due to his exceptional athletic ability, he remains a long shot.

DYNAMO NOTE:
The Dynamo will play in the Superliga this summer against Mexican competition.

  1. When I try to think about the CBA, a big dark cloud forms over my head. I would hope that a solution is found other than striking, and I sincerely do think the players can get what they want without resorting to that measure. Just awful, and I think the lion’s share of the blame lies with the league, for putting their love of power over the longterm interests of the league and the game in the United States.

So to happier thoughts, I do like the new USMNT kits, despite the naysaying from all around me. Last night was like a clinic in awful finishing. As for Robbie Rogers, when Columbus comes here to Houston, I’m going to put a big sign up just above and to the left of goal that reads “Hit this!” He showed last night that he would have no problem from multiple angles.

Ching was clearly MOTM, and if Geoff Cameron’s late strike had been just 18 inches lower the scoreline would have been Houston Dynamo 2, El Salvador 1.

Just saw the USMNT roster for the Netherlands friendly. If there’s a pattern in Bradley’s call up strategy, it’s that there is no pattern at all. What exactly has Findley done to merit any further call-ups? I mean, he has loads of speed, but you saw again last night that the guy is a poor finisher. Why wouldn’t Ching get the call-up after what he did last night? Wild.

As for the Terry/Bridge deal, coupled with Ashley Cole’s injury, then clearly the secret “Belo Horizonte Segundo” mission is proceeding apace. Drip…drip…drip…

Bad news for non-MLSers Cooper, Castillo, Adu

  3. glenndavis says:

Ching is a given and Bradley doesn’t need to assess him Martek. He knows what he brings. Findley is getting more opportunity based on his movement and mobility but as you mentioned is technically and positionally at question mark at the international level.
I like him in MLS and pull for him but it doesn’t look in the cards.
Of course a goal against Holland could make one wonder.
Some are being given opportunity to play themselves off the roster.

  4. I think you’re right there Glenn. I am amazed at the lack of amazement over Eddie Johnson’s return to the squad. You know, I like the guy, when he’s on, but how often is that for Big Head EJ?

  5. oscar villarreal says:

Ching had a good game, he looke very energetic and fast. Brad Davis played well in ball distribution.

  6. Kostas says:

This is a massive game for a lot of these players. Most players can only get one shot to make it to a World Cup. And also a player like Demarcus Beaseley outside looking in, could be his last chance.
An impressive goal or assist, or a defender having a lockdown game, could do a lot for them, especially against quality opposition like the Netherlands.

  7. glenndavis says:

Agreed Kostas, a good performance against the quality of the Netherlands can magnify players in the eyes of a manager and the media .

  8. William says:

Note to Bob Bradley- Get over Eddie Johnson already will ya??

  9. wren says:

Eddie Johnson is pants. His touch is that of an amateur and he is and will always be a great squanderer of chances because the only thing worse than his touch is his finishing. Years of failure abroad is proof positive that his USMNT-CONCACAF highlight reel and back-to-back MLS hat tricks were nothing but flukes. Martek’s “Hit This” sign could easily be recycled from Eddie’s glory days at Dallas and KC. In fact, they’re still waiting for his first strike in a Fulham kit (v West Ham) to come down.

If Bob Bradley wastes a uniform on Eddie Johnson, he’s not fit to coach an FFPS team.

I’m often amused at Altidore-Johnson comparisons because Jozy Altidore is 10 times the talent, 10 times the player, 10 times the desire, and 10 times the man EJ ever dreamed of.

  10. Edwin says:

As someone who was praying for Brad Davis to start so that Findley could get some service, sorry Oscar, Brad failed in the final 3rd and did not take advantage of the last time he would have a chance at the nats! With guys like Bedoya, Beasley and then future talents like Pontius and Wallace in DC coming into play for the 2014 cycle and guys like Torres and Rogers who also offer left mid abilities, I think we’ve seen the last of him.

I think Castillo and Adu are bad omissions! Only 18 field players, only 3 forwards and 7 mids, I don’t see how Adu doesn’t get inhere, and if Bob is worried about our LB spot and only calls in Pearce and Bornstein, this tells me he’s done with Castillo prospect and I think I’ll stop asking for him. It will be Boca or Bornstein vs teams in SA. Which worries me against guys like Lennon in England, don’t think Boca can keep up with his speed and Bornstein doesn’t have the international ability to do well at that level. Maybe he can prove me wrong next wednesday?

Adu should of gotten a look, I understand why EJ is there, but how is Adu not included? If anything it gives Bob a better chance of one of them having a good camp and game! I expect a 5 man midfield with Torres and Bradley or Edu & Bradley, I think Donovan will start out in the left wing and maybe Torres as the CAM in front of Edu&Bradley. If not maybe Beasley goes wide left and Donovan goes in centrally, too bad Feilhaber is injured for this one?

This all assuming Holden gets another chance at starting in the wide right wing, he did’t do much in DC vs Costa Rica so he better show up against the Dutch!

Adu could of been an amazing sub to play 2 strikers with Jozy, they did combine amazingly in Canada for the 07 U-20 WC?

I am happy to see Ching do well!

Glenn I’ll elaborate on my Ching analysis later with a seperate comment, and yes I am an anti-Ching guy, Ching hater for the US but Davis is hurt and Findley underdeveloped at the international level.
