So another Superliga game has come and gone and what we again witness is a disturbing trend. More post game fights and groups of players sourrounding referees. Generally it has been the losing team creating this poor display…..Nothing was different last night and I am sure fans all around the country knew the predictable by watching the game that ATLANTE would embarrass themselves with poor behavior after this one…..Staff members throwing punches……please. Will this staff member be released or fired by the organization?
Hear is what Matt Reis NE goalkeeper had to say:
“You see it all the time. I’m sure if you went back and looked at the tape of every game that one of the teams from Mexico lost in Superliga they’re all screaming and yelling at the referee. They have people from their staff coming on taking shots at people.
The referee doesn’t call the game and we get guys bladed. So in the end we are not happy with the way things went down but we played a good game. All they wanted to do was come here and fight us.”
So how to respond?….Sportmanship and losing with dignity is a part of confident soccer clubs. For the clubs involved I wonder if there is any internal policy to discipline the players. Would they be disciplined if this were a Mexican league game? Just as U.S. teams must represent properly in foreign countries I suppose it is the same for those that play in the states. The Superliga2008 website failed to show any of this on their website and it seems to me they are pushing this dirt under the carpet. It is a problem and it will turn fans off…or will it?…….This tournament has alot of serious issues to look at in the future if it truly wants to improve and survive. If you remember Atlante behavior wasn’t particularly good in their 4-0 loss to the Dynamo……….Emotional control is a must…….I found it terribly embarrassing……

Why was none of the offenders after the game arrested for assault. During the game it is part of the game, after it is just as if you fight in the street and appropriate action should have taken place. Take the offenders to jail!!! I also believe that the Revolution are to blame as well where were the police officers. After the Dynamo game when the exchange took place you saw the cops immediatly come out and get things under control.
What would have happened had the N.E. players done that in Mexico, they would have never made it off the field Atlante players would have fought back and when leaving the stadium players would have had batteries, bottles, anything in arms reach thrown at them. Then what would you expect from a Mexican crowd. I will never look at Mexico the same after the WC qualifier in Azteca in 05′ when the chants of “OSAMA” rang from the crowd (was ready to jump through my t.v.).
Should be a very exciting final. With N.E. having to play without Parkhurst, and Heaps Dynamo should be able to take advantage, and I want to see how our D handles their very speedy attack this time around.
FOREVER ORANGE
I am coming to the conclussion that winning with class and losing with grace, or as I was taught, “Not being a spoiled sport” is something that is not taught in the Hispanic culture. When I go out to the games on the weekends at the parks where we adults play, I see exactly the same things. When we get ahead, watch out, the fouls are many and dangerous. After the games they want to fight or at the very least scream and curse at us and the officials. I think theses players, professional or weekenders, are just a bunch of whining babies. Frankly, I don’t see it changing with the next generation. The next generation are sitting there watching their fathers, brothers and uncles act the way they do and are being taught that injuring someone or getting into a fight after a game is just part of being a man or player. Sorry for the opinion but my ankles and eyes don’t lie to me. Having said that it has been a great Super Liga tournament to watch and I hope it continues. Anyway go Dynamo!
Thanks for your views. I also wondered if the Mexican players have ANY repercussions from their team leaders/league over the bad behavior. Can we find out? I am aware that MLS players certainly do. I have also wondered at the lack of information coming out online and in print about it all. Damage control?? How are the refs picked? Do they have any oversight to keep them in check? There appear to be many problems to be worked out before Superliga can happen again, if ever. I was unhappy and saddened by the poor behavior. It really detracted from the game and the sport. I look forward to Tuesday and watching my hometown team, Dynamos, take on NE again. It should be great!! Bring home a win, guys!
PS – why is Robertson stadium’s field so bad?? I know ity has recently been sodded but it looked rolly, lumpy and dangerous.
Diving, sucker-punches, yelling, complaining, making excuses…catch the Mexican League it’s FAN-TASTIC!!!
I am really disappointed Atlante is not coming to Robertson. I was really looking forward to the Dynamo stomping another Mexican League team to win it. They are really easy to hate. It really gets the crowd into a fervor too. One good thing, it will give the paramedics on hand a little breather. I am sure they were getting tired running onto the field every 5 minutes in this heat.
I hope Oliver orders plenty of “Cameron” gear for next year. I was really impressed with his defense against Pachuca. He is a little deceptive in that his height makes him look a little slow and awkward at times, but he gets to lots of balls and hustles non-stop. Plus he adapts well. Dom has him all over the field and he produces.
This is why Mexico will never be a world power in soccer. They’re petulent little children that don’t understand how to play the game.
For better or worse, games like Tuesday night are how the game is played in many parts of the world including Latin America. If the Dynamo want to continue to improve in international competition, they have to play games like these. The team responded well, and they have advanced to the final.
Barring serious injury, these games are great for the players. The improvement in the team from the CONCACAF tournament last year to this year’s SuperLiga is amazing. It’s basically the same players on the field. The experience is making them better.
It was embarassing but predictable to see the reactions from the Pachuca/Atlante fans and players after going down a goal. Losing with dignity shows maturity and class. If MLS teams had acted that way in Mexico, major problems even getting out of the stadium.
It got to the point where MLS players had to stop looking at the ball to make sure they weren’t about to receive a cheap shot.
I was in the stands for Dynamo and Pachuca and had friendly trash talk between with Pachuca fans around me. Everything changed when we scored.
In general, fake injury (especially in the box),
blame referee for an excuse, take cheap shots when losing, and (mature?) coaches/executives fight, too.
I would be embarrassed if we acted that way. This not the first time. It makes me mad that they think this is acceptable behavior.
Argentina has been world champion a few times , have you ever seen how they hit when they loose, or how the argentinan fans run into stadiums to beat up the teams when they loose at club level. I am calling out argentina just to show that that even the super powers do this, and no acting like that doesnt mean you wont win a world cup, ask the european teams, and south american national teams. This is how this sports culture is, and no the hispanic culture does not teach”it doesn’t matter if you win or loose, is how you play….” and i dont beleive many others in the world teach that when it comes to football, have you ever seen the tackles the caribean teams break your midfield with, or the spitting on the opposing team players out of frustration around the world? I do not condone what i saw in the semis but its reality not only in Mexico but across the football culture. Clubs dont take lossing lightly, the players are not condition players this way. ironic phrase, In the U.K, an old saying goes “football is a gentleman’s game played by ruffians and rugby is a ruffian’s game played by gentlemen”.
