Philadelphia has been awarded a franchise to begin play in MLS in the 2010 season as we all expected after a news conference today with MLS Comissioner Don Garber.
“Philadelphia brings in one of the most passionate sports markets in the country and provides a natural rivalry for New York Red Bulls and DC Utd,” said Garber.
Eighty million dollars in public funding will be used to build the stadium.
As we all know, stadiums these days are built for more than one sport in mind and entertainment.
Every team that builds a new stadium says it will be the best in the league and that is fine provided they truly make an attempt to follow up that statement. Lamar Hunt and the Columbus Crew kicked the soccer specific stadium wave off and Crew Stadium might seem a little archaic in comparison to Toyota Park, Home Depot Center and Pizza Hut Park but it still has great sight lines and intimacy. Red Bull Park when it is completed will be done strictly for soccer in mind. They all look good when they are packed with fans!!!

I think its great that the MLS is expanding. I mean I don’t mind another team in the league for the Dynamo to run through, the more the marrier! This shows the progress that the MLS is making and it shows that soccer is growing in the US. Sooner or later it’ll be as big as football…well, maybe not so much.
