Aloha from the Hawaiian Islands Invitational where Busan (South Korea), Yokahama (Japan), Melbourne Heart (Australia) and the Colorado Rapids are getting set to begin tournament play tonight at Aloha Stadium. More on that .
Dynamo center back Geoff Cameron is one of only four players from MLS that has been called in to the U.S. National team squad that will take on Italy on the 29th.
Now I have debated the merits of Cameron at the national level and that his uniqueness can come in a variety of ways. Size, strength, great lateral cover, comfort on the ball and a dimension of attack out of the back that ultimately will have to be groomed. His one on one defending skills will be tested more than ever at the international level against international strikers.
One only needs to look to last year to see the direct benefit of Cameron when he lifted the game of Bobby Boswell later in the year. The ability to influence others counts. Oh, and by the way so does delivering if he gets minutes against Italy on Wednesday the 29th.
Cameron could finally in his head call himself a central defender as that is where Dominic Kinnear has now placed him with the acquisition of Luiz Camargo last year.
His performance against Italy is important and one wonders if he has the room to be groomed going forward under Jurgen Klinsmann at the international level.
The Colorado Rapids will be a new look squad this coming season. With new coach Oscar Pareja at the helm Colorado is implementing a 4-3-3 set-up and has added some player and staff from Colombia.
Wilmer Cabrera from the U.S. under 17 squad is an assistant to Pareja and will help the transition. In the past the Rapids were quite the direct squad under Gary Smith winning an MLS title buy getting the ball forward often and early to Omar Cummings and Conor Casey.
How will the style of a new coach be accepted and blend in. The fact is , Rapids players new and old have to re-establish themselves to a new coach will could be a blessing for the organization.
The Rapids will bring Colombian attacker Jaime Castrillon, and it looks like will also add Martin Rivero from Argentina and left back Luis Zapata also from Colombia who looks as though he may get the start tonight.
I also had the opportunity to catch up with Brian Mullan who continues to be the starter on the right side for the Rapids. Mullan always the gentleman is looking forward to the upcoming season and looked fit during training.

Glenn- Afraid only “blessing” for Rapids would be if Kroenke sold team to a
person or group that’s really interested in showing the support and commitment needed to make the team a viable part of the Denver sports scene.
