The whole incident at the Roosevelt night club on Washington Avenue sheds light on a number of different issues. First and foremost you wish it did not happen.
I have watched Tyler Deric mature under the tutelage of the Houston Dynamo and their environment. It is obvious the environment and individuals within it have helped to shape his growth. He also was kind enough to donate his time to the KICK CANCER event this past December.
Did he handle the situation properly? Could he have walked away? Who knows but there is also something noble about sticking up for a teammate that comes with the territory as a professional athlete. Call it code, call it right or wrong? Avoiding this would have been the best but to err is human.
The Dynamo clearly believe he is a solid back-up to Tally Hall and I have heard Dominic Kinnear say he has no reservations about putting him in goal. Still, in the future for Deric he will need more games and could get them this year possibly in Concacaf Champions League play or during the regular season.
Back to the nightclub, it does not have the greatest reputation and others have claimed profiling and racism which they have denied.
Incidents occur at nightclubs weekly if not daily.
For the Dynamo dealing with an incident like this that has gone public is a first time deal. For those that tell me this is good soccer pr I am not sure I agree with that. Was the David Beckham H&M commercial good advertising for MLS? For those who have said it is to me, I disagree. If H&M had put Beckham in his LA Galaxy uniform I might have said yes. Too bad Beckham and his agent did not demand that soccer be involved in that commercial.
Maybe a Beckham free kick highlight at the start of end.
I was also reminded of the fact that MLS relative to other pro-sports has had minimal off field incidents. Back in 1998 Mari Gori and Raul Diaz Arce of DC United were accused of sexual assault and kidnapping. The charges were later dropped by the accuser in a Franklin County, Ohio Court.
Now for more on Brian Ching, with the Dynamo not able to secure Scottish striker Kris Boyd or Kevin Davies of Bolton, could this be advantageous to the return of Brian Ching? One might think so……

About Ching, I’ll believe it when I see it. We could read tea leaves and little clues into all of these things but this has the potential to turn into the “he’s not really gone” when in fact, he’s not here and so, he’s gone. It’s one thing for fans to talk about it, but with the team itself talking about it as much as it has, one has to wonder if this becomes a distraction when the season begins.
About the incident, I haven’t been there but have colleagues of various backgrounds who have been to the bar in question. My colleagues don’t have the nicest things to say about the people who run the place. But in any event, Tyler and the guys should have walked away (easy to say in hindsight) and head some place else. It’s the hardest part to walk away and not fight back for your friends. Most people (not footballers, people in general) would have fought back and taken part in an incident like this. But, the professional has to realize who they are, and, at risk of their immediate ego reputation, walk away.
I know, this is easier for me to say as a father in his mid-30s and yes, we all, me included, did some really dumb/regrettable things in our early days of adulthood. But, one has to move on from these things in real time. Easy to say, hard to do. Hopefully everyone doesn’t make the same mistake should they be in a similar situation next time.
Jon, the problem with walking away from this like this is that they never change. I hope they are truly exposed for the racist bigots they act like. What’s worst is from what I have heard, it seems like something they do to appease to a certain crowd….
