MEXICO rolls in tonight to Reliant Stadium to take on Angola in a World Cup preparation match that should have the stadium filled to the rafters.
After all, this is a machine of a draw that hits right at the heart and veins of a Mexican national. There is no doubt this will be a World Cup type atmosphere for those who are not getting anywhere near South Africa.
Now many I have talked to about the Mexican national team are very concerned that they will even get out of Group A in South Africa.
Manager Javier Aguirre you will remember helped to turn around the Mexican national team after the poor choice from the Mexican FA in hiring Sven Goran Erickkson.
His squad is a blend of youth and experience and all the rage right now is Javier Hernandez, a striker who recently signed with Manchester United.

They will open the World Cup up against the host nation South Africa which is a tricky match. Now I have no doubt Mexico has the more talented squad but to open the tournament against the host nation who just might morph into a more formidable foe has to be considered. Without a good result in this game, Mexico will then look at France and Uruguay which both will be huge obstacles.
France is chock full of European players and combines both strength and skill while Uruguay is as physical as they come and has two dangerous strikers in Luis Suarez of Ajax and Diego Forlan of Europa League champions Atletico Madrid..
Alot will come down to the opening match against South Africa in my opinion and I would be remiss to not mention the fact that Mexico has a number of European players as well led by Rafa Marquez of Barcelona, Andres Guardado of Deportivo La Coruna, and Gio Dos Santos (nephew of former Houston Dynamo’s Beto dos Santos).
How does Aguirre use Cuauhtemoc Blanco in this tournament? Does he start? Does he come off the bench? His minutes will need to be calculated with the quick turn around in games.
El Tri is here tonight, are you excited to see this match? Or will you be tuning in to the Dynamo at Real Salt Lake?

DYNAMO AT RSL
Meanwhile, in Sandy, Utah the Dynamo take on RSL at Rio Tinto Stadium looking for a 2nd consecutive road win.
Real Salt Lake come off a 3-0 win of their own and are formidable at home. RSL is 5th while the Dynamo 2nd in the West and they met earlier in the year at Robertson with the Dynamo winning 2-1 on two penalty kick goals from Brad Davis.
Javier Morales is always a threat for RSL out of midfield .
So what is more important to you tonight? The Dynamo game? Or the Mexico match?

Im gonna have to set that DVR for the Dynamo game this time…feel bad about it, but hey…Reliant Stadium, 70K plus fans, going with some buddies, and to make it even better, I have a scheduled day off tomorrow…

    I had to…sorry I had to…

It’s amazing how el Tri is such a marketing and money-making machine as you said…especially since if you really think about it…they haven’t won anything…

but the federation and the people behind el Tri (Televisa & TV Azteca) have done a very good job of instilling hope into the ever oppressed mexican culture…

I can talk of that because I grew up in Mexico and remember how even at 10 yrs old it was very painful to see Mexico not go to Italy…then in 94, lose to Bulgaria while almost the whole neighborhood cried and cried after the loss…

As I’ve grown up i’ve realized that Mexico’s National team had been sold to us as this great world soccer power, when it really wasn’t…

but people still follow…and I do too..

I tried getting that new black jersey and these are the results I got…

    Univision.com – Backordered until August
soccer.com – Backordered until end of June
soccer 4 all – well they just laughed at me when I walked into the store and asked if they had it in stock…

Just can’t wait for the World Cup!!

    :)

Well I have to work tonight but I DVRd both games and I’ll be watching the Dynamo first when I get home and the Mexico game tomorrow sometime in the morning.

  3. margo says:

No, for me local loyalty comes first. So I will be watching the Dynamo and record Mexico’s game, which begs the next question. What channel will televise their game? Mexico should handle Angola nicely, if they are on their game. The crowd alone should push them to victory. Just glad I don’t live anywhere near Reliant Stadium.

I think the Dynamo will have their hands full with RSL. I suppose we will be shorthanded again with forwards. Maybe coach will use the same lineup as he did with Chivas. That seemed to go well. I am all for Serioux scoring again. Its nice to see him in a Dynamo uniform again.

  4. Philip says:

I will be watching the Dynamo, their game matters in the standings. The Mexico match is an exhibition, but I will try to see some of the game if it is televised just to see how they play coming into the World Cup, but Dynamo game first and always, Forever Orange and Go Team USA!

Glenn- Tonight’s game Dynamo vs. RSL, perfect example of poor marketing done at most MLS Clubs.
RSL ’s promotion for tonight is ” Health Awareness Night”. Boy that will pack them in!
I’m sure all week kids in Salt Lake City area were pleading with their parents to take them to “Health Awareness Night”
Meanwhile another typical week in MLB. Where the promo’s and giveaway’s ranged from Bobbleheads to beachtowels,Backpacks to t shirts.
If an established game and league such as MLB see’s the need to promote itself, how much more should MLS??
That’s why you’ll see Rio Tinto Stadium with sections and area’s of empty seats tonight.
This is an entertainment business, bottomline. When you compete for limited spending $$ and up against other options for families and the casual sports fan ( Other sporting events, amusement parks, movies, etc.)
Your going to have to do better than this!

let me say that vela will be missed in this game – jet lag…

  7. Mac Buckets says:

Is the money aspect the reason that El Tri has SIX friendlies scheduled in the month before a grueling World Cup? Is this just a way to fatten the Mexican FA’s pockets? I think it’s ridiculous that they play 6 when almost every other major team plays only 2. Fresh legs are a good thing.

  8. Bandido says:

I’ll be at Reliant and record the Dynamo game. it’s not every day one has a chance to watch El Tri live. But I’ll have some Dynamo gear on at the Stadium !!

Now, if anyone wants to sponsor me for a trip to South Africa I’ll stay home and watch the Dynamo tonight !!

  9. BayVol says:

Dynamo game is so much more important than a friendly.

  10. c.l. says:

William, I don’t know if you’ve ever been to SL City, but after having been there on business on multiple occasions, RSL doesn’t have much competition on Thursday nights when vying for the local’s entertainment dollar. You could commiserate with pals over the Jazz who lost 4 …of their last 4 games [trounced out of the playoffs], or you could go downtown to the Temple and listen to the choir practice for this weekend’s services [and that treat is free], or take in a SL Bees minor league baseball game if they’re in town…

MLB is giving away backpacks, towels, etc. because the clubs et al, have the corporate sponsors to pony up big time – when was the last time you saw Astros swag with just the name of the Astros on it – even the Dynamo have to plaster Amigo Energy or Methodist Hospital on ever scarf they give away. And whether it’s Health Awareness Night or ‘Win a free date with a Dynamo Gal’ night, I’m still going to the game – some orange freebie doesn’t influence my decision. Haven’t you heard ? MLS is teetering on bankruptcy – wasn’t that why they were so reluctant to increase salaries ?

In closing, Dynamo on the TV tonight instead of Reliant. Last time I saw El Tri [v. Panama] at Reliant, Aguirre was kicking players on the opposing team, and pandemonium was breaking out in the stands, with beers thrown, folks arrested, etc. I just assume not place myself in harm’s way at my advanced age.

I’m having to watch the Dynamo in my kiddo’s room as the TIVO works overtime on Thursday nights.

Mexico may have a special WC. These “friendlies” (Senegal, Angola) give them a good look at what South Africa can do, they should not loose the opener. Mexico has done well vs. Uruguay over the last several years such as in the Copa America. I am looking forward more to the France v. Mexico match than the US v. England match. If Mex can get points from this match, France has not been playing flawlessly, Mex could be the group winner.

  13. Mattoomba says:

Very disappointing performance by the Dynamo last night. RSL’s speed was too much for us, but Onstad ensured it didn’t pay off for them. Unfortunately, our unfocused defending did pay off for RSL. Serioux did well when he was on the ball, but seemed lost when defending, particularly on the first and last goals (although Chabala exacerbated the problem on the first goal by keeping Finley onside). Serioux was in the mix on the 2nd goal too, but I believe that one was more Boswell’s fault as he left the man open in the middle when Serioux was closing down the threat on the left.

In the midfield, I was surprised at how poor the passing was. They passed into space when it should have been to the feet, passed to the feet when it should have been into space, and passed behind teamates innumerable times. (If I had a dollar for each time, I could fund the new stadium!) Unforced errors were atrocious too. Very disappointing peformance.

The Orange looked very creative from about the 65th minute on, partially due to subs, partially due to their indomitable pride and determination, and partially due to RSL being comfortable no doubt. Great goal by Mullan. Great one-touch thru-pass by Ching to set Davis up with an opportunity. More creative passing set Oduro up at least once (and he was his typical poor-finishing self on those). I love Oduro’s speed, but his finishing makes the speed almost a non-issue. He did manage some good passing in the final third a few times though.

I was surprised Palmer was the first sub out. I’d think he would offer more than Mulrooney…or maybe take the overtaxed Waibel out and move Mulrooney to Left Back.

Regarding RSL, I thought they looked very good on the attack. Borchers is still a thug (every team has one) and Morales plays with little honor too. I was surprised to see Finley adopt the diving tactics. He seemed better than that, but I guess you can’t escape that when you play for RSL, and maybe they do it more versus the Dynamo because the Dynamo are physical. I was not surprised by Finley’s MLS-caliber poor finishing. With any talent at all, he could’ve had 2 more goals. Luckily he finishes like Oduro…that lucky for the Dynamo at least, not for the USMNT.

On the bright side, the win-loss cycle states that we WILL win our next match.

  14. Mattoomba says:

I should’ve said, “or take Waibel out and move Mulrooney to RIGHT back.”
