Watching Giles Barnes bashing in volleys during a Dynamo finishing session at the end of training today makes us believe he will be hard to keep off the field tomorrow in either a starting or subs role.
Cam Weaver may have been set for that role but a niggling injury might potentially pre-clude him from getting the start.
So back to the Englishman.
I get the sense that Barnes is on a mission to re-claim his career and now with a full pre-season behind him he just might be a good bet to make it happen.
The Dynamo and Dom Kinnear must take credit for re-signing Barnes on his potential which we saw in spurts last year.
There was the long range power in the Concacaf Champions League, the set up play against DC United in the playoffs and the occasional powerful run that opened up defenses and made your jaw drop.
In training the other day I saw him make a run out of deep in midfield that just wreaked of power and speed as he broke between a center back and outside back in training.
It is the type of run that only he and Boniek Garcia can make out of midfield to really pull defenses apart.
Impressive to say the least.
Certainly he can play in central midfield, behind a striker and as a withdrawn forward but it is clear that he is an option as a striker.
He can come back to the ball, has a strong frame or hold up play, good skill set, power from long range and can be a threat when it comes to creating a shot or chance for himself. His ability to drag center backs into the “hole” will have to be honored with his desire to finish.
And of course he is a threat behind defenses with his speed and timing of runs.
Barnes is one to keep an eye on tomorrow as the Dynamo open up at BBVA Compass Stadium against DC United.
Andrew Driver looked good for a guy who got off a plane last night at midnight in training today. Has the look of a footballer.
Tyler Deric/Cam Weaver were not at training while Omar Cummings was running and getting fitness work.
Dwayne DeRosario will not play for DC as he was suspended for an incident in a pre-season game with Brian Carroll and Danny Cruz. Tough to think a DC United team without DeRosario can come in to BBVA and beat the Orange.
