Based on the first leg RSL 1-0 win at Rio Tinto Stadium in Utah they end up winners 4-2 on aggregate.
Here is where stats don’t mean a thing and we get a vivid example of why the playoffs in MLS are a completely different season and you have to place a focus on how a team enters the playoffs. Columbus had been struggling to score goals and get results in their last five games while RSL got into the playoffs in emotional fashion for the second consecutive year and it is that emotion that can awaken a team.
Many focused on a poor road record of RSL but late last year they pulled out road results at critical times including to get in the playoffs against Colorado which they repeated this year in their final game a 3-0 win.
You couple this with the coaching move that Robert Warzycha of Columbus made not using either Schelotto or Alejandro Moreno in game one. I am not saying that was the deciding factor but it exemplified that all was night right in the land of the Crew. You could say that it was motivating for Schelotto as he scored twice yet in the end that was not good enough.
The turning point in this match was how quickly RSL responded to a 35th minute goal from Guillermo Barros Schelotto . Two minutes later RSL’s Kyle Beckermann played in Javier Morales who scored the aggregate tying goal and quickly grabbed back self belief. This was savable from Will Hesmer by the way. A poor Frankie Hejduk decision in stoppage time led to a penalty kick which was converted by Robbie Findley to give RSL that one goal aggregate lead heading into the second half.
Call it an upset if you want because of Columbus’s stature as defending champions but it is not if you look at trends of both of the clubs.
Your thoughts on this match…….?

Reminded me of what happened to the Dynamo last year against Red Bull. What an awful feeling for the home town crowd in Columbus. To be up 2 – 0 at home and not hold on is unacceptable for this team. It would be interesting to see what would have happened if Sigi still was still coaching the team.
It just shows you that the playoffs is a totally different season than the regular season in the MLS. I think it makes it somewhat intriguing but I am a traditionlist and would love to see the winner be the team that is on top of the table but we are in America (we have to do things differently than the rest of the world).
I think it was good for the Dynamo to be able see what happened to Columbus and what could happen to them if they don’t do what they need to do on Sunday.
The real matchup might be the Western Conference championship between the Galaxy and Dynamo. I know the Dynamo have to take care of Seattle first but it would be an intriguing matchup next round.
The Crew stadium was empty just like the RSL stadium was last week. What a disgrace. Defending Champs, Supporters Shield winners two years in a row, semifinal playoff game, and they could not fill their little bitty stadium. They deserve to get beat. What was the coach thinking when he did not start Guille or Moreno in Utah??????
He obviously does not know who Schelloto was or is. He did not start him because he was not having success in the last games of the season??? This is the playoffs, big players step up for these no matter what. Guille has played in more important matches than this coach has ever seen. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!!!!! Serves him right. Eat your idea now.
I hope our Dynamo were watching. Let’s not do that again. Send Seattle packing and bring on CHIVAS.
Let’s all chant, “Where’s our Stadium” at the 70th minute of the match on Sunday to put this issue in the national media.
Go DYNAMO!!!!
I second the WHERE’S OUR STADIUM!!!! Chant.
Okay so for everyone saying that the Goats are going to win on Sunday, I hope is just because you want to have 2 home games in the playoffs, or you’re just too scared to face my Galaxy squad, but I find it a bit dissappointing that even you are buying into it Glenn? Chivas has speed but remember we had really just 1 mistkae, Omar did the right thing on the 1st goal he forced Santos to try to go to his right and Santos sort of chipped a shot with his left past him but the fact is Ricketts lost the ball on the sun, so he really had 1 mistake, and Landon should of finished off the goats with the goal he missed by shooting right at Thornton or when Gordon missed Landon completely by himself, the goats will go down as the HDC will turn to the colors they belong under, the Galaxy colors!
I hope the Goats move to San Diego and get their own stadium!
And yes we want our stadium chant at the 70th minute idea might put the pressure on De La Hoya
THREE Goals at home by the number one seed against the barely qualifying number 8 seed? Columbus pulled a “dynamo” last night. What can you say about Jason Kreiss? Iy seems just a couple years ago he was playing for a team that was hopelessly plunged in the Wetsern Conference basement and then taking over a squad that battled expansion Chivas and San Jose for it. Now, he’s taken his club to another conference championship game! All the talk about their “inability” to win away from the Rio Tinto turf jusr made the past four wins even more impressive. Shame is their weak support for their lone home playoff game. When did Crew stadium become “little bitty” Carlos? I agree their attendance (even for a midweek game) was poor though. I think we beat that against RSL for a midweek regular season game by at least 5K. What makes you think Chivas and Thornton will advance? It seems that they have decided to stop playing defense (like their parent club) the past month. Scoring 2 goals a game only helps if the other team scores less Preki. Defense still win championships and Pat and the Orange know this better than anyone. (NYRB and a not so subtle RSL reminder notwithstanding). Any word on ticket sales Glenn?
I think all of the favorites in the first round will get knocked-off.
JA! I love it, this is futbol. the game doesn’t end until the ref blows the whistle, and this 180 min games are completely different to a regualr season game.
Oh and i agree with the no schelotto decision, what a waste. again i recall the old proverb: “young players win games, but old(experienced) players win championships”
I do not see RSL going past chicago or NE though.
Now on the dynamo, I’m up for the 70 min chant.
I am really nervous about the game. If we are going to be attacking more I’m afraid we will give zakuani or montero more room to operate and they are dangerous with space. I hope the team is as tight as it was in seattle.
The 70th minute chant will only be heard locally I think. The game is on channel 11.2 and on Telefutura only. The 3 other games are nationally on ESPN. Anyone why that is?
Edwin,
The scenario for the Dynamo would be for Chivas USA to beat LA so that the Dynamo would host and the club gets another home date because LA has the tie-breaker over the Dynamo. I was only stating the perfect scenario for the Dynamo.
I might tell you who I think will win but I think that is obvious with Donovan and Donovan.
Omar Gonzalez was exposed in a big way on the goal from Maicon Santos and with the back pass had a rough night for a rookie but had a great first year overall. He is excellent in the air but when a game gets opened up and he is isolated like that he becomes like alot of centerbacks…vulnerable. He was twisted and turned all over the place and should have tried to show the attacker wide.
No comparison between CLBvRSL in 09 and HOUvNYRB in 08:
Houston totally dominated NYRB and, despite the final scoreline, NYRB needed multiple lucky breaks to get that result. Included in the breaks was the entire left-sided partnership for the Dynamo going off with injuries in the first half. Still, the 2d Half was all Dynamo. As Dom said — the most one-sided 0-3 game ever.
Last night, and thru-out the series, RSL looked competitive with CLB. (I thought they matched up well with CLB and I picked them to advance in my brackets.)
The difference for me was a couple lapses in concentration by Frankie Hejduk. First in the first leg on the throw-in that RSL scored on. Second, letting Espindola get goal side of him on the set-piece, resulting in the penalty.
BTW. Anyone else watch that set piece and figure it was always designed for a dive in the box? Whole team clears for Espindola who swims inside then goes down like a sack of potatoes. (Not suggesting the pen was wrongly given, but I think Espindola was always going to go down looking for a pen on that play, whether Hejduk fouled him or not.)
That penalty was huge. If level at the break the second half has a whole different ball game.
Finally: LAGvCHV: I picked Chivas to advance. Chivas is playing better team footy than LAG. LAG can only defend well by over-committing to defense and robbing their offense, relying on counter-attacks. The more balanced team has the best chance to advance.
– Forever Orange.
Soo glad for RSL. They were cast as the underdog all the way. Maybe this will shut up or at least quieten thos bias sports commentators on Fox and ESPN. They are the same ones that gush all over Beckham and company even when they don’t do well. I personally don’t have anything against Seattle, but I do hope that our guys in orange hit them hard and fast. Come on Brian, its time for you to have another great game, like your very first in Houston. And Cameron, show all of “them” that you should have been given “that award”. And to all of our defenders, be ever so stingy against their offense. Keep them away from Onstad. I would not want to see him breathe on Montero. You know how fragile he is.
So does this cost warzycha the Coach of the Year award??? AND geoff Cameron gets robbed again! He shouldve been rookie of the year last year and he shouldve been defender of the year this year. Who won the ROY? Last year? Where’s that guy???
I just want the Conference Final to be here in H’ton. The only way that happens is if Chivas wins. LA is slower than molasses in February in the back. Chivas exposed that last game and I believe they can do it again.
Beckham is already in Italy mentally and Landon is not firing on all cylinders either. Arena and his group of Geriatric exEPL wanks need to go down. Go Chivas!!!
Houston needs to take care of business on Sunday so as to not disappoint the 30k plus that will be at the stadium. I have a friend that works for the Dynamo and they said that there are only 3,000 tickets left as of today. Let’s paint it Orange and let’s chant “Where’s our Stadium??” or ” Y el Estadio??”"” bang, bang, bangbangbang!!!!! 70th Minute.
