The Interliga comes at an inappropriate time like many tournaments as the smell of green is irrestible.
What a revelation I just had, professional sports is all about the money. Players and coaches of Mexican league teams have in past years repeatedly told me this tournament was ill-timed. Yet on the other hand I realized it was for the fans and that having top Mexican clubs come to the states could help to grow the game.
So Pumas beat Monterrey 1-0 with a number of reserve players, an embarrassment to Monterrey, sure. That is the risk you take being in this tournament. Remember last year Nexaca wowed everybody in the Interliga yet it did not lead to Mexican league titles in regular season play.
Lets dissect the Pumas goal. A great ball hit out of midfield by Pumas turned the entire Monterrey defense and had their back four turned chasing towards their own goal (the worst feeling for a defender). Good delivery found Pablo Bonells at the back post who re-directed it in with the outside of his foot.
Tonite Club America and Morelia will being Interliga play at Robertson. Lets not forget that the Dynamo last year beat CA and drew with Morelia. Significant results in the growing Dynamo resume. This is how history is formed.
Toluca takes on Atlas also, for any fans that go to the game I would love to here your reaction.
Ironically I am in Mexico and will watch the game on television.
By the way Jared Borgetti debuted for Monterrey last night and played around 62 minutes. I know he is Mexico’s all time leading goal scorer but for me these days he is riding his career out comfortably. He is not hungry.
