Ike could slow stadium deal?

With so many in survival mode what you would have to think the recent disaster of Hurricane Ike could slow progress in getting the stadium deal finally approved and moving forward. Local and state government has to be focused on all those locally so will AEG have to pony up the remaining $10 million dollars to complete the deal and move forward?
Ironically I am in San Jose where a stadium is moving forward which was ultimately deemed one of the reasons the Earthquakes were re-located to Houston a few years ago. This is a tricky situation and not for one second am I discounting those who are struggling through Hurricane Ike….Timing in getting stadiums done with all the political red tape can be an issue.
Speaking to me yesterday team president Oliver Luck had nothing new to report on the stadium at this moment which you would expect. I can’t see the stadium being on the minds of many in city government right now and frankly nor should it be for the moment.

This is one of those deals where the earlier deal that was likely available (privately financed, land only granted by city, minimal county help) was probably the better deal if the Dynamo had pushed harder in 2007 and ponied up a little more cash the deal would have been done at an overall lower cost to them when cost escalation and increased financing costs are factored in.

$10 million is not small change and I have no problem with AEG trying to negotiate the best possible deal but the best possible deal now may get worse everyday when you look at the potential financial hit that the county and city will take from Ike, even with federal reimbursement dollars. Politically, they are probably months away from getting this back on the table – its hard to justify focusing on a stadium with all that will be going on for the next few months from Ike, and then we have county and state elections in November, which brings us in to 2009 which is a city council election year . . .

I can’t help shake the feeling that the window of opportunity was opened widest 6-10 months ago and now AEG is trying to squeeze more thru the window now that it is narrowing. Let’s hope something gets done

Until you brought it up Glenn, I hadn’t even considered the consequeces as it pertains to our hopes for a stadium for our Dynamo. No electricity, no fresh food and cold showers for the last 2 weeks, can put your mind onto other things. I think this does put things in a different light now. No pun intended. But seriously, I am begining to wonder if AEG hasn’t miscaculated this time. I would not be surprised if IKE pushes the stadium back until 2010 posible. Lord help me, I’m feeling like San Jose. Great team, no stadium, a town that told the Oilers to go jump in the lake and plenty of suitors out there to swoop down and snatch our club. I hope Nashville doesn’t want a team!

The pathetic “snail paced negotiations” on the promised stadium by our city was bound to hit some economic pothole like Hurricane Ike. The Dynamo’s additional costs and expenses because of further delay will be ignored, as will their civic “Good Will” in cancelling a game against San Jose last Saturday at the city’s request even though it means rescheduling it into a very hectic and inconvenient time for the team. I would love to hear anyone justify the expectations the city has of this franchise compared to other teams. To lose the only source of professional sporting pride because of the indefensible double standard they’ve employed is simultaneously inconceivable and yet terrifyingly possible.

Maybe we have to consider putting the stadium in the suburbs. I know people hate this idea, but it could help keep the team in the city. I don’t know what I’d do if the team left.

  5. Offebacher says:

“Could slow Stadium deal”?? If it moves any slower we will see the as yet unnamed future expansion teams have a stadium built before we have an agreement in place. Of course Ike put a whole new twist into any ongoing negotiations but this is the time for AEG to put up or shut up as far as a downtown Stadium goes. As far as putting the Stadium in the ‘burbs, the price on that has probably gone up as well since all the eggs were put in the downtown basket early on.

  6. Peter says:

I understnad the politics and how these deals are so slow to progress…but it is truly frustrating to see other teams in the MLS with their own stadium while the true marquee franchise remains playing in an American football stadium.

San Jose will have a stadium before Houston….enough said.
