So here are a few thoughts and bits of information from the world of soccer:

* The Chicago Fire stole one last night 3-2 scoring two late goals against Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA to remain undefeated. A controversial penalty kick after Brian McBride was pushed down led to Cuautemoc Blanco scoring from the penalty spot in stoppage time. The “Blanco factor” was definetly evident on a Thursday night with over 20,000 fans in attendance. Patrick Nyarko had tied it up minutes earlier. The Dynamo will face the Fire in Chicago next Friday. The game can be seen on KHOU 11.2.

* Former DC United coach and MLS playing legend Peter Nowak will be named coach of the Philadelphia Union who will enter MLS play next season.
Nowak has been an assistant with the U.S. National team where he recently resigned.

*DYNAMO sign ODURO
The Dynamo have a great history of signing strikers and getting the best out of them. Speedster Dominic Oduro was acquired from New York and trained for the first time yesterday with his new team. After meeting with Oduro after his practice it is clear he is relishing being with his new team and repeatedly talked about the confidence that Dominic Kinnear has show in him by bringing him to Houston. Kinnear has consistently gotten the best out of strikers that have been brought to Houston. Paul Dalglish, Nate Jacqua, Joseph Ngwenya and Kei Kamara all have played their best soccer in MLS with the Dynamo. So will the process repeat with Oduro and Ade Akinbiyi? Time will tell.
The other book on Oduro is that he can’t finish plays despite his great speed. Yesterday in training he was finishing everything……..

* Another Texas EPL owner
Ellis Short of Dallas is the most recent American owner in the English Premier League and a wants a top half finish for his club next season. Sunderland who barely beat the relegation drop finished 16 out of 20 teams. Short said he will provide the financial ability that is missing at the club and the billionaire said he doesn’t want fans to have to go through a relegation battle again. The private equity and hedge fund manager bought Skibo Castle in Scotland and well known retreat where Madonna married Guy Ritchie.
Sunderland recently released striker Dwight Yorke.

*UNAM in poll position…..
Unam Pumas defeated Pachuca 1-0 last night on a Dante Lopez goal in the 21st minute.
The Paraguayan pounced on a rebound left by Miguel Calero of Pachuca. The second leg is at Pachuca on Sunday and I will predict a Tuzos comeback and win of the Mexican Football League title. How is that for a stretch…

* FA CUP FINAL
It’s prestigious and it is historic. Hey, isn’t everything historic these days! Chelsea will take on Everton at the famed Wembley Stadium (Lets just hope Air Supply or Oasis did not do a concert the night before). All you Chelsea fans I know are primed for your first piece of silverware since winning the FA Cup in 2007.
Everton and manager David Moyes are lead by outstanding goalkeeper Tim Howard who after the FA Cup will be flying to the U.S. to join his national team teammates ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier in Costa Rica.
Seven MLS players including Dynamo Brian Ching will join the national team after this weekend’s play.

* This is a story I hate but have followed
The brother of Tottenham midfielder Wilson Palacios was kidnapped in 2007 in Honduras and it is apparent that a body found is that of Palacios’s teenage brother who was 15 when abducted. Forensics including DNA and dental records helped identify bones as that of the younger Palacios named Edwin. He was abducted from his home and was not released despite a $500,000 payment.

*200 Million people watched the Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United which doubled the 100 million that watched the Super Bowl.
And this on a Wednesday night.

*Go to HoustonDynamo.com for more information on the benevolent activities of Craig Waibel and Brad Davis. Both are doing great charity work this weekend with Brad’s Brigade to support military families and “Bald is beautiful” supporting cancer awareness. Great work and we can all help!

*Tickets, tickets, tickets…..
Get your Dynamo tickets for the return of Dwayne DeRosario and Toronto FC . Great packages available at HoustonDynamo.com
The 2009 World Football Challenge featuring Chelsea and Club America will be playing in the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington in July.
You can save big by purchasing your tickets at FIESTA TICKETMASTER. Also save big on GOLD CUP tickets where if you act now you can save $5 per ticket.
That makes sense if you are taking a group or a family.

*NICK DOIZE was this week’s winner of the “Houston Unsung Soccer Hero Award” brought to you by FIESTA. Nick who is battling Leukemia created and is the face of a small sided soccer tournament that takes place at Bear Creek Park in June. Still some matters to be decided in Germany as well. The German Cup Final between Leverkusen and Bremen is tomorrow. Last match for Diego in a Bremen Jersey before he moves on to Italy. The first Relegation Playoff game (they are back after 18 Year hiatus) to the Bundesliga saw Bundesliga 2 side Nuernberg shock Cottbus (in Cottbus) by a score of 3:0 on Thursday. Great result that will make things almost impossible for the East German team in the return match on Sunday. The first Playoff game for a Spot in Bundesliga 2 between 3rd Division Paderborn and BL2 side Osnabrueck is tonight. Return match for that one is Monday.

Great causes for the Dynamo Game tomorrow, support both Craig Waibel and Brad Davis as they make a difference in the community.

American Outlaws will have a watchparty (and sendoff for the Chicago Traveling Contingent) on Wednesday for the US – Costa Rica game at the Mezzanine Lounge. Come watch the Game with your fellow US Supporters and if you are going to Chicago with us it is a great chance to meet everyone.

Texian Army still has a few spots on the second bus for the game in Dallas on the 13th of June. For more information go to http://www.texianarmy.org

Finally, the return of De Ro tomorrow. Should be an interesting match as emotions will run high.

Tuzos will come back and win.

  3. Edwin says:

Glenn, I think Philadephia has made 4 great moves with the name and logo as well as the colors and of course the water front stadium.
Now with the coach I think is an amazing choice, but the way Nowak is handling it I think is very bad, is leaving the US national team at a time when we are suffering with some injuries AND they are about to embark in one of the toughest and busiest summers outside of a World Cup year! Would it had hurt to wait another 10 days to quit the national team or a month so the Confederations Cup was finished for him to take charge of the Union? He could have flown up there to take posession of the job and asked to be allowed to finish the qualifiers and/or the Confederations Cup!
I think is a bit classless, although with Bob, he might just be running away in case there’s a bad result due to Bob’s crazy bunker down tactics!

Glenn, I think is amazing the Texian Army has 2 buses to go to Dallas and watch the game, that should be what about 100 people? I hope they break the 10K mark if you can’t do it for your in state rivalry how can you do it?
Oh and a very sad turnout for the last game vs San Jose 12K vs the team who has been trying to push your Dynamo around? Come on Houston you can do better than that, I know the atmosphere is great and all but that is nothing to be proud of compared to the 4K less fans FCD gets? We have to step up to the challenge like Toronto and seattle and the way it looks Portland and Vancouver will, Philly already has the biggest number as part of the supporters group, lets go soccer fans, lets fill those stadiums and show the world that we can make this into a world class league!

  4. Edwin says:

Glenn btw, I was at the game last night at HDC, and let me tell you the atmosphere was amazing, I am willing to say it was probably better than Robertson unless it was one of teh playoff games with 32K, but even then it was great, I think the true passionate Mexican soccer fans came out last night and supported Blanco who is being regarded as one of the key pieces to bring Mexico back to their levels of the past, a lot of America flags and jerseys last night, a lot of Mexico national team jerseys and flags, amazingly enough a lot of Chivas fans there to I guess support him for going back on the national team or to boo him as for being a former Aguila who might go back?

Chivas USA I think is turning into a fine franchise, the atmosphere is amazing they dress the HDC all Red, Blue and White kind of makes me think why doesn’t the USSF and AEG does this? And the fans from Orange County are actually pretty loyal! I think they are starting to tap into the grass roots of the southland and is paying off!
Can’t wait to see the next “Classico” when Chivas will be the “home team” and see if they can fill the HDC I love it when is completely full and even the grass berm is packed like it will be for the game vs AC Milan & Beckham’s now teamates and then opponents LOL

I was however a bit mad, they closed off the 2nd level of seats on the opposite side of the press boxes, I don’t know if it was because they wanted to fill the stadium 100% as far as the lower bowl to give it the Seattle effect or to make the ticket demand more but it seems to be they could of sold an extra 2-5K tickets easily if they had open it up a week before the game for sales, in any case I’ll be writting to them because this is not good for the game IMHO!

Blanco celebrated his 2 Pk’s with his classic arrow launching and Chivas put on a great show, Kljestan is finally looking like the player from 08 in Beijing, Galindo scored again, it looks like there’s 3 great team in the West, Chivas, Houston and Seattle, so Colorado & LA will fight for the 4th spot if the west gets 4 teams in the playoffs this year, I think RSL will have a sophmore slump the rest of the year, but what a great night for MLS soccer!

One last note, Bornstein has looked a lot better as of late, but based on last night against a great side like Chicago Fire with Rolfee, McBride and Blanco he did not look like he has any business in the starting line up at a much more hostile enviroment in Saprissa Stadium. I have heard Spector or Wynne for the RB spot since Hejduk is hurt, I hope Bob plays Wynne, is time and the 2 veterans are hurt, is time to give him a shot, put him in Bob!

  5. glenndavis says:

Thanks for the update on the HDC Edwin.
Atmosphere seemed great and Chivas USA seems to be making inroads above and beyond the impact of Blanco.
    Marvelle in Houston this weekend.

  6. Edwin says:

I am really looking forward to seeing Brad Davis vs Marvell Wynne, this one match up I have to see, I am having my friend stream it for me since he’ll see it on 11.2 but I obviously don’t get that channel here, and I won’t be home to catch on my MLS package, however Glenn I am a bit concerned with Marvell Wynne, Landon Donovan, Pablo Mastroeni, Sacha Kljestan and Jonathan Bornstein not being in camp already as well as Brian Ching, the Costa Rican league wrapped up tuesday and they have all of their domestic players in camp already and should have the ones who are done in Europe already, we are going to have a one day training, I’m a bit worried, if anything I guess Spector might get the nod over my favorite US RB Marvell Wynne and Beasley might get the go at LB since he should be in camp already, I don’t think they will use him for the Scottish cup at Rangers, I know this is what great nations do, but it would have been nice for Toronto and Chivas to release the players last night, Chivas after the game ofcourse, but we’ll see, always a pleasure to share my HDC experiences with you Glenn, will do the same for Gold Cup, AC Milan vs Galaxy game and the Rose Bowl experiences of Chelsea vs Inter and Galaxy vs FC Barcelona.

Let me know what you think of Wynne’s performance agianst what is arguably the best left wing play in the league! Hopefully he doesn’t have any handballs

  7. Mocte says:

Pumas will sin against all odds.

  8. Mocte says:

Ja, my phone changed the text it should be pumas will \

  9. Mocte says:

I’m giving up with this phone: will win

  10. Edwin says:

    Tuzos! Tuzos!

Also I hope Tim Howard can win another FA Cup, this would make his legacy just great!
