Thank you COLUMBUS , thank you GUILLERMO.
As much as I admire NEW YORK’s effort, this would have been a disaster if they won the MLS CUP in my opinion.
The second half was much more interesting going back to 142 countries world wide on a day that MLS did not fill out the HOME DEPOT CENTER.
GUILLERMO BARROS SCHELOTTO played a part in all three of the goals for COLUMBUS that came from ALEJANDRO MORENO, CHAD MARSHALL and FRANKIE HEJDUK.
*Circle these moments: 1. When ALEJANDRO MORENO scored to give COLUMBUS the lead one has to be critical of NY goalkeeper DANNY CEPERO. This was saveable.
Not hit particularly well by MORENO. CEPERO did not look good on this play.
2. After NEW YORK produced a nice goal to tie it through DANE RICHARDS and JOHN WOLYNIEC. You could hardly begin to believe that the luck
and fate had returned to the RED BULLS before CHAD MARSHALL lost former DYNAMO KEVIN GOLDTHWAITE and pounded in a header to re-gain
the lead.
3. SCHELOTTO clip a little ball to FRANKIE HEJDUK for goal number three was a thing of beauty and the capper on a day they were clearly the better team.
That other SOUTH AMERICAN SUPERSTAR JUAN PABLO ANGEL clearly looked frustrated as all_____ in this one. Mentioned during the broadcast was
the potential of him going back to RIVER PLATE IN ARGENTINA. The way NEW YORK played in the playoffs was clearly not enjoyable for ANGEL and not
how he will want to spend the twilight of his career. JUAN CARLOS OSORIO will have to do a real sell job on the playing style of the team next year in
order to keep him.
4. SIGI SCHMID I believe will be the next coach of SEATTLE . Now this could potentially be embarrassing for Columbus if they don’t keep him after
what he has done for this club this year and leading him to the title. On my radio show last Wednesday remember SCHMID mentioned that coaches
in MLS were underpaid (a clear message that he wants to be paid for his success). Now I will be Sigi’s agent and say to Columbus management to give
me the same as SCHELLAS HYNDMANN in Dallas . That would be $400,000 per season. See nobody should be jealous of SCHELLAS, they should be
thankful that he has set the standard for coaches pay in MLS. By the way, FC DALLAS is also owned by the Hunt Sports Group. Match it or more or
SIGI is SEATTLE bound.
Give me your thoughts on the Crew MLS CUP win, the environment at the HDC and the broadcast presentation?

the better team won and that’s all you can ask for. It was embarrassing that New York made it this far.
great for columbus. that chip from schelotto to kejduk was a thing of beauty. all three goals passed through schelotto…very deserving mvp.
columbus deserved to win
Crew’s 3rd goal was amazing. My father and step-mother (not the most devout MLS followers) were quite impressed with Schelotto’s and Hedjuk’s efforts. Congrats to Columbus. It was well-earned.
Just think, after Wednesday, there won’t be any more soccer in the country until USA/Mexico on February 11th.
With all due respect to NY, its winning would have been a PR nightmare. The better, more talented team won.
The game was a feel good effort for Dynamo fans. I’m glad for Cepero but his luck was bound to run out. that first goal was extremely lame after the save Cepero had in Houston and Salt Lake.
The stadium looked great but there were too many whole rows empty. Those seats should have been sold off at $10 a seat starting 5 mins before the game start. I bet there’s 50 tickets sitting in envelope in more than one corporate sponsor’s marketing office. What a shame!
Hats off to that crew in Dynamo orange near the Columbus corner. Made me proud to see our fans represented!
Cepero, Angel, and the NYRB didn’t look sharp today at all. I kept asking myself, “HOW did THIS team get into the Final?” BTW, Where is next year’s MLS Cup being held? Considering there are NO NFL clubs in LA the half-empty HDC says a TON about the fan supprot from Columbua and NY. Do you think the Dynamo will outdraw the MLS Cup for a midweek night game against Firpo? That should actually be close.
Columbus was the deserved winner and as Shield winners they were the best team in MLS over the course of the season and playoff. Congrats to them.
Nice that Cepero finally played back to his level after a few weeks of playing out of his mind. Where was that 2 weeks ago? Also, Angel has been largely invisible the last 2 games.
Good for Moreno that he got a goal in a final. Even better that Columbus got the lead.
For whatever reason this final seemed to lack a little of the fizz that it had the last few years, especially last year with Houston & NE.
Finally, Don Garber’s gotta be better in actually getting the captain’s name right on the Crew when handing over the cup!!
For the good of the league, I’m glad that Columbus won. And how about “Hey, Duck!” getting a goal in his first MLS Cup since he joined the league in 1996? It was a good one too.
Glenn,
What are your thoughts about Garber’s State of the League address? Some good and some curious items:
- Teams in the CONCACAF Champions League will not play in SuperLiga. Houston will play in the CCL.
- No more Reserve League (Houston is the final champion)
- Senior roster expanded from 18 to 20. Reserves reduced from 10 to 4.
- “There will be small growth in the salary cap.”
- MLS will take off 2 international dates next year and will go to a reduced schedule on four other weekends.
Congrats to Columbus on a great season and actually pulling of the “Double”. Now the work begins for them as they have to figure out the Coaching situation and what will GBS do? He won the MVP, Cup MVP and both the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup, sounds like a good time to go back to Argentina so stay tuned on that. Angel could be making a move as well and if both were to leave it would be a loss for the league.
Thank Goodness the Crew won! Realy liked the goals but especially #2 and #3. We were so relieved to see the “luck” start going Columbus’s way and NOT all NY as per the 2 previous games (post hits, narrow misses, etc). It would have been embarrassing to have a , what, 4th or 5th place reg season team win the MLS cup. The better team won, period.
WHY was the stadium so empty?? It would have been full here in Houston. See you all at Dynamo vs Firpo! Go Orange!!!
I credit Sigi w/this win but he could have easily been smacked w/a loss as this looked eerily like the Red Bull-Dynamo match for the first 45. Crew deserved the win on the day but if some of RBNY’s previous good fortune had taken hold, Crew could have easily been down two goals and swimming upstream like RSL and the Dynamo.
The Crew were not winning 50-50 balls, they weren’t holding possession, and they weren’t finding and feeding their talisman. I don’t remember Schelotto getting more than 9-10 touches the entire first half. But after letting Richards, Van Den Bergh and Wolyniec run wild w/nothing to show for their efforts, the Crew finally made the double-team adjustment at the half on Richards that the Dynamo did not and they effectively squashed any real threat from then on. By the second half, the Crew actually looked for AND FOUND Schelotto, his quality took over. End of.
Keep watch over the cup Columbus. We’ll be back for it next season.
Congrats to Columbus, but Glenn, big congrats to San Jacinto Jr. College for finishing second at the NJCAA National Tournament. The Coyotes went into the tournament with the second seed and advanced to the final, where they fell to Number 1 ranked Yavapai 1-0. A lot of local kids play for San Jac and Dr. Dave is a great coach. Congrats to San Jac for their amazing season!
Great to see Moreno score and as well to see Hey-Dude score off that delightful chip feed from Guille.
Hejduk was with Tampa back in ‘96 as an up and coming U.S. winger, he is the ONLY guy still around from the France ‘98 team and I love the man for his job at makeshift left back in ‘02. He is a true warrior on the field and to see him celebrate that last goal as the nail in the coffin for New Jersey…great moment for someone that has followed the league since the crests came out in ‘95.
I am also glad to see Schelotto outclass Angel on the big event. Angel played well, winning a lot of high balls and looked sharp…but Guille the Boca ledgend just played better!
justice.
As a lifelong Columbus supporter, I was ecstatic with the result…this will be wonderful for not only the city, but the entire organization and fans that have stuck with the Crew since ‘96. I have and always be proud to be a Crew fan.
And I give NYRB tons of credit for just being there…it just proves that anything could happen in the playoffs. This match could have easily went the other way, especially in the 1st half. For the 2nd half, it was all Crew after retaking the lead for good. And Frankie’s goal was magic…pure and simple.
Best of luck playing Firpo on Wednesday…will be watching and rooting for the Dynamo. And here’s hoping that the Crew plays the Dynamo in MLS Cup 2009.
One question that’s been on my mind…which team (Houston, NYRB, DCU) will join the Crew in the group stages of the next CCL?
