Won’t be able to call into night but will be listening. I would love to hear Dom’s take on why he protected certain players in the draft and why he left certain unprotected. I also would like to see how he feels about the way the expansion draft goes. Does he think it is fair? Does he think Landin will come into shape in preseason?
I would also like to know from Don Garber if he sees a work stoppage coming and should the City of Houston/Harris County be worried about this might happening with the Houston stadium issue out there. Here was an article from Grant Wahl today that was definitely a blow to the players ( “FIFA staying out of MLS union war” http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/soccer/11/23/fifa.mls/index.html ). Will Don be looking at playing MLS Cup in the future on a grass field in a home stadium (best record team in final)?
For all the kids that dream to be pro goalkeepers, I would like you to ask how he overcame his height disadvantage 5′9″ to become one of the best goalkeepers in the MLS and be the one of the best penalty kick stoppers?
i would have left oduro or weaver unprotected and kept chabala. if i were picking an expansion roster i would be going young and aggressive and on our list chabala would be my pick….seems odd to leave him umprotected when our backline is aging and slow, but who knows what philly’s intentions are…
i just hope holden does not get plucked by a euro club
I am in agreement about Chabala but I think Dom knows more than anyone who he has and who will be trying to bring in. Dom definitely knows how the pieces need to look more than the fans. Dom has had Chabala for 4 years and has seen him every practice session, in the the locker room so he knows what he is exposing.
INTERNATIONAL PLAYER PROTECTION REQUIREMENT:
• Teams may make available a number of international players equal to their total number of international players minus 3, provided that if a team has 3 or less international players it may make available not more than 1.
According to the Dynamo Web site we have 3 International players (Landin, Oduro, Hainault) meaning the Dynamo can only leave one of them unprotected. For some reason Pat isn’t considered as an international.
All that said the Dynamo choice was between protecting Oduro or Landin, They are betting that Philly will not use their DP slot on a expansion pick, a good bet I think. The choice was between Chabala and Weaver. We are heavy on defenders and light on forwards. The good news is that the mock drafts I have seen point to Philly taking ERob or Cochrane, maybe Chewie is still under the radar. Lets hope….not that I want to lose any of the three.
I actually think ERob has another good season in front of him as long as his knee holds up. He doesn’t have a whole lot of mileage on him this year so he should be rested up and ready to go.
Another question for Don Garber:
I know the single entity system has kept costs under control for the league but isn’t there a balance between keeping costs under control or losing a lot of good players to Europe (we are losing players to Danish and Swedish leagues???) Don’t you think that if we continue to hold salaries where they are at, the MLS will start to become a farm league for Europe at cheap price? Also why do we have a youth academy league that is required for every MLS team but have no reserve league to put them in after they graduate?
Pat Onstadt’s not protected ? Who woulda thunk it ?
And why are we protecting Stu when he hasn’t been all that shy about wanting to be shipped to Scotland ? Why not put him out there, and protect Chabala ?
Landon Donovan to Mexican Club America and be at the rob in January interliga?

Donovan is not going to America. Dont believe everything you read. I could believe Donovan to Bayern 1860 but America… come on… Oh well, who cares about LA Galaxy news anyway.
Glenn, great interview with Garber last night. I appreciate you asking the tough questions. Don Garber has done a great job in his 11 years with MLS. He has understood history and has not repeated it. I do hope he can do some real reflection on the league and fix the things that need to be fixed.
We are a soccer nation that is a lot smarter than we were 11 years ago. Also the sports fan in this country is very spoiled in the conveniences we have and you must react quicker to change as well as meet the needs of your customer. MLS is no exception. In fact, MLS has do things better than other sports leagues because we are still trying to gain acceptance in the mindset of not just sports fans but true soccer fans.
Actually, there have been whispers about Donovan and Club America for quite some time. I’m not saying its going to happen (I’m not sure MLS ever wants to sell him, though a loan agreement could be different). Though, if he goes, I hope that he can find a way to get lots of playing time. No use going down there just to sit on the bench.
If it happens, I think he’ll be fine for them. He would learn a lot and gain valuable experience. We’ll see.
I think it’s just gonna be on loan if it does happen because donovan said that Bruce arena wants him back next season and basically what Bruce wants, bruce gets. And I don’t think he would warm the bench with America. They play with only one fwd, cabanas, who draws a lot of attention and Donovan would fit perfect right behind him. I strongly dislike America but will become a fan if he does go there. I rather see him in pumas though.
