The team that no one wanted, Atlante are the champions of the Mexican Apertura.
A dramatic 2-1 win over Pumas capped off an amazing season for the team that moved from Mexico City to Cancun.
Not since 1993 when Ricardo La Volpe was the coach have Atlante won the title. The winning side was coached by Jose Guadalupe Cruz and included former Colorado Rapid Alain Nkong from Cameroon.
Come to think of it the last time the Colorado Rapids looked interesting was when the creative player was beginning to adapt to MLS and a playmaking role a few seasons back.
The game winnning goal came from Clemente Ovalle in stunning style as he hit an absolute rocket from about 22 yards that beat Sergio Bernal to the upper corner.
The story is a great one in that Atlante were true under-dogs in the Mexican Football league and don’t have big name players.
A few more people now know about Alain Nkong……And this is why they play the game.
