NE midfielder Khano Smith provided the lone goal in a 1-0 win over FC Dallas at the Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, TX.
Despite missing 6 starters NE again proved resiliant and difficult to play against which is a trademark of Steve Nicol coached squads.
Entrusting key roles to young players in this one did not phase NE although some poor decisions from Khano Smith and Amaechi Igwe late provided FC Dallas dangerous free kicks as they upped the pressure in the later stages…….here are a few thoughts.

*Arturo Alvarez and Ken Cooper are going to score goals but the good news for them is that they have not realized their potential as a pair. These two are still figuring out how to play as ONE. In fact Alvarez will need to figure out the movement side of the game as a forward and on occasion needs to come central and check back to the ball in the whole to compliment slashing in from wide areas.

* Did Alvarez get clipped in the penalty area by Jay Heaps, didn’t look like it but why go down when you beaten him?

* FC Dallas needed a strong personality to step up in midfield, apart from their final sense of urgency they really could not figure out how to break down the deeper defending Revolution. The could not get behind them.

* Ken Cooper Jr. also was not as evident holding the ball around the penalty area and it is an area of his game that he needs to be succesful at with his frame. Being that big and strong means he should create time for his squad by holding things up.

*The Revs still remain one of the best coached teams in the league and will be in it at the end again. They have offset losses in the off-season the past few years including Clint Dempsey and Pat Noonan and have created I believe more depth and youthful potential.

* We all must remember that in a league that relies on a playoff system it sort of de-values the regular season to a degree.
If it was a single table system then their would be more concern for those teams losing points in the early part of the season like the Houston Dynamo.

Glenn, I only caught the second half but your comments were on point.

On Alvarez, I really like his talent and his aggressiveness, but he seems to do silly things like diving tonight (I think he barely got touched, if at all) or picking up the red card in the playoff game last year vs. the Dynamo. He doesn’t need to do that stuff to be a top player in this league. Richardinho also seems to be a whiner out on the field with the diving and the antics.

Atmosphere seemed dead at PHP. I know it is a Thursday school night but it was a morgue. Doesn’t add up that a strong soccer community would ignore its team.

I love Matt Reis; always seems to come up with the one or two big saves (except maybe MLS Cup) and stays composed on the field.

The only way there were 10K at that game is if the shady side was jam packed.

Booring atmosphere (what where the Inferno and Torros doing?). Though I will say two things about FCD: 1)They’ve got a nice stadium 2)They had $1 Beer!!! Imagine $1 Beer at Robertson :D

Here’s hoping Alvarez keeps on improving cause him with Rogers, Holden, Adu and Edu in a midfield would be lethal.

    mr. garber,

I hope you were watching the game last night and saw how pathetic the crowd is for fc dallas. i know they have a nice big stadium and blah blah blah, but what is it all if there is nobody there to support them. what will it take to get support for them they are playing some of the best futbol in the league and nobody shows up. i was embarassed for them and i hate fc dallas, there couldn’t have been but 500 to 1000 people there from what i saw from tv, and whomever said there were 10,000 must have been on a serious acid trip seeing tracers of people counting 10 people for one person. so before you make your threats to one of the most supported teams in the league saying you will not hesitate to move them, maybe you should take a look up north mr. garber and try and rectify the real problems and not make a mountain out of a molehill, maybe it was me but before your horrible e-mail i think everybody knew it was going to get done just was going to take some time and negotiation, and with YOUR threats have turned the inevitable to doubtful. SO HEAR IS TO THE WORST COMMISH IN THE BUISNESS. CHEERS, and come on boys time to pick up 3 this weekend and get it rolling.

Yes, FCD’s attendance is weak. Then again, Don Garber isn’t threatening to move FCD anywhere.

I agree the Revs system is effective, but it is soul crushing to watch, GD. Along with Clavijo, they both coach a “paint-drying” style that leaves one feeling both dirty and disgusted afterwards. The Revs are the perfect realization of every soccer haters truest suspicions about the game of soccer. The Nicol-led Revs are the equivalent of attending a Pink Floyd show stone sober, listening to side two of Sting’s “Soul Cages”, watching “Paris, TX”, reading Beowolf, watching a production of “The Crucible”….life is way too short to devote to these things.
