England takes on Bulgaria in European qualifying…….Catch it on FSC Friday at 2pm CST

Ok, my game plan here is to head over to Stags Head Pub on Portsmouth to catch the England/Bulgaria game at 2pm.
Hope to see a few of you there.
Despite my want to watch this game, I also have to admit that I feel it is almost bizarre that we are watching meaningful international football.
I am still digesting this summer’s World Cup and here we are getting set for the “new” England under Italian manager Fabio Capello.
What will happen next? Will the ghost of Hristo Stoichkov and Yordon Letchkov show up for Bulgaria? Or even better, will Dimitar Berbatov, retired from Bulgaria show up at Wembley?
Joking aside, this is qualifying play for Euro 2012. Although there are alot of questions around England how can we for one second not think they will beat a Bulgarian side that has not won a game at a major tournament since 1996.
You have to go back to 1994 for Bulgaria’s finest moment as they reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in the United States stunning Germany in the process at Giants Stadium 2-1 by scoring twice in the final fifteen minutes through a Stoichkov free kick and a Letchkov header. German fans slowly sulked out of Giants Stadium that day.

As for England it seems there are “no question’ selections in Joe Hart, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Gareth Barry, Ashley Cole, Glen Johnson and Phil Jagielka.
The only way they struggle here is if it is self-inflicted. Then again, this was a less than inspiring team at the World Cup. Can you say “Theo Walcott should get a start”?
Fabio Capello has been singing the praises of Wayne Rooney in the press after Rooney scored in the 3-0 win over West Ham.

WYNALDA as an assistant?
Well this is what the FSC commentator told me recently. That he is on a short list to be an assistant to U.S. manager Bob Bradley? So is Bradley going to change assistants like Mike Sorber or Lubos Kubik (yes he was an assistant in the shadows somewhere) and will this freshen up the ideas of the team? Will this be how the team avoids getting comfortable with it’s ideas? All fair and interesting questions?
Not sure how much coaching Eric Wynalda has been doing these days but does that even matter?

Lovel Palmer will be out for not only the Dynamo/San Jose game but also the Toronto FC game which is where he will actually serve his suspension for ejection against the Colorado Rapids. The Jamaica will be on international duty during the upcoming weekend.

ARTURO and WONDO return……..
Arturo Alvarez and Chris Wondoloski both have ties to Houston. Alvarez played at Mayde Creek High School and with Texas Premier Youth Soccer Club. His biggest moment this year was a 90 minute game winner at PPL Park against the Union. Wondoloski has simply scored 8 goals to lead the Quakes. Always liked Chris and his effort and commitment to the cause. He is having a career year.
By the way, the Dynamo have great ticket packages at Houstondynamo.com that are perfect for this Labor Day Weekend clash (no pun intended) between these friends and rivals.

A few MLS teams are still seeking out a lucrative shirt sponsor. One that hasn’t even kicked a ball, Portland, just bagged Alaska Airlines.
Free upgrades for Spencer’s boys? To the best of my knowledge, NE, FC Dallas, Philadelphia and Colorado are all sans a jersey sponsor.
I have to believe the fan support and relevancey of the Timbers in their market has helped to sell their shirt deal!!

Wynalda on the US team might create some healthy tension with Bradley. Eric has been outspoken with his criticism of our fighting spirit during the final qualifiers and he has always questioned loyalties to certain players. But, you can only tell the emperor he has no clothes a handful of times before that message gets old. Wynalda better have some solutions instead of just pointing out problems.

The timbers are going to be fun to watch. Besides having a coach that will make them an energetic and hard charging team, the Timber Army is a lot like Seattle’s fans only with dirt under their nails and a bit more attitude. That rivalry will be fun to watch. And the Timber stadium is the bomb! yes, they are starting from an existing, very nice baseball stadium converted to a soccer stadium. but it will rival the NYRB stadium and far surpass the bleacher-feeling stadiums like the CO, Columbus, and Dullass stadiums. I hope ours has more of that feel.

I still have hope for our Dynamo since they have not stopped showing their pride for the Shirt. hopefully our mix on Sunday takes a step forward from the Fire game and erases any similarities to the CO lineup. DVR’ing to watch the game after my camping trip. Go Dynamo!!
