Dynamo/Sporting KC post game analysis

The Dynamo got a pair of goals from Calen Carr and defeated the Eastern Conference’s number one team Sporting KC 2-1.

Scoring summary:

25th Carr
42nd Kamara
45+ Peterson Joseph ejected
79th Carr

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF RED CARDS
The Dynamo have played a man up in their last two games for 118 minutes out of 180. Against DC United they scored four goals a man up and last night ultimately got a game winner from Calen Carr .
After the ejection Sporting KC clearly defended deep and rarely looked a threat on the counter. They truly missed the axis of Graham Zusi in midfield.

GAME CHANGER
Sporting KC started youth in Peterson Joseph and Michael Thomas.
Joseph would make a rash , reckless challenge that would get him sent off and change the game. It was a youthful moment.

KINNEAR ARRANGES LINEUP
Dominic Kinnear continued the 4-3-3 set up but this time started Calen Carr to great success out wide moving Boniek Garcia into the interior of midfield.
Warren Creavalle the rookie continued to gather experience getting a start in central midfield in the holding role.
WIth Geoff Cameron likely to move to Stoke, Adam Moffat injured as of late and rumor of a return of Ricardo Clark it will be interesting to see where the holding role finally ends up.

CARR GAME WINNER
Boniek Garcia hit a wonderful ball to Carr at the top of the box. Carr then played it out wide to Brad Davis with the outside of his foot and then just powered into the box scoring the goal.

DYNAMO DELIVERY
Dynamo delivery off crosses was solid with balls whipped in with pace throughout the night that looked threatening.

POSITIONED WELL
With lots of home games, a new system, potential of transfer money for re-investment you can only say that things look bright for the Dynamo who next take on Montreal this Saturday.

BONIEK FACTOR
He has made the team and those around him better. He has increased the competition and his attitude and boundless energy comes at a perfect time for the Dynamo.

As a rookie, Warren did good but if Houston had a stronger player at Defensive Mid (like Geoff Cameron provided the other day against DC United) the Dynamo would’ve gotten more goals. It would be interesting if Ricardo Clark came back assuming he’s still playing well cause he use to “own” that position. When did Adam Moffat get hurt? During practice? He only played shortly after getting his red card I thought? I like Mac Kandji, he’s fast and is comfortable taking on defenders one v. one but it seems like his game awareness and cognitive skills are somewhat lacking. I question his pass and shot selections too. He has all the physical tools to be a great player and really stand out but I feel that the reasons I mentioned earlier are indicators as to why he was traded to Houston. As of now Mac Kandji is my mom’s favorite player, although he frustrates her (haha!) whereas Davis, Ching, Camargo, and Garcia are mine. I’m still waiting on Luiz Camargo to come out of his shell and gain some confidence. Go Dynamo!

Outside of the sweat fest that was last night, this was an ugly, ugly win. Re: “Dynamo delivery off crosses was solid with balls whipped in with pace throughout the night that looked threatening.” The crosses, whether coming in from Davis [who looked WAY off his game last night] or Hainult, etc., were horrific. They came in low, they came in slow, they came into the head of a SKC player more often that not, they came in behind the Dynamo player[s]… Carr’s game winning goal was a fluke, I’m not even sure it was his intent to put it in the back of the net – he may have just been in the right place at the right time and it bounced off him. I’m review the video lowlights to confirm.

It sure is looking like we have 3 holding midfield players on this team – I’m still convinced either 1) Dom won’t let the midfield take a shot, 2) they’re loath to shoot, 3) they have no confidence in their shot, 4) they think their forwards are better equipped to shoot, or 5) they have no attacking instinct.

Re: “…and rumor of a return of Ricardo Clark it will be interesting to see where the holding role finally ends up.” We need another holding midfielder like we need a hole in our head. We’re already flush with ‘em [see above].

Kandji, how can you be so big and quick yet get pushed off the ball 2 out of every 3 times you have the ball at your feet ?

Will, am feeling sorry for you as of late. You’re running around, acting like you’re pressuring their back line when they’re taking it out of their third, and it’s having little to no effect. And to cap it off, you’re ending up having roughly 6 touches on the ball all night. My apologies.

Corey/Brad, work on your right foot for Christ’s sake.

Oscar, get some ice on that back. You were clearly hurting last night.

Dom, you’re getting way late in subbing players. I know you’re trying to hit that magic 70 or 80 minute mark, but when you’re guy ain’t getting it done [Captain or not], pull him.

    Rant over.

calm down feller, we won… Bruin is having problems because he is used to the 4 4 2 set up. I think he told Glenn it was what he played in college. The players aren’t used to this system. Some have played it before and some have not. You got to remember all positions have different jobs and responsibilities than what they used to in this formation. For an entire team to switch gears like that in the middle of a season and not lose a game in it is pretty damn impressive if you ask me.
Dom’s subs are spot on. He brings subs on around 60th minute and holds one back for injury. you gotta remember Garcia is holding his back half the game and Ashe looked like he was in trouble just last game.
I think Creavalle and Ownby are going to turn out to be fantastic players. Another great pick up for Kinnear. Ownby’s speed is very deceptive.

  4. Doug says:

We picked up a very important 6 points but since we played most of those games against 10 men, I’m not convinced we’re contenders yet. What’s up with Hainault? He doesn’t seem to be nearly the defender he was 2 years ago.
I think the crosses were great but at some point you have to try something different and go up through the middle occasionally (like on the 2nd goal).
Hope to see another 3 points on Saturday night!

“Joseph would make a rash , reckless challenge that would get him sent off and change the game. It was a youthful moment.” If you watch the highlights you will see Joseph spit at Carr while he is on the ground. Should be banned extra games for his actions.

did not like how Dynamo played the last ten minutes of time. Gave KC too many opportunities to get back into the game. They needed to continue to control the ball and should have gone for another goal keeping KC back on their heals.

  6. Glenn Daviss says:

At this point you don’t want to be playing your best soccer quite frankly.
It is imperative to find their game at the right time again like last year.
They scored another goal from a central area in the DC game again albeit against ten men.

  7. manny rivademar says:

Glenn: The difference in this game was Cameron. He was not there to provide the long passes or passes up the middle, etc. to make a difference. The team needs a player like him. I thought Camargo was the man but he seems timid and afraid to go all out. It was a good game for Carr and Creavalle I thought played very well. He is getting good playing time and is not afraid to mix it up. I still think Garcia needs to be on the wings terrozing the defense. He has tremendous speed and he is good with the ball at his feet. I think this team is possibly a MF and a striker from being an “elite” team in this league. They won last nite but it wasn’t as pretty as the previous game. Still a win is a win!

  8. Tinman says:

The KC match saw a lack of end line play by the Dynamo. When the guys got there it created goal scoring opportunities. Big Mac is playing well but very physical. He was lucky against DC but was carded against KC.
Tip of the hat to Carr for hanging in there after nearly missing the whole season last year. Credit should be given to Dom for believing in him. After watching the Dallas, San Jose match we are lucky to have Dom as our coach. Dallas has some big problems.
Now it time for the bad things.
Hall continues to have problems talking to his defenders. There was two or three plays where it almost became a big problem for us.
Free Weaver and let him sign with another club. He should be playing somewhere but after dropping the ball with Wondo I can see why the dynamo want to hang on to him.
Lets get three points against the Canadians sorry Andre
    Go Dynamos
