The Dynamo got beat 2-1 at Buck Shaw Stadium on the campus of Santa Clara University last night. Kei Kamara and Ivan Guerrero getting goals for San Jose and Brian Ching scoring for the Dynamo.
The game aired on ESPN2 and I am sure many Dynamo fans saw this game.
What other than the loss did you take away from this game? Here are my thoughts:
*Small field did not benefit Dynamo . I know Robertson is tight but it just seemed like fluid play was missing all around for extended periods. A larger surface at this time period would benefit the Dynamo. Tough to judge things.
*San Jose predictably was a different team “energy and effort” wise than last weekend against NE.
* I keep thinking of the potential abscences in the future with World Cup qualifying and Olympics. Onstad, DeRosario, Ching, Clark, Holden, Ianni, Ashe………This is going to be a tough period for MLS…

Two Words: Embarrasing Performance
The build up to this game was all about Dynamo players going back to their San Jose home. Seeing old friends blah, blah, blah.
Dom tried to put the good face on it by saying they were going on a business trip not vacation but in the same breath talks about going to his favorite sandwich shop and players going to see old friends after the game.
It was obvious the majority of the team was out there on vacation or a boondoggle. Hell, I even saw Dom on the telecast smiling and waving to someone in the crowd unconcerned that the Dynamo were stinking it up on the field.
Dero’s touch and passing were off all night. Mullen did not play one first time ball into the area and continually held the ball up allowing defenders to get behind the ball and then disposses him (he looks SLOW this year). The Mulrooney playing in the back experiment has got to end. He was flat footed and ball watching on the first goal and not marking his man in the area (Not the first time that has happended this year mind you). Ching continued to struggle and did very little till the end when it was virtually to late. If Holden could just put a header on target he has a goal. Lets not even talk about Boswell and his lack of concentration.
Fortunately the Dyanmo at least had a chance late because of the professionalism and maturity of Pat Onstad. He was the only player that turned in a complete professional performance. Ricardo Clark at least had some effort and determination in his game.
In previous losses this year I was not so upset because the team defended well, passed well and linked well through the midfield. The only thing missing was the goals and you always felt the goals would come eventually. Unfortunately, last night they were just plain bad.
ABSOLUTLY TOTALLY EMBARASSING!!! You might want to put a little more effort out there fellas. With the exception of the faces I could have sworn the teams switched jersey’s, we were being pressured all night and we were just loafing around as if it was no big deal to be embarassed by the worst team in the league.
I have to agree with the other two posts. The game was very hard to watch. That is not the same Dynamo that won two titles. They couldn’t hold onto the ball for more than a minute before San Jose would take it away. No one was going to the ball, but just waiting for it to come to them–meanwhile San Jose would go to it and take it. San Jose deserved the win and deserved to win by more than 1.
Dero’s lackluster performance has been going on since last year. It all started around the time he hadn’t negotiated a new contract. His passing is horrible and he can’t seem to score goals. No wonder he didn’t end up playing in Europe…he doesn’t deserve it. He plays around so much with the ball that eventually three players surround him and take it. He has two goals on the year…one of those a deflection that belongs to Clark.
What a sad lost!
Glenn, did Dynamo lost a step somewhere since 12 months ago? Did age finally caught up with our stars?
The great team work that we saw from the past two years seems to be lost. There are only 2 significant players change from last year. Boswell at Defense and Caraccio at Forward.
Absolutely the worst game the Orange played this year and possibly last year as well. I kept waiting for something to happen and sure enough it happened in the last 5 minutes of the game. Much too little and too late. What is Mulrooney doing back there? His passes are horrible. Mullan has slowed down this year and seems to want to hold on to the ball instead of passing to a trailing teamate, what’s with that? DeRosario was taking windsprints and nothing more. He was totally missing from the game as well as Ching for the first 85 minutes. In short, this game was a terrible disappointment to loyal fans who are passionate about their Orange. Obviously, they are the only ones that show passion, the Orange sure as heck did not show any with that effort. I was confused, was this the same team that played Chicage a week ago? Evidently, Kinnear felt the same. He declined to be interviewed, he must have been outraged! I hope he benches some of the players, including the stars. Let them know he will not tolerate nothing but the best they have to give on the pitch!
I think the argument that the team wasn’t in need of improvement is wearing very thin. I’m not calling for a complete overhaul of the team. There are some quality players that definitely belong, but the team did not do anything in the off-season to make itself any better. The team needed to add at least two quality offensive players to sharpen the team’s competitive edge. As a result, complacency and mediocrity has seeped into the squad. The status quo mentality is hurting the franchise because other teams made obvious efforts to improve. For the first time in the short history of the franchise I genuinely feel like the team is one step behind everybody else.
They did have a tough game and the effort wasn’t there on Thursday night. I believe Dom will figure out what is going on. He has done it the past 2 seasons. The problem Dom has right now is he has a nucleus of players who won 2 championships in a row. Are they hungry to win 3 in a row? Probably not. They still have a target on their back from other teams (they are the champs) and they will have to get hungry and play a lot harder than they are doing if they want to win again. I don’t think Dom will push the panic button but I think he will shake the lineup a bit. Remember what happened when he put “hungry” players in like Holden and Ashe in last year when Dom didn’t have a choice? They began to win. Dom has to find those hungry players who want to fight for every ball and really want to be out there.
