Who would have thought that five goals would be scored in the span of fifteen minutes?
I certainly didn’t.
Yet in the end that time period was decisive.
Ryan Johnson and Arturo Alvarez put the Earthquakes up 2-0 but the Dynamo equalized things through Chris Wondoloski and a moment of brilliance from Brad Davis.
The game winning goal from Cam Weaver off a touch from Darren Huckerby could have been called offside as it seemed Weaver was behind the last line of the Dynamo defense.
The game was an up and down open affair for the majority with teams getting chances on both ends yet neither team ever truly seemed in “control”.
The Dynamo could as easily have won this game by three goals. A tough game to break down as at times it was on the brink of being out of control.
The second half included very direct play with midfield being by-passed and we saw little of playmakers Brad Davis, Arturo Alvarez and Bobby Convey.
In fact I wondered if that trio was even there as they fruitlessly chased back in forth without seeing much of the ball.
In the 75th minute San Jose began to defend deep to protect the one goal lead and in the end they got through it…..Next up for the Dynamo is DC United on the road and the word is that new striker Ade Akinbiyi will be back from England and could be available in DC. provided all his paperwork goes through.
I had a chance to sit and talk with him in Houston today at his hotel and his interview will air on Dynamo All Access with Glenn Davis Monday night from 7-9 pm on 790 The Sports Animal.
Post your thoughts on the Dynamo game and the U.S. 2-2 draw at El Salvador and Mexico’s 2-0 win over Costa Rica with Omar Bravo scoring…….

I saw more to be positve about in the loss than negitive personally. I mean the attack was back and the Dynamo were going at people. I really enjoyed the wide open play. The back line needs to get it together, but I think they will. By the way Arturo Alvarez ran across the face of goal and made everyone look like they were in slow motion. No doubt about the offsides by the way. I like and appreciate ambition in a team and the Dynamo have gotten there’s back. It’s not how you start it’s how you finish. By the way, nice job doing the game. You and Charlie were in good voice.
I don’t know if you have had a chance to watch the US game yet but if you haven’t get ready because it was hard to watch. Sacha K needs to sit down and let some one else have those minutes in the middle. That guy could be Torres who looked much more creative in the short time he was out there. This team has all the ambition of a Katrina victim. I mean they put on the red, white, and blue and become stale, passing robots that will not try to take anybody on 1 V 1. Something needs to change. We need to put somebody out there that demands the ball and does something with it when he gets it. I don’t care that he’s not getting games, we need to put Freddy Adu out there and let him dance. I mean a lack of games hasn’t stopped us starting Heath Pierce at left back for the last spell of games so why not Freddy. No games didn’t stop Jozy from scoring. We got out played by a side that shouldn’t be able to handle our attack. But then again we don’t attack. Nobody really looks like they want the ball. Also the team looked like it was totally unprepared. Along with a bad touch, the communication between the players was noteable by it’s absense. The center mids are in the center backs laps. Therefore we at times have no midfield in the center of the field. when D. B. and Clint are going into the middle to win balls then something is wrong. Yes I know about the bucket midfield, but that takes away the very advantage that Dempsey and Beasley give us out wide. Glenn, am I asking too much from our boys, that play in the best leagues in the world, to play entertaining soccer? I think that we now can truly say that we have world class players, is that what we saw Saturday? I mean I saw Landon Donovan get precious little service and then give it up when there was the least bit of trouble. This is not the same guy I watched on trail at Bayern. He’s not the same guy that carries L.A. If we have world class players, do we have a world class coach? This is a burning question in my mind.
My three comments on the Dynamo tonight, from your previous blog:
1. Wade Barrett is SLOW! Glenn, seriously, you and I could outrun Wade and get in on goal. Dom is a loyal guy, but he needs to realize that he will lose more games than he will win with Wade out there. The proof is on the field.
2. Brian Mullan couldn’t score in a San Jose house of ill-repute last night. It was attrocious finishing from Brian and it probably cost us three points last night. I love Mulls as much as anyone here in Houston, but someone needs to tell Dom to stop putting him up top. I would rather see Cameron or Cruz up top than Mullan. Thank goodness we will have Kei and Ching back next week.
3. We did not deserve to win that game last night. Our tactics were flawed and very rarely did we work the ball from touchline to touchline and try to stretch SJ apart. That game was comprable to a U15 kickball game where each team has a fast forward. Just kick and and let them go get it. I am really surprised that we did not fix the tactics at halftime and try to be more patient.
My comments on the USA game:
1. Demarcus Beasley was a complete waste of space. When he played in the midfield, he didn’t make any penetrating runs, his touch was way too heavy, and after about 20 minutes, he had disappeared. When Boob Bradley put him in the defense, it was worse. His shite defending directly led to the second goal being scored by El Salvador. Also, never once did I see him make an overlapping run of Torres to exploit space behind him. He looked like one of those old Italian defenders that just sits back and defends.
2. Boob Bradly was completely out coached in this match. El Salvador came in with a plan to soak up the US pressure and then counter attack like a hammer. The wings were left open and we rarely made the effort to go there, instead looking to play into Ching and have him combine with someone. That did not work early because of the way El Salvador dropped back, so tactics needed to be changed, and they were not! The US got their point tonight because they were the superior side, but Glenn, we were definitely a man short on the bench tonight!
Thoughts from around the world:
1. The Dutch looked great destroying Scotland yesterday.
2. FSC needs to stop showing Iran matches. Watching them is worse than watching my freshmen team play.
3. England dominated like they should have, and finally, they have a world class looking kit! One of them is on it’s way to Coach H’s place as we speak!
4. Diego Maradona is fat. Geez, the boy has put the weight on and lots of it. However, I bet even he could blow past Wade Barrett and get in on goal!
Your thoughts?
I watched the game via TiVo on mls direct kick. The announcers said Dom got sent off near the end of the game. I haven\’t seen it mentioned anywhere else. Did he get sent off or just head into the locker room early? Anyone know?
Also, are there any audio clips of Dom as he was walking to the locker room? A couple of years ago, Dom set a world record for the number of F Bombs dropped in one sentence. It was amazing, and what was priceless was the look on Pat Onstad\’s face when he did it!
Top site you have here. Really enjoy reading it. Would you be able to email me when you get the chance? There is something they would like to run by you.
I was dismayed about how listless the US men looked for the first 70 minutes of their match. What gives?
That being said… are their any watching parties for this Wednesday night?
Glenn-
Don’t know if you caught the Rapids vs. Wizards game on Sat. with the heavy MLS schedule and WC qualifier.
But as we talked in the past don’t know how Gary Smith can justify not starting Terry Cooke.
Cooke scored on beautiful bending free kick immediatley after entering mid way in second half and was legitimate threat every time he touched ball coming down right side.
Other thoughts on MLS weekend-
Continued disappointment with Rapids and FC Dallas fan support. I realize economy in dumper but both these teams have excellent soccer specific stadiums and get lousy attendance. The weather in Dallas was perfect on Sunday for Chivas match, yet only 6,000 + show up.Hate to think what Dallas will draw when hot weather sets in.
Agreed 100% with statement from Jose Mourinho in regards to Beckham. Was nothing more than a money grab and way for Beckham to shill his Academies and other endorsements. If he was truley interested in ” growing soccer in the states and MLS” he would be here. Mourinho spoke truth, not varished spin put out by Garber, Arena
Travis, there will be a watchparty at 6:30 PM this Wednesday at the Mezzanine Lounge (59 & Greenbriar)hosted by the American Outlaws Houston Chapter and the Texian Army. We had over 60 people out for the one on Saturday, thanks to all that came out. The timing at the end of the US Game and the Dynamo Game start had us watching both at the same time, thankfully the Mezz has plenty of TV’s.
I haven’t been able to see any of the Dynamo’s highlights, I was watching the US get schooled by a bunch of nobodys and then couldn’t find the energy to look for the game.
But it sounds like they miss ERob, and that they cannot find speedy wing backs fast enough, I think Cameron might find himself playing a lot on the defensive wings if they keep getting burned, can you say Dane Richards?
Also I hope Ching stays with the Dynamo, he can help them so much more, and really has no business in the National team with Jozy playing the way he does! Imagine if he was playing in Spain?
As far as subs, well between Kenny Cooper, Charlied Davies and now Eddie Jonhson they should be okay, Ching is just a waste of a forward for USMNT!
Hejduk might of seemed like a hero, but he literary pushed Jozy out of the way to score on that goal, and was completely schooled by Salvadorian defenders all night long!
Beasley was very bad, but nearly as bad as Heath Pearce, and Sacha Kljestan, I mean come on, he had an okay game against Sweeden’s B team, big deal, and Pearce can’t get PT consistantly at a 2nd division Bundesliga team that is soon to be in 3rd division, are you telling me Spector who is a starter at a mid level EPL team in West Ham can’t do better than him? He isn’t a lefty but has played there before, is there really a need to bring in Jonathan Bornstein? He is useless and proved it against Sweeden, why not Wynne and put Spector at LB so if he needs more help past Boca, Gooch can help, Wynne would cover the Right wing easily!
Jose Fransisco Torres played like a starter on Saturday, he actually demanded the ball!
Like I said I’m not willing to say Beasley is out completely unless they put Dempsey at LM or Adu! He did have a run at the goalie people, and where in the hell was Boca when beasley was getting beaten on the second goal? Where was Bradley to help Hejduk?
Absolutely horrible!
Glenn, is the Dynamo basically saying that none of those guys from El Salvador or Costa Rica or Honduras can help them nor do they fit Dom’s system of hard work and whatever it is that he wants to play?
NY signed the RB from El Salvador, and another 2 Costa Rica national team members if I’m not mistaken, hell the RB Pacheco they got on loan for 30K! You can’t tell me they can’t go and get someone like Castillo or Zelaya from that national team?
I sure hope this 34 year old from the Championship who plays in a team that is probably about the same as any other MLS team and not even getting minutes can put up some goals! He should have an easy time with the physical aspect of the game at least!
Glenn: I thought the Orange played well considering they were rather thin up front. With this new signing of Ade Akinbiyi, the Orange will have depth up front with Ching, Kamara and Wondolowski. I expect another signing or two plus Hennault when his papers become official. I like the depth that Kinnear is putting together. I agree with most of the other posts that Barret is slow and should come off the bench instead of starting. James is still tentative to me and plays with too much caution. Saturday was the first time I saw Cruz play and I liked what I saw! Cameron is going to be a player in this league, the problem is at what position? I would rather see him up front with his long stride and booming kicks. Holden is beginning to come around. It won’t be long before he scores several goals and his confidence will be sky-high. Mulrooney kicks too many unnecessary long passes. You definitely have to get down the pitch in a hurry, but for heavens sakes, take time with your passes. Make them count. At times the passing is positively atrocious, it’s like you want to get rid of the ball anyway you can. Many times it’s kicked toward your own goal in traffic. Look where you pass. The game is quick and there is no doubt of it but Mullan passed to an opposing player when there was no one near him and it led to a score. Later, he held his head in shame. I think Holden needs to get more involved with his playmaking. He is a good passer and should demand the ball. Rico is another good passer. All in all I am satisfied as to the progress of the team. I get the feeling they are going to respond to these new additions and who knows, that Mexican star they team is looking for, just might come along. Go Orange.
I’m thinking outside the box here so I’m going to throw out an idea I have and somebody can feel free to tell me if I’m an idiot. In regard to putting speed at the outside back position, what about moving Mullan to the back? You could either move in Ashe or you could get really crazy and move Holden to Mullan’s wing, Rico to attacking mid, and Mulrooney at defensive mid?
Thanks Offebacher. I’ll be there.
Paul I don’t think you want Holden at the wing, but more important, I think taking Rico out of his roles at defensive Mid is taking away his candy at recess!
The guy is a beast, I think between Boswell, James and Hennault they are fine, plus when ERob comes back you’re set, you will need 2 back ups when you think about injuries and Erob’s suspensions, but I think the wings are a problem, unless Cameron wants to commit to a wing spot on D, I think he is wasted there, he should be on the wing, but in the midfield, can Julius James play on the wing instead of CB? Also I think Barett and whoever else plays in the other wing are getting old and maybe slow as well, the Dynamo should look into developing a few outside defenders from their academy and should look into drafting outside wings, that’s one of the most abundant positions out there! So it shouldn’t be hard to draft one, develop one or sign one from USL, PDL or another team!
Also there are tons of them in Central America I think El Salvador proved that on saturday, Red Bulls already picked one up, they should look at the wings in Guatemala’s Municipal! Or at someone in Honduras and Costa Rica! If they can’t find one in the US that is young!
Edwin-
We get you don’t like Ching – drop it already.
Of course were it not for Ching blocking a ball off the line they would have been down 3-0 before Ching fed the ball to Hejduk who then got the assist on Altidor’s goal!
If that is the best Ching can do, block a ball from scoring, that\\\’s pretty sad!
yeah I would hope he can make a pass of 10 yards to a WIDE OPEN Hedjuk, and the mark on him was what 3 feet away, so he better be able to turn and score!
I think he is a good MLS player, but has no business in the national team, now I want to go back and look for that play you\\\’re talking about, I don\\\’t remember him playing Defense when we went down 2-0, we pretty much started playing better and were on their side of the half the rest of the game! What minute was it if you remember Dave?
I only wrote like 3 sentences on why Ching shouldn\\\’t be on the national team, trust me I have about 12 people who can give you perfect reason for it!
But I have a feeling he will play better if Altidore plays with Ching, it will benefit Ching, wouldn\\\’t be surprised to see Dempsey on the LM spot, and Donovan slide over to the RM, so Jozy and Ching play up top, expect Ching to get assist if this is the case.
As far as dropping the anti-Ching argument for the USMNT, I will drop it when Bob Bradley does it! Although I don\\\’t think it will happen anytime soon, he needs to find a way to get rid of Heath Pearce, Sacha and find a RB first!
Edwin-
I don’t know the ‘minute’ – but I believe it was when the MNT was down 1-0 in the 1st half.
My point about Jozy’s goal was that it wouldn’t have been scored but for Ching.
Like I said, if he can’t make a pass 10 yards to a wide open player when the closest guy to him is 3 feet away and also behind him, hell I don’t know what to think, he also shot right at the damn goalie when Jozy returned the favor and actually held the ball with a man on his back, layed it off to Ching and what did Ching do? Shot it right at the goalie, no change of direction, hell he could of blooped it to the right and I think Dempsey was waiting for it on the far post!
Ching has been overrated for a while, and the only time he scored was twice against Barbados of all people, and once against T&T and Cuba! Not one single road goal!
Jozy has done the whole holding the ball up at the same rate if not better than Ching has in the last two games, what he did on Saturday, Altidore did it against Mexico completely cold in the 9 minutes of play he got and with Salcido tackling him from behind, even earned him a yellow.
Saturday he did an even better play with the lay off and Ching couldn’t capitalize!
I think Bob will stick with Ching, I have no idea why, but he needs to start Jozy, stick Landon on the right wing since he insist on disappearing when playing the withdrawn forward role!
Could somebody PLEASE tell channel 11 to remove those totally distracting sidebars from the screen. It’s the ugliest and most distracting thing I’ve ever seen.
