The Houston Dynamo defeated FC Dallas on an entertaining night of soccer at BBVA Compass Stadium.
The nationally televised match showed off the new facility and the Dynamo and FC Dallas provided an entertaining match with the Orange ultimately coming out on top. This was a great night for soccer !!
Now let me clarify that this was far from a perfect performance from the Dynamo who had difficulty with the pace and movement of wide midfielders Jackson and Fabian Castillo who truly unbalanced them.
Yes it was entertaining from the perspective of being up and down and open.
But far from the perfect performance from the Dynamo and one wonders how this would have played out if not for the irresponsible red card from Jair Benetiz.
How much longer can you rely on a player like this who repeatedly lets his teammates down.
That is a problem for Schellas Hyndmann.
THREE MINUTES IN: That is all it took for the Dynamo to get the game’s opening goal from Will Bruin.
FC DALLAS 4-5-1
Schellas Hyndmann was dealing with huge injury issues. Missing were Ugo Ihemulu, George John, Brek Shea, David Ferriera, Blas Perez and set up his team to attack through wide men Fabian Castillo and Jackson.
Jackson had an outstanding game and proved to be a handful tying the game in the 59th minute at 1-1.
GAME CHANGING MOMENT
Jair Benetiz lost his head in a moment of self inflicted lack of composure in the 63rd minute.
This came only four minutes after they had tied the score. After his ejection the Dynamo took control of the match with the man advantage but up to that point struggled to control the game beginning in midfield.
The back four has not had a game this year with as much breaking down in front of them and it led to some uncomfortable moments and poorly aligned back four.
MOFFAT GAME WINNER
Adam Moffat off a corner found himself with time collecting the ball in the penalty area and with bodies in front of him made a great decision to rifle his finish high into the upper corner for his first of the year past a maze of bodies.

The Good: 3 points. Forwards that looked engaged and dangerous. The 6:30 start time.
The Bad: A defense that lost focus repeatedly and looked like they were going to let Dallas win or tie. This should not happen with the 5 potential starting defenders we have… 3 of which are on their national teams. Cory was repeatedly burnt and lost his man. Taylor looked oddly out of the game for stretches. Geoff was dangerously close to being caught in possession early.
The Ugly: The midfield… Yes I know Dallas had 5 in the midfield, but we couldn’t do crap. Moffet had a wonderful goal, but that doesn’t erase the fact that Dallas a looked much more dangerous in the midfield than we did.
Here is a thought exercise for you… We barely eeked out 3 points up a man for 25 minutes with the help of a lucky goal in the first 3 minutes. What would have been the result had the red fog not descended AND Dallas had a full starting lineup on the field? My answer… We would not have seen 3 points and would have been lucky to see 1.
3 much needed points. We now need to keep it going no matter what. Hopefully Carr isnt out too long.Last night was definitely not Corey’s night. I liked what Bruin brought to the table all night threatening the goal with great shots. I’m realistic about this result in that Dallas was not anywhere near 100% due to injury, but if if this puts some confidence into Houston’s mind then so be it. We need a good streak of wins not just ties to start working our way up the table.
To quote Smokey Robinson, I second that emotion. Don’t think this was a great night OF soccer – bad line and midfield play were suspect throughout. And am backing Tom – had Dallas’s regulars been on the field, Dynamo would have probably lost this game. Again, Kandji, he’s a one trick pony. Boy’s got to learn to pass the ball.
Glenn,
Explain to me how Corey Ashe plays more minutes than Andre Hainault? Hainault is a better defender and scores more goals. Corey Ashe has been dreadful all season and it is not getting any better. It reminds me of Dom sticking with Wade Barrett for way too long and we all remember what Dane Richards did to him. Corey’s defending last night was poor, and he was beaten by faster, more sklled players. He got caught sticking out a leg last night with some great bullfighting defending on their goal, and his ‘Foul Throw” last night almost led to the equalizer late. Who in their right mind commits a foul throw in his own defending third in the last 10 minutes of a match.? That right there would be my signal to put him on the bench for a good long time and play Hainault, Boswell, Cameron and Taylor in the back.
Colin Clark is horrible and I think we need to cut our losses with him. I hope that when Boneik comes in, we are done with him and I never had to see him again. I would rather have Brian Mullan on the right wing every day of the week and twice on Sundays compared to him.
Last night was a fortunate result for us. Benitez seeing red was a moment of stupidity that cost Dallas a point and maybe 3. Hopefully Carr is not out too long but I think that with Boniek, we will see less of him.
Enough of that….on to more important things….Chelsea has confirmed Roberto Di Mateo will stay in charge of Chelsea, which is a good thing. We have confirmed the signing of Eden Hazard and are close on Hulk and Gregory Van Der Wiel. Things starting to look good for the Blues as we prepare to retain our European Championship! Up the Blues!
Glen. i would like to get your thoughts on this. When Boniek comes and plays wont his one v one ability create more chances for others? he will occupy defenders drawing them off of others especially when he sucks them in and dishes off to Brad Davis who can be free to snipe at goal.
also if he works his way to the middle he can dish as well. with his talents on the right wing wouldnt it benefit Dom to allow the fied to be widened giving both Brad and Boniek more space with which to terrorize the opposition?
Glen im sorry . should have said WIDEN THE FIELD.

Most of the comments are dead on! Ashe was horrible. he needs to ride the bench and draw splinters….The back line was just as bad. This is the second game in a row that I saw Cameron play out of position. He may be trying to do too much. Ching was adequate but needs to come off the bench to be fresher and more affective. Why didn’t Hainault play? Colin Clark just does not have it any longer……He used to be able to beat his man off the dribble, now he simply does not! He is serviceable and nothing more. Bruin is getting better. He needs the ball more. Camargo when he came on looked good. He distributed the ball better than he has recently. He was more thoughtful and consistent with his passes. I hope Garcia is the answer on the right side. I think it is time to start Warren C. and take our chances. FC Dallas was missing key players and they may have won if Benitez did not get a red card. We are still not clicking. More tinkering needs to be done. I really hope Carr is not hurt long time. I am happy that they won but it was a little ugly. Moffat’s lazer was a thing of beauty. If he can come on, that will help emmensely. go Orange!
IT was not pretty but it was three points. We were out played at our stadium. I agree with Tom if Dallas had everybody it would have been different.
Moffat also saved the match in the last few minutes.
With Carr out for awhile it looks likes the Dynamo will have to look for another outside midfielder.
Lets see we do not resign Cruz and have to sign two midfielders to replace him. Guess we got money to burn. If we do give Mofatt a raise.
Lets circle the wagons and play hard for 90 min the next match
I’m glad we won but Houston looked bad and Dallas looked threatening. Dallas shouldv’e had a couple more goals but we got lucky. Our defense was lacking. Jermain Taylor is so often, left alone to carry the ball but he looks timid to carry it forward. Other teams are scared of him, you can see the way in that they give him so much space, he needs to be more assertive. Why isn’t Andre Hainnault playing? He’s an incredible defender, why is he on the bench? It defiitely was not Corey’s night this game. I think his engagement/marriage is toying with his mental state, women tend to do that. I like Mac Kandj, it’s about time we have someone who’s not scared to take on players 1v1 but someone has to give him support. When Mac is about to take on players, our guys need to start making runs so he has an outlet to pass to. I love Ching, I don’t care how many shots he flubs, he deserves to retire with the Dynamo for all of his past efforts. Bruin looked great, Carr is looking good too (hopefully his injury isn’t severe), I loved it when he threw down his helmet. Forwards win games and Goalies save games and Tally Hall saved this game and we stole 3 points at home.
in response to Coach II,
Corey was on the field because Andrew is a slower player. Andrew is better in the air, stronger in the tackle, but he is not left footed either.
Corey was beaten several times in the first half but so was Taylor, Geoff, and Boswell. Corey played better defense in the second half and made good runs forward with some good crosses throughout the game.
The defense struggled because they can’t man mark when extremely quick opposing players are overlapping like crazy all over the field. Midfielders must follow the opponents players flooding in overlapping runs – Davis, Clarke, Moffat, and Carr failed to do this at times.
Give some credit to FCD players / game plan and some blame on our lack of speed in Boswell, Moffat and Clarke, and Davis.
another thing…
Taylor got beat several times. Hinault would replace him on that side if you feel like he should be on the field.
Briun is our best forwrad right now. I thought Watson played well as attacking mid.
However, we need Camargo to step it up and Boniek to take over the right half position.
Ching just needs to score, if not – let Big Mac start and bring in Ching as super sub.
Rant over.
