Play manager for a minute and tell me who would be your first choice striker if you were putting a team together? Here are a few to get you started…….
WAYNE ROONEY-Manchester United- power, strength skill personified. He is capable of coming back into midfield and playmaking not to mention strike free kicks. His powerful runs to get in the box are awe inspiring.
DIDIER DROGBA -Chelsea- another in the proto-type like Rooney with the power and strength of a modern day striker….can’t be contained.
LIONEL MESSI-Barcelona- Sublime skill, quick in thought and explosive over a few yards not to mention an excellent finisher…..
CRISTIANO RONALDO-Real Madrid- clearly coming off a great weekend where he was the dominant player for Real….
Who else do you add to this list? Luis Fabiano? Pato? Jermain DeFoe? Emmanuel Adebayor?
ONSTAD SPEAKS OUT ON PLAYERS ASSOCIATION AND MLS CBA NEGOTIATIONS
“In the last 8 months there has been no movement at all. The last offer we put on the table has not even been remotely addressed. Right now, negotiations are in a bad place. We’re far apart.” Dynamo goalkeeper and Players Union Rep.

Definately Rooney…also Zlatan Ibrahimovic should be on wish list.
Have you geard anything about Holden’s chance of getting playing time? I saw that he was in the 18 for an FA Cup match a week or two ago so I figured he recovered from his thigh injury. Then he hasn’t been in the 18 for the last 2 premier league matches. Was wondering if it was due to injury,, lack of fitness or what.
Can you find out if there is any truth to this:
http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/sports/MLS-trials
No question, Didier Drogba. When he is on his game, there is no better player in the world. He has all the tools, while the rest of the best strikers in the world have most of the tools.
Size–Drogba, Adebayor, Ibrahimovic
Speed–Drogba, Rooney, Messi, Ronaldo
Strength–Drogba, Rooney, Ibrahimovic
First Touch–Drogba, Rooney, Messi, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic
Ability to score in air–Drogba, Rooney, Ibrahimovic (the others do not do it consistently)
Ability to strike the ball–Drogba, Rooney, Messi, Ronaldo
When you add all of those qualities up, you get the perfect striker, and that is what Drogba is, when he wants to be. I am actually reading his autobiography right now and it is a really good read. I would definitely recommend that book to anyone.
Lionel Messi has actually produced a few great goals in the air.
Not because of size and strength because of movement.
All can hit free kicks as well. IN fact Drogba has impressed me in this area this year more than ever with Chelsea.
Glenn – Labor problem sucking the life and anticipation out of upcoming MLS season.
Instead of focusing on new Philly team, 2 new soccer specific stadiums, MLSer’s vieing for World cup rosters, etc. We wonder if season will start? or if league will fold up it’s tent altogether?
Damn shame, any inroads made in pro soccer in America over last dozen years, now in jeopardy.
I agree with the sentiments of William; it is highly unfortunate that the
MLS is undergoing such baloney. Didn’t Onstad say a couple of weeks
ago things were improving? What a dang liar; he should run for office!
Oh soccer gods please let there be a MLS season!!!!!!!!
Organization has not mentioned anything concerning article from Jamaica but I will have answers on the radio show tonight.
The more I think about the more people are way off on the ability of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the air. Of course both are serviced differentl and they are different player but both are dangerous in the air.
In fact Ronaldo scored some fantastic aerial goals for United last year by coming into the box from wide.
You have to consider how their teams look to play them the ball.
Much different than Rooney and Drogba.
As much respect as I have for Coach H, bless his Chelsea Blue heart, I have to go with Cristiano Ronaldo among this group, with Drogba running a close second. It’s hard to choose Messi because, as wonderful a player as he is, they allow so much space in La Liga, and after you get past the two two teams the quality seriously drops off, that it’s hard to judge just how good he is. What has he ever done in Champions League play compared to what he can put together when so few defenders even breathe on him in La Liga?
I love to watch Messi play, and I am a huge Barca fan and definitely NOT a Madridista, but I think that Ronaldo is someone I would rather build a team around.
That being said, Rooney has really shown his mettle this year, stepping up in Ronaldo’s absence for the Mancunians. And every single thing that Coach H said about Drogba is right on the money, especially that one little part about him being the perfect striker “when he wants to be.”
With Ronaldo, there just never is an off switch. He seems to be an arrogant, egotistical player, but he is completely committed to winning the game, any game. His only drawback is that he wants to be THE player to win the game, not anyone else. That’s fine as long as he IS that guy, and all-so-frequently, he definitely has been. But right now, the fact that he does not take games or indeed very many minutes in games, as compared to Drogba, and the fact that he is faster than Rooney and more able to deal with physical challenges than Messi puts him in the lead here.
Emmanual Adebayor is not one of the top 20 strikers in the world. I would take at least 10 strikers from the EPL alone over him.
Whom would they be Travis?
Mr. Glenn, thanks for being out at the rally. I wish the Ball n’ Chain could make out to meet you and President Luck but our bosses are real slave-drivers!!!
Say a howdy to Pat for us !!!
Martek, you seriously want to criticize the quality of play in La Liga compared to EPL dominance of the big 4? Which up until the Mourinho/Abramovich era was more of a top 3 or 2 with Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool, although when was the last time Liverpool won the league title?
Chelsea won what 2, not sure if they were in row but I think they were. Arsenal won what 2 in 3 years?
So 3 teams have won like 9 or 10 titles the last decade? That’s not going to change this year, Chelsea or Man Utd will win, although I hope Arsenal wins it.
I think pretty much every European big league La Liga, Serie A, EPL, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 they all have 2 or 3 dominant teams that take all the titles!
Italy was once an AC Milan & Juventus monopoly, but now Inter has leveled the playing field and might join the 2 star in the uniform club soon!
I’ll give you this much, Man City is pushing the envelope, I expect them to be in the top 5 or better this year, and next season they SHOULD be in top 3 or 4 the whole season, they are a few strikes away from it right now! Tottenham is the most impressive, great signings, great chemistry not quite has put it together losing some dumb games that could of allowed them to stay with ManUtd, Chelsea and Arsenal but other than that, who else makes noise? Fulham, when healthy and not consistantly enough to get to the Europa Semis, Aston Villa? Lets see how they do 2 years in a row? Birmingham was impressive but now that the other Europa League level teams are coming back up they will end up in say 10th-12th, not bad for a club’s 1st year in the Prem after earning promotion from Championship.
But look at teams after that, Sunderland, Blakcburn, Bolton, Wigan, Bolton, Portsmouth, Hull City.
Not very impressive, only reason West Ham is still around is because Carlos Tevez went on a tear and they got away with having him for a good price!
West Ham might resurface underl Zola but lets be honest even this year when 3 or 4 teams improved their form, the bottom half if not very impressive, thus why they have struggled vs MLS All Star teams.
Stoke City I almost forgot, would love to see them vs say Villareal or Atletico Madrid or even say Malaga.
I recall Messi scoring at will in the last TWO, Champions League tournaments, when Eto and Ronaldinho were joining him I recall him scoring about 4 r 5 goals with what 17 years and a mighty 1 year of 1st team experience?
Also when it counted the most I also recall Messi scoring THRU THE AIR, against what is considered by some as the best Center Back pairing and one of the top 3 or 5 keepers in the world to seal the win vs the almighty Manchester Utd, who’s dominated EPL for what almost 4 years now?
Where was the lack of aerial skill there? I recall him putting the ball in an unrecheable top corner to freeze Van der Sar, it looked not as smooth because he is “The Atomic Flea” and well he has to work that much harder to jump, and well he’s no Nate Robinson so it was a bit of a struggle!
Glenn not to team up with Travis on you, but I have to agree!
Adebayor while I like, and hope he teams up with Tevez to tear up the EPL and challenge not only the other Manchester team but the other bigs of the EPL. I don’t even think he’s a top 10 in England, not the last 2 years at least.
As to who would be ahead of him, well you already mentioned 4.
I would add Tevez, Villa, Forlan, Torres, Milito, Eto’o, Luis Fabiano although he can’t stay healthy but I think still has similar goals this year.
Ibra’s about the same since his goal tally’s gone down, but I have a feeling he’ll have more goals than he had last year overall. I just hope he gets to the magic 20, I believe he had about that many in Serie A and well he can be our 2nd scorer since guys like Pedro & Keita scored a lot this year.
And the most underrated forward as of right now, maybe because the guy who plays for his enemy and my favorite team Barcelona, Lionel Messi, takes all the spotlight. But let me tell you, I expect Gonzalo Higuain to come out even more this summer! The guy is the best Madrid player for the last 3 seasons and is overshadowing Ronaldo with his elbow throwing and stupid 2nd yellow for celebrating and takin off his jersey.
Then you got players who maybe if they have the right situation might eclipse Adebayor as well. Aguero, Benzema, Owen, Mario Gomez can all be just as good or better. Some of those are scoring much more and just don’t play in as prestigous league but I’ll take Bayern’s Gomez & Atletico’s Aguero over him right now because of the upside.
Even in EPL, guys like Saha, Defoe, Van Persie (I know I know he’s hurt but was tearing it up and when healthy he’s money).
I hope guys like Robben and Sjneider keep impressing.
But I almost forgot, where does Ronaldinho fit in all this Glenn? I know he’s been up and down after his hat-trick resurgance, but he’s been more consistantly good than idle or bad. I think the bar was so high for him though that it’s a lose lose?
10 EPL strikers that I’d rather have than Adebayor…
Rooney, Drogba, Torres, Van Persie, Tevez, Agbonlahor, Defoe, Anelka, Bent, Berbatov.
Berbatov is trash! Not really sure how this guy and an extra midfielder like Sung get PT time over Michael Owen, didn’t he come in at the last minute to save the day in the 2nd game of the EPL season? He needs to start getting at least 25-35 minutes a game if he doesn’t should leave Man Utd.
I’ll take all of those Travis but maybe not Berbatov, Bent and Agbolahor. I think Saha has to be up there despite the fact that I think he missed at least 2 or 3 goals vs Chelsea. What about guys being harly used like Babel?
I have to say Zamora is doing pretty good! I hope Aston Villa can find a great playmaker or Striker to help them stay in the Europa/4th CL spot battle! Brad Guzan should take over soon, I hope?
Yeah… Edwin I thought about Saha instead of Berbatov.
That being said… Adebayor had a big year when he was getting unbelievable service from Arsenal two years ago. Watching most of his games that season he would miss two sitters for every one that he converted. Last season (after receiving a big raise) he was not nearly as productive. Despite his fast start at Man City, he has majorly leveled off and doesn’t belong in the class of elite strikers at this point, IMHO.
I would take Agbonlahor 100x over Adebayor.
Agreed, he could though! I am going to give him a bit of a break for now since the guy went thru hell in the CAF!
But maybe when he plays next to Tevez consistantly and they start to develop some chemistry under Mancini he’ll start scoring more. I would take him in MLS in heartbeat though! LOL Wouldn’t you like him instead of Landin? LOL
Sorry Luis, bad joke I do hope you make it, but I think you don’t warrant a DP slot at your best because the Dyanamo could of gone after someone like Bravo or Blanco if they wanted to push the Mexican potential draw side of a DP. Or they could get someone else who actually warrants a DP slot, but without a stadium is hard! I mean who wants to play on the sand pit that Robertson was last season? I’m talking about the Henry’s, Shevchenko, Ronaldos and Rauls of the world that have always been rumored as potential DP’s
I don’t know about you but, Kei Kamara might of had a point with his displeasure regarding the DP thing. Granted there’s an almost certain chance to he addressed it wrong, or I might even go as far as thinking Dom was encouraged to pull the triger on Landin at a DP, but Kei makes him look pretty bad, and if he goes on to score 12+ goals, he’ll make Landin look bad and Dynamo FO& Kinnear even worst. Landin won’t score 20, even 15 goals so he’s no where near a DP type of productivity, fan wise or production LOL
A good list of strikers gentleman.
Highest Striker on my list:
Adrian Mutu!
Come on now, that is funny stuff there!
Hands down, Didier Drogba. Power, quickness, technique w/both feet, and the flat fear of God he puts on the opposition. Combine all that with the one intangible that NEVER gets mentioned, his defense, and you have the total package. Drogba often tracks back to the box and sometimes the end line, especially in big four and Champions League matches. No other striker in the world does that w/the possible exception of Wayne Rooney.
With apologies to Edwin, Messi is a close second only because for me personally, if I’m building a team to win at domestic and international levels, I want more power and size at the striker position. Messi more than makes up for his lack of size w/his immense skill but a healthy Didier Drogba is a monster.
And for the sake of discussion, I would take Carlton Cole over Adebayor six days to Sunday. Prior to his injury earlier this year, he was as productive as any striker in the league and with the midtable Hammers, he doesn’t have near the supporting cast as many of the other big name talismen.
