THIS WAS UGLY.
It was a nightmare last night for MLS as both the NE REVOLUTION and CHIVAS USA crashed out of the CONCACAF CHAMPIONS CUP respectively to JOE PUBLIC of Trinidad and TAURO FC of PANAMA. Not exactly the cream of Concacaf in opposition with all due respect. Now in fairness both NE and CHIVAS USA are beaten up injury wise and in the thick of MLS schedules. It must be considered but can’t be an excuse.
MLS now has to continue to move towards expanding the salary cap if it wants to continue to enter all tournaments that come their way. Rumor has the MLS salary cap potentially being doubled in the near future with the Players Union agreement with MLS coming due.
If you watched New England you saw manager STEVE NICOL trot out a makeshift lineup that wasn’t up to it.
Poor individual performances were costly and MATT REIS had a rough night in goal where he has to be called out. Yes it was a rarity to see REIS struggle on 3 of the 4 JOE PUBLIC goals. Go back to Saturday against LA and REIS did not look as comfortable either. Since coming off injured in San Jose three weeks ago he has looked tentative by his standards.
NE dealing with all these games is a new challenge for them and something they have never gone through.
They resume play in MLS at COLUMBUS this SATURDAY on HDNET.
Did you see the Concacaf games last night and what are your thoughts?

Sorry Glenn, bad timing. I’m gonna be watching to hear for myself what Palin is like during her RNC convention speech. Not sure I’d even go to see the Wizards anyway in 96 degree heat Sunday. I agree with the need to at least double the salary cap, but club owners at teams like KC and Colorado show me they have NO interest in raising the level of their clubs with money.

I have not had the opportunity to watch Chivas on the DVR yet, but I watched Joe Public run all over New England last night. Fitzpatrick Gregory Richardson looked a step ahead on everyone. His first goal was sweet, the second was quality too. The rest fall firmly on Reis. He was way out of position to make a reasonable attempt at a save on a couple of them. That truly was embarassing, not only to New England, but the Dynamo, D.C. United, and the rest of MLS. Luckily it happened early enough in the competition so it will soon be forgotten in the following rounds….

  3. brent says:

embarassing does not even describe it, I know both clubs are dealing with injuries but N.E. looked as if they were treating it like the U.S. open cup (don’t really care about it) chivas just is not that good with their depleted line-up. I am with you on the salary cap, needs to happen asap!!! Now let me pose the question to you Glen. Why is Houston being threatened by the league to move the team if it does not get a stadium deal done? As I have watching the N.E. games this year and in the past not only do they not have their own stadium (not sure if there is one in the works or not) but they have no support from the fans. In either MLS regular season games or CONCACAF tourney’s they do not even get close to the turnout the Dynamo recieve, so why is Houston being scrutinized and not N.E. at least we as fans show up and support our team weather it be in Robertson, Reliant, college station, and even south of the border you will see Dynamo fans at the games. I know we promised a stadium to the organization and they deserve it by all means, but I think MLS and Mr. Garber need to look at what is more important stadiums or a growing fan base (sorry more of a rant than question). Any thoughts?

  4. Glenn Davis says:

Yes, it was embarrassing but just more fodder for the increased salary cap and quality of player argument.
As for NE they play rent free (sort off as Robert Kraft owns the stadium, still has to pay to open it up etc.) but from what I am told by NE reps they are looking to find a new soccer specific stadium for the team in an area that is suitable. This shows they want to grow soccer and not let the sport fizzle out like it did at Arrowhead in KC. You could argue that was detrimental to the growth of soccer all the years in KC . You could argue that in other places like Colorado as well.
Stagnating teams set the sport back.

  5. Alton says:

Well said Brent. The dynamo have to be at least 2nd or 3rd in league attendance. Other teams deserve more scrutiny on this.

  6. pacman jones says:

ummm.. what happened? like JOE PUBLIC are you serious? and its not as if to say lucky goal or bad call by the ref but 4-0 in BOSTON.. thats bad.. and chivas usa is a joke to me well there roster is too limites for competition..
I HAVE A QUESTION THOUGH I REALLY DONT KNOW THE ANSWER IF GLEN ANYONE CAN ANSWER???? i know the U.S. national soccer team has never beat Mexico in Mexico.. but HAS AN MLS CLUB TEAM EVER BEATEN A MEXICAN CLUB TEAM IN MEXICO IN A OFFICIAL TOURNAMENT LIKE THIS..
