Dynamo advance to Open Cup semi-final/ U.S. vs. Honduras tonite / Will Owen produce at Manchester United?

cam.jpg

On a water logged field in Charleston the Houston Dynamo defeated the Charleston Battery 4-0 behind two goals from Geoff Cameron.
Normally playing as a center back, Cameron was given a more attack oriented midfield role from manager Dominic Kinnear and responded.
Here is the scoring summary: 16th Cameron
47th Boswell
52nd Oduro
73rd Cameron
The Dynamo will take on Seattle Sounders FC in the semi-finals in Seattle later in the month in Tuwila, WA at the Starfire Complex.
Former Strake Jesuit high school captain Nelson Akwari played for Charleston.
The Dynamo will head to Seattle later this week to take on Sounders in an MLS game this Saturday at 3pm Pacific time. The game will air on KHOU 11.2.
The Dynamo will be without a slew of players including central defenders Bobby Boswell and Geoff Cameron who will both miss the game due to suspension.
Stuart Holden, Brian Ching and Andrew Hainault are all involved in the Gold Cup.
Seattle will be missing Brad Evans and Tyrone Marshall also to the Gold Cup.

U.S. HONDURAS tonite
The competition should take a step up tonite as the U.S. takes on Honduras tonite at RFK Stadium in the nation’s capital.
The game will be broadcasted on FSC.
Stuart Holden should get another run in midfield after producing a goal against Grenada in a 4-0 U.S. win….After the U.S. defeated Spain and lost in the final of the Confederations Cup to Brazil do you find it hard to get excited about the Gold Cup?

MICHAEL OWEN AND MAN U

So Red Devil fans what do you think of this shock signing?
And what do you think of the stable of strikers Sir Alex has assembled?
Will Dimitar Berbatov take his game to the level he produced at Spurs? Will Wayne Rooney relish playing as a central striker and having some positional consistency?
Can Luis Antonio Valencia live up to it at a big club?
Owen injury fears are always first and foremost on the minds of fans these days but he did pass the physical.
Can and will the former Liverpool star produce for United?

THANKS TO HBU
My gratitude to Houston Baptist University soccer campers and coach Steve Jones for having me out last night to address the campers after a long day on the fields.
HBU remarkably is one of only two NCAA division 1 mens soccer programs in the state of Texas.

Get your World Football Challenge (Chelsea vs. Club America) and Gold Cup tickets (Mexico vs. Panama) this Thursday at FIESTA TICKETMASTER where you can save!
The Dynamo are back in town until they play NE at the end of the month but you better start thinking Blanco and Beckham….Their visits are just around the corner.

DonJuego made a great point on the past blog post…Winning the Concachampions does not only give you 36 grand but a place in the Club World Cup in which even if you lose in the first round you make a min. of 1 million dollars and every year the prize money seems to be growing larger! So yeah ConcaChampions is worth the most! I don’t mean to correct but the title of your post Glenn, states Dynamo advance to Final now I love reading those words but not yet! What a game by a young Dynamo side yesterday Dom really added what Dynamo had been missing…depth! Maybe with that kind of depth the Dynamo may get to have the honor of losing to Pachuca four times, twice in the group stages of the CCL and another two times in the finals! Can’t wait for that Pachuca game! Good luck to the bars and stripes today, even though Honduras isn’t playing that well…

It is always fun to read Leo’s comments. It was fun watching the young boys take Charleston apart last night and I hope they do as well in the SEMI’s. Seeing Geoff go forward was fun. Bet he liked it too.
I think that even with a weakened side we should be able to deal with Honduras tonight, but there is a reason we play the game. Paper is just that. On any given day ect…..
One of the things I’ve come to worry about is being able to keep Dom. The world is starting to take notice of his talent. Given what he has done in the MLS imagine what he might pull of with a real budget. I’m sure others are thinking that too. Some day soon we’ll have to start paying these guys.

  3. Summa says:

Regarding the Gold Cup; maybe the timing is a little off comming just right after the Confed tourney and the unexpected results we are still soaking in is hurting the interest. However, this is the best opportunity to actually see the talent pool in competitive games versus in a “friendly” plus, MLS may scout the next Ricketts or Richards here. Would of liked to change back to invite a few non CONCACAF teams in like a Colombia, a Holland or a Nigeria into the tourney especialy the ones that don’t involve qualification into the next Confed Cup.

  5. Kirk says:

Andy ideas on the anticipated starting 11 for the Dynamo on Saturday? With Cameron and Boswell out, and Weibel iffy it could be interesting.

    Might we see a 3-5-2

    onstadt

    Mullan——James——–Chablala

    Clark

    Cruz—-Hayden—-Davis——-Ashe

    Kamara——Oduro

If Weibel can go I am guessing he’ll be in the middle with James and Dom would go with 4 mid fielders. Its quite a puzzle, I’m glad I dont have to make the call. I’m curriuous what everyone else thinks.

I find it mind boggling that a Texas soccer player that wants to play division I ball has only 2 choices in the state of Texas – HBU and SMU. This is very troubling.

Why is it that the large universities in Texas insist on denying our state’s soccer players the opportunity to play? Surely they cannot hide behind Title IX. Somehow colleges all over the country are capable of running soccer programs while Texas, A&M, Tech, Baylor, TCU, U of H, seem to find it impossible. Particularly Texas and Texas A&M – there is no excuse. What is different about the Texas schools that colleges with major athletic programs outside the state of Texas find the funds to field a division I program? Penn State, Ohio State, UCLA, Maryland, West Va, Virginia, Oregon State, Washington, Stanford, Cal, Michigan State, NCarolina, etc….

Sorry to vent, but I was shocked when I read that HBU was one of two D-I programs. I played D-I men’s soccer at TCU in the late 80’s, early 90’s. Sadly, the men’s program no longer exists.

  7. JAG says:

Sorry for the dumb question, but how does one get channel KHOU 11.2? Do you have to have Comcast as with Directv I can’t find it?

  8. Offebacher says:

Congrats on the new Show Glenn.

Great result against the Battery last night, probably a bit higher than most people would have thought. The value of a deep team, by MLS Standards, can not be underestimated. Now against Seattle in the Semi Final, could it be that we actually make a run at this thing? Should the Dynamo actually care? I say Yes and Yes, the Open Cup Trophy is now 2 Wins away and even though most people put more stock into the MLS Season this is an opportunity that should be taken.

The Game in Seattle this weekend could be interesting given the amount of starters/backups out of the lineups. Personally would be happy with a tie, but we will see.

Pumped up about going to Reliant tomorrow, should be a great atmosphere (at least for the second game) and will be watching if El Tri will improve on their performance from the opening game.

  9. The Sarge says:

#1- Great win for the Dynamo and personal victory for Cameron. A 4-0 away is definatly a booster shot to the ego.
#2- The Sounders game (for better or worse) will help to expose the depth and level of play the Dynamo contain.
#3- I have had many players into my store that could not believe that there are only 2 Div 1 programs in TX. One explanation is that TX is still NFL country so the college progams cater to the American Football crowds as this is there tried and true base of local fan support. But, times they are a changing and I do not think it will be to much longer before your top TX colleges offer a Div 1 program. One customer pointed out that if U of H started a Div 1 mens program they could (in theory) clean house due to the ammount of international tallent that already goes to U of H. Not to mention it would increase the ammount of students wanting to be a part of said Div 1 team.
    – Well those are just a few thoughts for now.

  10. Rex says:

@Kirk. It is a quite a puzzle. From my count we will have 14 players available TOTAL(excluding reserve GKs) for the game
    I see it like this:

    onstadt

    Mulrooney——James——–Chablala

    —-Clark–Ustruck–

    Mullan—————-Ashe
    ——-Davis—

    Kamara——Oduro

I Akinbyi and Cruz will definitely by subbed in fairly early.

  11. Kirk says:

I forgot about Mulrooney, not sure how I could do that. I thought Hayden played more of a defensive role historically, and I thought Ustruck was on Loan to Austin. I know he played for Houston this week in Open cup, but I’m not sure how the loan rules work.
One things for sure. It is going to be interesting. If Houston can get a result with this many guys out it really bodes well for the rest of the year.
