Ching: Proudest moment of my life, hearing fans sing national anthem at the World Cup

Dynamo striker Brian Ching is hopeful of making the final 23 man roster for the United States that will go to this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.
The U.S. It will ultimately come down to his fitness and the strength of his hamstring and the ability to perform. Ching helped the U.S. qualify for the World Cup and is a true target type forward. Here is a recent interview I did with Brian:

GD: When did you first learn about the World Cup and what it was?

Brian Ching: I first learned about the World Cup watching it on tv. As you know, I was more interested in surfing. I don’t really know when I started to pay attention but I guess it was when Argentina and Germany were in the final. That’s my first memory.

GD: How much of the World Cup is about national pride?

Brian Ching: It’s the ultimate achievement in soccer to play in a World Cup in front of your entire country.

GD: What goes through your mind when the national anthem is playing?

Brian Ching: One of the most memorable moments was on the field before we played Italy in the World Cup in 2006. Hearing the national anthem sung by all the fans and us players was the proudest moment of my life. I think about our country and how hard I worked to get to that point in my life.

Oh my lord … Glen …. those moments in Germany in 2006. I was at all three USMNT. Those moments when the stadia in Gelsenskirchen, Kaiserslautern and Nuremburg were full of our voices as US supporters sang our Nations’ anthem for the world. Those moments are burned into my memory and, for me as well, are some of the proudest moments of my life.

The emotional intensity of those moments were totally unexpected.

Every person should experience this. It is not reserved just for the players. That moment of your national anthem before the world at a World Cup is unlike any other experience you can have.

Certainly, for a player it is an even richer experience given the years, the lifetime, of hard work and dedication to mold yourself into one of the 23 best players of your country. However it was still a unique, special and deeply emotional and proud experience for little ol me, your average smoe fan.

Expected nothing less from Ching. One of the real class guys in MLS. Hope he makes it and has great WC.
Switching gears, see where Guillermo Barros Schelotto suspended for Thurs. game vs. NYRB.
Shame, the guy is chopped and hacked each and every game. Espically by teams like Chivas USA that don’t have the talent to match up vs. Crew, so they take the easy approach and cut off the engine (Schelotto), with whatever it takes.
If this was glamour boy Beck’s getting roughed up every game, you can bet Garber would be involved and send out message loud and clear to cease.

  3. Glenn Davis says:

Powerful words from Brian! Like I have always said, 11 hard working players will not put people in the seats. Then again that approach is taken with talent around he world, the assets must be protected fairly.

  4. margo says:

Brian is an excellent example of US pride when he travels abroad. But I would really like to see every USMNT player with hand on heart and singing our national anthem when the time comes. In past games some of them just stand there and don’t even attempt to sing the anthem. If they don’t feel that its an honor to be there, then maybe they shouldn’t be there.

    Margo,
I think in this day and age of naturalized players representing other countries the nationalistic side doesn’t always come through to all players. For many it is just getting to the World Cup and if a Brazilian can’t do that with Brazil then the idea of naturalizing that players for say Russia becomes an option provided both sides are interested.

Glen, the players that I observed just standing there were American boys. I don’t expect the non-Americans to sing our anthem.

  8. John Eau Claire says:

    Best wishes, Brian.
I hope that the three of you, including Clark, will be on the final roster and play during the World Cup.
Although our chance is slim, but passing the first round wtll be quite an axhievement.
I hope that Coach Bradley won’t make the same mistake as his predecessor.
    Go, USA.
