* With Monday Night Football in town for the first time in a long time a couple of thoughts.
I am just dumb-founded as to why PLAXICO BURRESS needs a gun in New York City going into a nightclub?
Does he need protection? How does the nightclub let him in with the gun?
MLS needs to promote the fact that their players are not getting into the off-field troubles that others in the NFL and NBA are…
Oh, and please don’t tell me the simple arguement that it is because they get paid more. How about common sense?
ESPN is in town with “Mike and Mike” at the House of Blues (great venue for live music by the way) this morning promoting the Monday night football game on Espn. MLS Prime Time Thursday clearly is missing the tertiary support that a radio or tv show earlier in the week could provide to drawing awareness and interest to MLS PRIME TIME THURSDAY matches. MLS clubs also have a stake in this to get fans to games. Markets that can’t put people in the seats should be avoided. NE are you listening?
*Fans are encouraged to stay active with their support of the stadium by contacting city and county officials as this is expected to come to a head in December.

Glenn, I feel the stadium issue will be resolved. The City stands to lose too much if the Dynamo were to move to another local. The Dynamo gives the City of Houston prestige in a global sport that is making tremendous inroads in this country and especially in this City. No where could you find a more proven winner that is willing to put up the lion\’s share of money to build a new stadium. The City will benefit in increased taxes and the East End of downtown will come alive with new venues and interest. It is a win/win situation that I feel will be realized to everybody\’s satisfaction soon.
I like everyone else is monitoring this situation and doing what we can to help the Orange. I am also looking forward to the draft and changes that I know will happen to this team. I still feel a top notch Mexican player that can pass and keep the flow of the game moving will do wonders for this team. Especially with a new stadium. These and other changes I expect to occur sometime in the next few months.
Would that I share your optimism Manny. This city has played games for years with AEG over getting this stadium deal done. Now with an increasing tight economy and a hurricane clean-up to fund, I see Garcia, White, and Lee not being competent enough to see the value of tens of millions of dollars from an outside investor into city development, jobs, and tax revenues. I am hopeful that other groups from the area will see this opportunity and keep them here locally. We will just have to make the drive to that site. If our coty leaders couldn’t get this done during “good days” doesn’t bode well for the future.
Manny,
I hope that you are right about the stadium. You make thoughtful, sound arguments. And I think that we’re open to using our DP on a Mexican player (assuming he fits into the team’s scheme) but his nationality isn’t the most important part. The player bringing success is most important. But is there anyone from the Mexican League that you have in mind? I would like to see either someone up front to complement Brian and Kei (we need another body up there) or somebody with some speed to anchor our defense. And once we find that person, how do we convince him to come to MLS while keeping our team unity in the locker room?
I don’t have anything on the stadium issue..the more I think about it the more I get depressed…I do keep hope it gets done as the benefits would be tremendous for our local economy…
On the DP issue, I once had a lengthy chat with someone who claims worked with the Dynamo staff (coaches) the first year they were here in Houston, and this person was very convincing with his assertions of Dom’s “perception” of mexican talent…I really don’t want to believe it but I’ve heard it from other sources as well…
I feel the same way I don’t care if a “Mexican” player comes as a DP or not…as long as he helps the team I really don’t care where he’s from…
But the comments just kept coming from all over the place…I even heard some academy players (of hispanic descent) were very dissapointed at the fact that their kids’ talents were not being taken seriously…
I don’t know…Im no scout, coach or trainer…but one thing I do tell you…I have seen lots of amateur players in the Houston Area that deserve a look….
Heck I’ve always said this…I have seen way better goalkeepers at Houston amateur leagues than Tony Caig…(nothing against him personall but he shouldn’t be our backup..)
I just hope that none of those things I heard are true…and really hope this team grows here in Houston and one day maybe even have a nice academy/university like the one in Pachuca…
We can only dream..
sorry I meant Academy players’ parents…
Tight economy? Read: Government stimulus package.
Take a hint from the Romans…bread and circuses to keep the masses happy in the bad times.
Maybe the county commissioners can go to the Fed well to pick up a bucket of stimulus money. I’d rather see it spent on a worthwhile infrastructure project like this that creates jobs short and long-term, than see the hogs on Wall Street feeding at the trough anymore.
I’m really hoping that our city and our media go all out when Sounders FC opens up next year’s Thursday Night Prime Time.
I’m with you Glenn, it needs to be developed into “destination TV” where every MLS fan watches, not just from the cities involved.
That might only get us to 1M viewers, but that would be a four fold increase.
