Adventures in Concacaf…the game nobody saw….Bad night for MLS as Columbus and DC United also fall

panama.jpg

Did this game really take place.
The road can be a crazy place and that is what it was in Panama last night apparently for the Houston Dynamo.
I didn’t see it so can only record second had thoughts but here are the facts:

Dynamo 1 (69th Kamara apparently off an Arabe Unido defender, Kamara from the top of the 18 yard box)
Arabe Unido 1 (stoppage time of second half, Orlando Rodriguez)

The Dynamo started Tally Hall in goal, 19 year old Danny Cruz, John Michael Hayden which reflects opportunity for those players and an overall plan to rest others ahead of a trip to Colorado and Commerce City to take on the Rapids this Sunday.

The game featured 5 players ejected, 13 cards overall issued, stadium lighting that failed. The Dynamo almost had their first road win in Concacaf on a bizarre night.
You can catch the replay tonite on Fox Soccer Channel at 7 cst.

That will do it for this version of “Adventures in Concacaf”.

On an additional note the Dynamo have to be pleased to see Real Salt Lake thrash Chivas USA 4-0 last night in Sandy, Utah.

It was a poor night overall for MLS as Columbus making their first venture into Mexico was beaten 5-0 by Cruz Azul in Mexico City while DC United was defeated in the nations capital by Toluca. Two goals in the first 9 minutes have me wondering if the Crew were up for this game or just over-awed. In the end this are poor performances that shake the foundations of MLS to the Mexican fan. These results are crushing. Not to mention that Ramon Nunez had a goal and an assist on the first two goals.
You remember Ramon, he played for FC Dallas and could not fit in……This types of losses can not be swept under the carpet, they are damaging.

The wildest game I never did see. What a mockery Brizan made of things last night. Glad to get out of there with a point, no injuries requiring surgical intervention, and decent payday for a local electrician. What’s that? Dynamo disrupt electrical grid in Panama?

How about Blackpool sticking it to Wigan?

  2. Kirk says:

Look on the bright side. Holden , Ashe and Hainault get a full week of rest after playing Columbus. Dom is going to have to use more regular starters Vs. Pachuca on the 13th than he may have otherwise, it might be a blessing in disguise.

  3. MoisesV says:

What a horrible night for MLS!

I think the Mexican League has better quality football, but the 5-0s and the 3-1s we’re seeing right now are just shameful for the league…

the cap needs to be raised and the reserve system brought back.!!! now!!!

    no depth…

and then we’ll be w/o Holden, Ashe, Hainault (speed), and Landin (experience) against Pachuca at their home~!!!!

this could get ugly…let’s just hope for the best on the 16th

I hope all who see the “game” tonight will blog about just what their impressions are as to why so many cards and ejections, etc. I will not be able to see it so I am relying on you all! I was interested to see the line up and wish I could see them play. Let me know your thoughts everyone. I did not watch the Crew after 2-0 CA. Altitude? Nerves? The Crew is a better team than that and will show it the next time they play. What I saw of DC United- Toluca was fast paced and hard fought on both sides. They sort of fell apart the last few minutes and allowed those goals. Major Gripe!!! While I appreciate 790AM doing the radio (love to listen home and away) the station fades out at sunset for us (Humble/Kingwood). This is VERY frustrating adn We have let the station know. Any way to get around that without spending $$?

I blame reduced roster size & eliminating the reserve league. Not just for last nights results, but for an inconsistent level of play this year in mls. When guys get hurt or need to be rested the reserves that are called on need to be match ready, and the reserve leage helped with that. Loans to USL teams can keep help keep individuals sharp (to a degree – ie. Ustruck)but there is no way to gain an understanding of and develop chemistry with your team mates if you do not play with them in game situations. The salary cap is an issue, raising that lets you increase roster size without diluting your talent pool. Thankfully Dom is better than most at managing his bench. Kudos to Hayden, Ustruck and Cruz last night. sounds like they aquited themselves well. I hope Cameron finds his groove at center mid, its the oly position he has played so far that I don’t remember him making a significant impact…

  7. Brian in KT says:

Without seeing the game, or the calls on the cards, is there a chance for a team to appeal the cards for the CONCACAF Champions League? I seem to remember that UEFA does not allow the appeals in their Champions League.

I agree with the others. We need the reserves back to help depth. These reserve players would stand a better chance of making expansion rosters in the coming years.

All I have to say is *dances* Dynamo against PACHUCA without Holden…YAY!!!!!!!! Hopefully Pachuca does something worth a while and beats the living stuff out of Dynamo…but in other news…glad Our Clockwork Orange pull of at least a draw away…I mean under those conditions I’m surprised they didn’t lose…I know I may see a little weird because i just thrashed Dynamo and then rooted for them, but first I am a Pachuca fan then a Dynamo fanatico…:-)

  9. Leo says:

For all of those that like to watch Pachuca play….Pachuca v. Chivas an away match for Pachuca shown on Telemunda Saturday at 7pm…its in spanish but gonna be a good match…

  10. Coach H says:

AC Milan vs. Real Madrid and Inter Milan vs. Barcelona highlight the Champions League Group Stage Draw!

United drawn with CSKA Moscow, Betsikas and Wolfsburg in a very difficult group.

Chelsea get Porto, Atletico Madrid and Apoel of Cyprus. Chelsea should advance!

Liverpool with Fiorentina, Lyon, and Hungarian side Debe–who cares? Would pay money to see Liverpool crash out.

Interesting groups and interesting match ups to come!

  11. Michael says:

Wednesday night was disappointing television viewing for MLS in CONCACAF Champions League. FSN should have live broadcast the Dynamo instead of kissing up to the D.C. and Columbus television markets.

  12. Marco says:

Scrap the Champion’s League. It’s an embarrassment. The league is not ready for it. Maybe in 10 years.

  13. John in Austin says:

Isn’t Houston a bigger market than either of those?

  14. Leo says:

Way bigger!!!!! But Toluca and Cruz Azul attract more than Arabe Unido….

  15. dave in socal says:

Time for SUM to purchase the USL and set up a minor league system along the lines of baseball and ice hockey. Every year some unknown ice hockey player from the minors makes an impact in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. By purchasing USL and making it a feeder system to clubs such as the Dynamo a reserve league would not be necessary. Players could get called up and make an impact when fixture congestion happens to clubs such as the Dynamo or the Crew, when they play in a CCL or the US Open Cup.
Players that would get very little playing time with the parent club would be able to get minutes in the USL. Parent clubs such as the Dynamo would own the contracts of all players in the USL. Also, towns that do not have the interest in supporting a higher level club could support a USL club.
With SUM purchasing USL certain clubs need to shut down. The Puerto Rico Islanders, Bermuda, and all Canadian USL clubs would no longer exist. This is so that the USL could be a US only league. Thus, finally the USL could be what it truly is a second tier US league.

Pumas tonite people…seems like the affiliate, Pumas Morelos, is doing better than the first team. *tear* :(

  17. O4 says:

Garner should send Brizan 3 dozen roses and a bottle of Cristal. No one that just watched that debacle can ever complain about MLS officiating again. Brizan was in way over his head. If I were concacaf I would not let him on a YMCA field. Just atrocious…..

Good effort by the guys completely overshadowed by the ref

  18. carlos says:

I just saw the game on FSC and almost had a heart attack. The ref was as bad as I have ever seen in any setting, youth, amateur, pro, whatever. This guy was handing out yellows and reds like they were candy. He carded Corey and Hainault for slight incidental contact, Holden’s second yellow was not very clear. If he was talking to this guy at all I am sure he was carded for dissent. This was an atrocious display of officiating incompetence. He should not be allowed on a soccer field again. I bet he is buddies with the CONCACAF President, who happens to be from T and T. Jack, your boy was horrible!!!!!

I grew up in Panama and was impressed with the nice facility that DAU was playing in. ANAPROF, the Panamanian pro league, is a low budget league that has been around for over 20 years. It started with humble roots and little money. The administrators have kept it alive with shoe string budgets and lots of love. It has produced some decent pros with much less soccer infrastructure than most.

If La Chorrera, Panama, tiny little town in the jungles of Panama, can have that nice of
a Stadium, HOUSTON, TEXAS, 4th Largest city in the US, and energy Capital of the US should definitely have a Stadium for the best team in MLS!!!!!!

SYLVIA!!!!!!!! EL FRANCO!!!!!!! WHERE IS OUR STADIUM!!!!!!!!! ADONDE ESTA NUESTRO ESTADIO!!!!!
Wake up you fools! We are going to lose this team to Atlanta, Miami, St.Louis, or some other undeserving city. Quit stalling. We will be sorry. Abusado Osar, we need you man.

  19. joshquasimoto says:

I am not sure what the outcome “should” be but after watching this game it is apparent that the official, Brizan, had a very poor outing. There were so many two-footed tackles in the game by the Panamanian team, many of which received no call. The red-card to Corey Ashe appeared form what little the camera footage caught to be a case where the Panamanian player cam in sliding while Corey was crossing the ball. Key word here is that the Panamanian player slid into Ashe, not the other way around. Unless there was something off the ball, then there should have been no reason for any action by the ref. Yes, the player was beading but just because a player is hurt does not mean someone deserves a card. The Hainault’s second yellow was even worse because the camera actually caught the action. The Panamanian forward was cutting into the 18 yard box (on the far-side of the field) with Hainault right on his hip. The were both moving to goal and a ball was played towards the Panamanian forward. As he came across Hainault to get the ball both players made contact with one another and the Panamanian player went down like he chopped at the feet. Hainault was obviously frustrated and looked toward the ref making a dive motion. Next thing you know Brizan (the ref) is showing him his second yellow/then red. It was just unnecessary. The ref was completely inconsistent, sometimes calling hard fouls, sometimes letting them go, sometimes calling soft fouls, and sometimes letting them go. If this sort of thing happened in any other league, they would be forced to look at the game and the official game report and see if there is any remedy for such a poor game. Hainault card should be removed and I think that Ashe and Holden should also get consideration.

  20. Christopher says:

“If I were concacaf I would not let him on a YMCA field.”

Easy there, 04. I’ve been playing YMCA adult co-ed soccer for the past couple of years, and have yet see a ref as yellow and red card happy as Brizan was. I have however, seen the YMCA refs show up without a whistle or a watch, neglect to follow the play of the game, and most recently, watched them chat on their cell phone while standing in the middle of the pitch while the game went on around him. Repeated screams to the ref finally had him terminate his call, but there he was the following week, back on duty….

Yes, the game was poorly officiated by him and his staff, and red cards were inexplicably given, but at least he wasn’t on the phone.

  21. freshpow21 says:

Yes, the game was poorly officiated by him and his staff, and red cards were inexplicably given, but at least he wasn’t on the phone.

So this is the standard that professional teams should go by? Pfft. These are professional games with players that play for money and livelyhood. You basically told 04 that he’s right.

That game stank horribly like a ref pandering to the home side. He probably didn’t do it consciously…but he still did it. He didn’t want a riot on his hands.

And you gotta feel for the 2 Dynamo fans that attended. I’m sure they were scared.

Who’s the guy that was calling this stadium in Panama great? The stadium lights went out…yet the rest of the power to the stadium continued. Hmmm…funny if you ask me. CCL is a tourney that we all hoped would mean something…but it’s gross mismanagement has made it a joke. This pisses me off…you too??

  22. christopher says:

freshpow21, you missed my point, which was: yes, ref with a handful of colored cards that he repeatedly shows is bad, but a ref on a phone is worse. In any league, at any level.

  23. O4 says:

Maybe his boss should have called him and talked him thru a properly officiated match. No way could it have been worse. I was embarassed for him after awhile.

  24. freshpow21 says:

My mistake, Christopher. Here’s to hoping we can show a little of that “southern hospitality” to Arabe Unido when they come to town. I want a thrashing.
