A NEW SOCCER STADIUM DOWNTOWN WOULD BE GOOD FOR HOUSTON BECAUSE____________________!

I will start it off with this answer: IT WOULD SPUR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

NOTABLE QUOTES: “HOUSTON is a SOCCER CITY,” Mayor Bill White after the Dynamo won their first cup in 2006

“Soccer is important to Houston. Soccer is Houston. Houston is soccer,” Politician Adrian Garcia.

Ok so am in COLUMBUS, OHIO. Wet and rainy Ohio that is for tonite’s CREW vs WIZARDS second leg. The Crew have to feel pretty comfortable coming back home where they are 11-2-2. Their supporters groups have consolidated as many of you know in the corner of the stadium and it is impactful. Curious to see what they draw tonite.
Rest assured KC coach Curt Onalfo will not drop Claudio Lopez back into midfield due to the suspension of Herculez Gomez. Enter former Ohio State player Roger Espinoza. Wizards likely will have three rookies in the lineup. But the whole synergy of this team currently is around Onalfo moving Jack Jewsbury and Davey Arnaud into central midfield.

The Crew at home I think is worth a goal and they will have a better chance to get their wide game going on the bigger surface.
Little impact in game one from Robbie Rodgers and Eddie Gaven out wide. They of course will have to control and be wary of Arnaud and Lopez breaking out as we saw in game one.

*Brad Guzan was applauded by manager Martin O’Neill of Aston Villa after a wonderful UEFA performance securing a 1-0 win at Slavia Prague. The 24 year old formerly played at Chivas USA who play tonite at home against RSL.
Preki has a choice to make in goal with either Dan Kennedy or Zach Thornton who played in their last game a 1-0 loss at RSL.
Chivas USA at home still makes me think they can reverse this home and home.
Can Yura Movsisyan of RSL continue his amazing goal scoring run. Preki has done a great job of managing this year with numerous challenges, injuries etc.

*Dynamo vs. Red Bulls tomorrow is on Channel 55 at 2pm. No pre-game or post game.
My understanding is that I will be doing a 1 hour post game show on 790 so look outside the stadium for a 790 booth and stick around to catch the broadcast.

Your thoughts on the playoffs and I am looking forward to seeing the amazing environment at Robertson Stadium tomorrow.
More later on Arsenal and Man U plus some preview information on tomorrow between the Dynamo and the RED BULLS.

    SHAME ON MLS!

Lost in this weeks stadium discussion flurry is a programming detail that many Dynamo supporters will be disappointed to discover come Sunday. If they wish to watch THE DEFENDING MLS CHAMPIONS…IN THEIR OWN CITY…IN AN ELIMINATION LEG PLAYOFF MATCH…IN A THREEPEAT QUEST…you can only do so…

    IN SPANISH.

Since every other MLS playoff match has been broadcast IN ENGLISH (via ESPN, HDNet or FSC), and New York gets this match IN ENGLISH on MSG Plus, why have we in Houston been discriminated against? This is an unforgivable disgrace by MLS. I don’t want to hear any nonsense from Garber and the league about our stadium support when they can’t even promote the product to the fans of Houston in our country’s native tongue.

Of all the head-scratching decisions by MLS, this one beats all.

  2. Marco says:

I think you can watch in on channel 55.

  3. wren says:

Sorry for jumping the gun. Although the game is listed on 55 on the Dynamo web site, as of this morning, mlsnet.com only showed Telefutura. Not sure if its corrected now but the match was not listed in the onscreen guide from Comcast as of late last night.

Just responding to bad info from two reasonable sources. Apologies for the rant…carry on.

  4. Lee says:

No, NO, Wren. I agree with you about bad info! I have been misled frequently as to IF/WHEN/WHERE the Dynamo are on TV by the newspaper, Ch 55 schedules
(online) that had not been updated and checked, not to mention, MLS. It is pathetic that we can not see the game in English unless Ch 55 is braodcasting…thank goodness for them!!! I do not have cable so I have watched the game when possible in Spanish. No problem there for me…at least I can see it if I can not get to the game. I have turned on 790 AM to listen while turning down the TV but the time lag is disconcerting! You bring up a good point about MLS and its pathetic lack of support for the Dynamo. See all of you Sunday in Orange!

Glenn: My take on the stadium issue is this, one way or another this will be resolved. This team is too good to let go regardless what Mayor White or some of the other politicians think. If it is true that 10 million is all that is required to consummate this deal, I can’t see this not happening. Downtown would be the preferred location now that 6 blocks of land have been purchased by the City. Politicians are still in a quandry after Hurricane Ike. Many simply do not want to support the Stadium deal when many people are still affected by the Hurricane. The longer we wait the better I think our chances are. Yet the Dynamo are pressing the issue now and so something has to give. It may be that the Golden Boy will jump in and fund the rest. This is an extraordinary investment that will grow exponentially in the years to come. My feeling is they need to build this stadium for seating 25 – 30K or at least design it for easy future expansion. Which brings me to another point. I don’t know if I am that excited about TSU being involved. Will we have field striping issues, will the field require more maintenance and therefore we see the after affects on television? Is it really necessary to have them on board? Then again I am sure this was all thought out before negotiations began with TSU. So the bottom line is this, I feel confident the Dynamo will get their stadium and for that matter, if it doesn’t happen in Downtown, what’s wrong with Sugarland?

  6. BwS says:

I would like to see the stadium deal apart from TSU. Will we need to see the football grid defile the pitch again?

Hopefully that will not be the only way the stadium will be built, with TSU participation. If that is the only way, then so be it, but it would be nice to have a SOCCER stadium!

  7. Dynamoplanet.com says:

A new stadium downtown would mean Houston would officially secure the title of the standard of soccer in America:-)

  8. Glenn…Why the Dynamo is not selling this harder, so far the Dynamo have been very shy of all the money that soccer can bring into the city, just picture downtown Houston few minutes before a friendly game between Monterrey o Los Tigres against our soccer team we are talking about 10 of millions a year on revenues just from few friendly games against the most popular teams from south of the border …

    Come on people wake up….
