Onstad to take on coaching stint for Canada while Togo and Emmanuel Adebayor attacked leaving two apparently dead.

Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad will work with the Canadien Olympic team from January 11th through 18th in Florida.
Onstad will leave early to attend the MLS player combine this weekend and will work with u23 coach Tony Fonseca a former Portugues international who is the head coach.
Onstad mentioned he is particularly excited because he is an assistant coach and not a goalkeeping coach.

Onstad has in my opinion always had a very cerebral look at soccer from is perspective in goal and remains one of the best interviews when it comes to breaking a game down.
Oh and Dynamo fans don’t worry…for the moment this is just a temporary job for Onstad who told me players are preparing for a lockout come February 1.

TOGO TEAM BUS ATTACKED

More coming out from this horrific incident as the Togo team bus crossed the border into Angola from the Republic of the Congo. The bus came under fire and according to an interview on French radio with Togo goalkeeper Kossia Agassa the team wants out of the African Nations Cup and is urging other countries to do the same after a team meeting with captain Emmanuel Adebayor who plays for Manchester City in the English Premier League.
An assistant coach and spokesperson apparently died in the attack and an unnamed back-up goalkeeper is said to be in serious condition and some say the death toll has risen to four so this all seems a bit nebulous.
Of course Angolan officials say the tournament will go on and that it can still be a great party……..sure tell that to the families of the slain individuals.
This also will most definetly put a bit of fear and hesitation into some over the ability of South Africa to host the 2010 World Cup.
English Premier League managers have always been concerned with the African Nations Cup and are weighing in over the safety concern of their players.
Should the African Nations Cup go on?

FIFA statement on MLS/ Player association labor dispute…….De Los Cobos to Fire…..

Well here it is from Fifa and Sepp Blatter concerning the ongoing talks between the players association and MLS.

“Fifa can confirm it has received correspondence regarding a current issue involving the MLS and the MLS players union and their ongoing negotiations.
Fifa understands that this domestic issue is being resolved in accordance with the U.S. Labor Laws and does not involve the U.S. Soccer Federation. FIfa will not interfere in the process. We have been assured that Fifa’s regulations have been and will be respected.”

So what are your thoughts on this. FIFA acting big but really not getting involved? Is this a blow to the players association who have consistently mentioned Fifa rules and being treated like players around the world? How does this seem to impact any future World Cup being held in the U.S. and do you truly believe the U.S. Soccer Federation is not involved with the negotiation process as Sunil Gulati U.S. Soccer head also works for the Revolution and Kraft Sports ?

Many including Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad have said that they are prepared for a lock-out from the league who have said all that talk is pre-mature. I am convinced this will be salvaged before the 31st of January. There is just too much at stake.

CARLOS DE LOS COBOS

Another hispanic coach has entered MLS with Carlos De Los Cobos taking over the Chicago Fire to join Martin Vazquez at Chivas USA.
De Los Cobos did magic with the El Salvador national team during recent World Cup qualifying and is highly regarded by the players he coaches.
He could be an excellent fit in Chicago. Do you like the hiring and should Denis Hamlett have had another year ?

So here is a good one to keep an eye on this weekend.
Landon Donovan could make his debut for Everton against of all teams Arsenal at the Emirates.
Ok I see it now……..Donovan doesn’t start for David Moyes and the Toffees but does come on late with Arsenal holding a one goal advantage and looking to kill the game off.
Donovan picks up a ball in a wide channel blows by a fatigued defender and sets up Tim Cahill for an equalizer.
Ok, so that was my look into a crystal ball but what a platform to make a debut at the Emirates it just might be for Landon Donovan.
Donovan has made it clear he is up for this loan deal and says his fitness level has almost peaked.
Are you excited to see Donovan in the EPL and how do you think he will fare?

As for Arsenal they just might be the ‘Barcelona’ of the EPL with their attractive football style under Arsene Wenger. Now they have gotten results to go along with style and are right in the EPL title race. Should be an interesting 2010 !

Other games to keep an eye on: HULL CITY VS. CHELSEA- Jozy Altidore still trying to cope with EPL……Blues look to get off to good start in 2010
BIRMINGHAM VS. MANCHESTER UNITED- The wrath of United and Ferguson could come out on Birmingham after being knocked out of FA Cup
by Leeds.

CLINT DEMPSEY hit for his 6th EPL goal earlier in the week in a 3-2 Fulham loss against Stoke at the Brittania Stadium. Dempsey scored in the 85th minute.
