What a weekend of football!!!
All eyes today on the LA Galaxy and San Jose game tonite. We are hoping for San Jose to take a point or beat the LA Galaxy and then it would come down to the Dynamo winning at Chivas USA tomorrow as they hold the tie-breaker. Exciting finish to the season. Here is what is on the MLS slate today:

TORONTO AT NEW YORK- Final game at Giants Stadium before moving into Harrison, New Jersey facility. I will speak more about the Cosmos and the wonder years at that stadium.
Lets bury the Metrostars and old Red Bulls because they never were impactful and have a new beginning in NJ. Toronto and Dwayne DeRosario need a win and help. What a disappointment if Toronto doesn’t get in playoffs.

DC UNITED AT KC….United need a win and help…….KC already out of it.

COLORADO AT RSL…..Please don’t mention the Rocky Mountain Cup because no one cares. This is for a playoff spot and last year RSL crushed Colorado playoff hopes in Colorado,
can Rapids return the favor. RSL a long shot.

SAN JOSE at LA….Houston fans are pulling for Arturo Alvarez , Ryan Johnson and company to stick it to LA at the HDC…..

FC DALLAS AT SEATTLE….I have to say the FC Dallas story is a great one and with some player acquisitions are the hottest team in MLS right now. David Ferreira has adapted beautifully to MLS, Dax McCarty has owned his role, Jeff Cunningham is smiling and scoring goals and there is a real buzz. I am pulling for FC Dallas because right now they are interesting and need a boost up 1-45.

DYNAMO AT CHIVAS USA…….Another shot at turning a more positive twist on heading into the playoffs. A win at Chivas could be huge and I believe the larger field will be a blessing to the Dynamo who hopefully will find their possession game. The moment of truth is upon us now. A great game at Chivas and playoff optimism is back.

NE AT COLUMBUS….Crew not scoring goals as of late heading into the playoffs despite winning the Supporters Shield, Steve Nicol somehow has this team in contention without marquee players like Twellman and Ralston. Revs need a tie and help from others. What does Shalrie Joseph have left …..looking for a league MVP? IT could be him if his team gets in playoffs.

SUPERCLASICO time tomorrow…..Club America and Chivas will get together for this classic that will draw huge tv numbers. Six straight matches have brought different coaching match-ups. Chivas is 3-1-1 under Raul Arias and will try to get it done at Azteca Stadium. Both teams are in third place in their groups. Chivas have improved defensively and are not giving up goals as of late just the perfect challenge for Salvador Cabanas of America.

RIVER AND BOCA will square off in another of the world’s great rivalry matches. How about the crisis at River Plate who have not win in their last 7 games…..Boca has won 3 straight after losing 3 straight. The site is River’s home Monumental

LIVERPOOL host MAN U and have lost four straight matches. Rafa Benitez has been giving the kiss of death from owner George Gillett who recently lauded his under fire manager.

FREDDY LJUNBERG of Seattle believes each MLS team needs three top European players to be even more impactful on the quality of play.
What do you think?

More information coming soon please consider attending this camp which will showcase area college and youth coaches and help us fight cancer not to mention three days of learning and fun!

Thank You for supporting soccer in the media…..Memorial Hermann, Fiesta, Danish Inspirations Contemporary Furniture on Fondren, Mark West Pinot Noir, Soccertots, Space City Futbol Club……

*BLANCO influence……On a wet and rainy night at Toyota Park the Chicago Fire beat Chivas USA 1-0 . Cuauhtemoc Blanco was brought on in the 64th minute and three minutes later the Fire had the decisive goal as his corner was headed in by Eduardo Lillingston of Chivas USA who was labeled with the own goal. Tough night to determine much as the conditions were windy and wet but lots of credit to the Chicago fans who braved the environment. Nice touch seeing Chris Armas a former Fire midfielder inducted into the Ring of Honor at Toyota Park……….

*Thumbs up to the Columbus Crew and coach Robert Warzycha for winning the Supporters Shield. It is tough taking over a team that has just won an MLS Cup and leading it to a great season. Remember that Columbus got off to a slow start and many were questioning Warzycha and his ability to carry on the quality after Sigi Schmid left. Great seeing an MLS assistant do his time be patience and do well with his opportunity. He could be the coach of the year but LA fans will quickly mention Bruce Arena, Seattle Sigi Schmid. Could Shellas Hyndman be in the mix if FC Dallas hits the playoffs or what about Steve Nicol in NE if he gets them in without marquee player Taylor Twellman or Steve Ralston…..?
Six teams are fighting for the final two playoffs spots this weekend with Chicago getting their spot last night.

* As much as a lightning rod of emotion that Blanco is he truly is an influence on his team and proved it again last night. Who is that player currently for the Dynamo? Who might become the bona-fide leader in the playoffs up on Sunday or in the playoffs. Will that person come out of the group of Brian Ching, Ricardo Clark, Stuart Holden, Brian Mullan or Brad Davis? NE has Shalrie Joseph, FC Dallas has Jeff Cunningham, LA has LD while Chicago has Blanco and Seattle Ljunberg… So how do you feel about the Dynamo heading into the final regular season game and the playoffs at this point? Optimistic or not?

*Soccer Matters with Glenn Davis the tv show on Fox Sports Houston is brought to you by MEMORIAL HERMANN SPORTS MEDICINE INSTITUTE and Danish Inspirations.
The show re-airs today at 3pm and includes interviews with Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear , top ten goals, local college focus plus we hear the opinions of Dynamo fans at the Dynamo/LA game…….

*Oguchi Onyewu is out for 6 months apparently following surgery to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee according to U.S. Soccer. This clearly could jeopardize his World Cup and he is a super long shot . Onyewu sadly was injured in the final minutes against Costa Rica last week in the U.S.’s final World Cup qualifier. Sadly every World Cup cycle the dreams of players going to a World Cup are shattered……Chris Armas, Frankie Hejduk among others have all had to deal with this heartache……

*Longest serving Real Madrid fan dies….Felix Perez Alvarez at 99 years of age died of natural causes this week and was a supporter of the “Galacticos” since 1923 and was a paying member of the club for 86 years. He saw Madrid win 31 league titles and nine European Cups (Champions League currently). Saturday Real Madrid will wear black armbands in his honor……..Would you as Dynamo fans pay a membership fee to help support the club? Should that be included in your ticket prices? Would it create more loyalty and passion to the club and could the concept work here? Give me your thoughts?

*Geoff Cameron was awarded the save of the week by MLS but what most have missed is that Edson Buddle nudged him to the ground and then got off the shot. Cameron picked himself off the ground to get up and make the spectacular play!!!

FIESTA, DANISH INSPIRATIONS, SOCCERTOTS, MARK WEST PINOT NOIR, SPACE CITY FUTBOL…….thanks to these sponsors who support the game in the media!!!!!!!

This was tough to watch last night and a major disappointment. The Dynamo are out of the Concacaf Champions League.
The Dynamo heading into the evening needed help from Pachuca who beat Arabe Unido 2-0 earlier in the evening. Now the Dynamo needed to get a win at Metapan in El Salvador and it would be on to the quarterfinals like last year. It didn’t happen.

Were the Dynamo ready? Not from the start as within the blink of an eye inside 10 minutes they were down 2-0.
Elias Montes (7th) after sloppy play and then Anel Canales (8th) put up Metapan 2-0 in front of a small crowd in El Salvador.

The Dynamo played out of a starting point of a 3-5-2 and did not look comfortable but would come back after a goal from Geoff Cameron and then one credited to goalkeeper Tally Hall after Jose Luis Gonzalez mis-judged his free kick and made contact with Brian Ching.

The Dynamo would get chances but be denied by second half goalkeeper Alvaro Alfaro who made a couple of sparkling saves.
With the scoreline 2-2 Emerson Umana took a free kick that deflected in past Tally Hall and would be the final scoreline of 3-2.
Dynamo manager Dominic Kinnear was visibly upset throughout this match on the sideline.

Any international competition that MLS teams play in are opportunities to grow respect for the league and to earn credibility in the eyes of fans that have yet to be convinced. Remember how the Dynamo destroyed Arabe Unido at Robertson? Believe it or not as amateurish as Arabe Unido looked yesterday against Pachuca they now have advanced out of the Dynamo group along with Pachuca. MLS teams have got to find a way to consistently win in the tournament. The usual suspects from Mexico like Toluca, Cruz Azul and UNAM Pumas have all advanced like they were supposed to.
The fact remains also that on Mexican soil as difficult as it is MLS teams are 0-17-2……..
The Dynamo next take on Chivas USA this Sunday at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. You can preview Chivas USA tonite against Chicago on Espn 2. The Fire looking to seal their playoff berth at home.

Columbus advanced to the quarterfinals after drawing 1-1 with Puerto Rico while DC United got a great result 1-1 at Toluca but will have to wait until Thursday to find out their fate.
Teams like Arabe Unido and W Connection (who remain a possibility) should not be advancing in this tournament before MLS clubs.

For the moment like the weather I am down………..

AC Milan pulled off a stunning win at Real Madrid winning 3-2 at the Bernabeau. The magic of Brazilian Pato continues from the weekend in Serie A as he scored twice including a late game winner off a brilliant pass from Clarence Seedorf. The win was much needed for an under attack Leonardo who pulled off his biggest coaching win.
Both goalkeepers Ilker Casillas of Real Madrid and Dida of AC Milan had less than memorable games clearly making mistakes………..Did you see this match and what were your thoughts?

*Dynamo vs. Isidro Metapan tonite on FSC at 9pm. The Dynamo will need Pachuca to beat Arabe Unido in an earlier match and then produce a result in El Salvador.

* Lots of great Champions League matches today on FSC including Manchester United and CSKA Moscow, Real Madrid and AC Milan plus Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.
It will be interesting to see Man U going to Luzhniki Stadium in Russia. I loved the upsets yesterday with Ruben Kazan of Russia winning amazingly at the Nou Camp against Barcelona 2-1…..And Liverpool for the 4th straight game losing at home………Your thoughts on yestersday and today are wanted?

*Texas Rush Youth Soccer club announced a partnership with Auxerre in France. The partnership includes player development, coaching education and coaching exchange with Rush coaches. Auxerre gets access to 35,000 of Rush soccer around the country while the Rush are apparently getting financial support for their Academy program.
It will be interesting to see if an American teen ager identified by Auxerre as a potential pro might ever make the move to France…..More on this in the future.

* Keep an eye on tomorrow night with Chivas USA at Chicago on Espn 2 so you can preview the Dynamo at Chivas USA on Sunday.

Ok I know what the general sports media will be saying…0-0 draw …it was boring etc. but it was a fantastic turn-out of fans and David Beckham whether you like it or not doubled attendance.
We all know the game had it’s exciting moments and it would have been much more open and entertaining had the Dynamo taken either the Luis Landin or Brian Mullan chance in the first half. Score then and LA has to come out and play and maybe the second half would have looked more aesthically pleasing.
LA brought on Landon Donovan, hoped for him to make a play and tucked in their two wide midfielders and sat back for the draw.

A rock hard field didn’t help to soften up the game and it was interesting to see Geoff Cameron criticize the field that was practiced on by the UH football team on Thursday.
This is life as a tenant. In the second half it took the ball an enternity to come down with the game getting more direct and midfield’s being by-passed. Notice little involvment from Stuart Holden and David Beckham in the build-up of the second half?

Thoughts:
1.) A first half Dynamo goal would have changed the complexion of the day and LA tactics.

2.) Beckham and Donovan average at best….

3.) Red card parade continues in bizarre fashion

4.) Donovan Ricketts was the best Donovan in this game

5.) Atmosphere was awesome..

6. El Battalon banner was doubly awesome…..

7.) Landin was mobile during the first 45 minutes and then his fitness level had him standing around getting hammered by the LA backs…….

8.) Geoff Cameron was the main target on corners with Brian Ching pulling Omar Gonzalez out of the middle

9.) Cameron got dumped by Edson Buddle but then got off the ground to clear off the line…..Onstad and Chabala had made the initial save on Buddle…

10.) Dynamo bench was thin without Ashe and Weaver…..

Dynamo will train tomorrow and then head to El Salvador to take on Isidro Metapan..they need to win and get a Pachuca win over Arabe Unido…….In MLS the Dynamo will now hope for LA to lose and if so could still win the west on Sunday with a win over Chivas USA….the Dynamo could finish anywhere from first to fourth……It will be a crazy MLS week coming up…….Give me your thoughts on the Dynamo? These games are moments to impress new fans…was it achieved?

A big day for futbol in our city!!! Dynamo vs. Galaxy preview!!!

Dynamo vs. LA today at Robertson Stadium TV Fox Sports Houston, KHOU 11.2

* NOTE: If you catch the game on Fox Sports Houston you can catch “SOCCER MATTERS with GLENN DAVIS presented by MEMORIAL HERMANN SPORTS MEDICINE INSTITUTE” at 1:30 pm.
Lots of Dynamo vs. LA talk in this show and interviews with Dynamo players on the big match!!!!

MATCH-UP

General: The Dynamo have not put a full 90 minute game together for a long time. Lots of good halves and portions of games but today the “call to arms” is a full 90 minute performance. A great first 45 minutes vs. Pachuca reminded us of what the Dynamo are capable of Champions League and the competitive instincts were out in a 2-1 “friendly” win over Monterrey that may turn out to be significant preparation for today’s game against LA. Win two games and you can win the Western Conference title and it starts today with Beckham, Donovan and company. The Dynamo are 8-1-5 at home.
LA obviously come in with two players that make a difference in Donovan and Beckham and a good road record of 5-2-7 and have been turned around by Bruce Arena this year.

Goalkeeping: Two experienced goalkeepers on display today. Pat Onstad remains solid and stable and will have to keep his players in front of him sharp with the constant threat of Donovan working in and around his back four. Donovan Ricketts has been a huge signing for LA and is responsible for getting them points that they didn’t deserve earlier in the year hiding some deficiences at the back. His kicking game is good also. Two interesting goalkeepers capable of making plays to win the game on this day.

Defenders: The Dynamo one would assume continues with the three incumbents in Bobby Boswell, Geoff Cameron and Andrew Hainault. Eddie Robinson in my opinion is not ready yet for a game of this magnitude fitness wise. So who fills the other outside back position? With Hainault capable of playing on either side the choices come down to Mike Chabala, Craig Waibel or Wade Barrett.
For LA it is a blend of experience and youth but they will be without AJ De La Garza who did not travel due to injury ….Omar Gonzalez out of Maryland is solid in the air but can be had on the floor in the middle. Lots of movement and interplay on the ground in and around Gonzalez and the veteran Greg Berhalter can bring success. Sean Franklin last years rookie of the year is healthy and has been a big plus returning to the lineup. He can get forward also. Todd Dunivant who played in San Jose with many of the Dynamo should fill in for De La Garza and has been in the big game before.

Midfield: The Dynamo have more mobility and speed in this area of the field with Ricardo Clark, Brian Mullan, Stuart Holden and Brad Davis. Clark in particular has a huge job helping to defend vertically on Donovan who will check back into the hole in midfield. This is the area of concern.
Bruce Arena once brought an aging midfield into Robertson Stadium when managing the the Red Bulls and got run over 5-0. Significance? Maybe none but worth noting.
Some believe because of the smaller dimensions they can get away with using more veterans which can be true.
Expect LA to use Eddie Lewis (super passer of the ball ), David Beckham (central but will float wide alot), Chris Birchall (holding role or right side) and Chris Klein or Dema Kovalenko. Kovalenko could play wide or in the middle.
Lots of experience here and this midfield match up bears watching.
With Beckham pulling wide it may give a bit more room to Stuart Holden…conversly the Galaxy could find space when Brad Davis goes central for the Dynamo…Does Chabala or the left back for the Dynamo push higher into midfield? If so it will give the mobile Donovan the opportunity to pull center backs out of the middle by making runs into that space.
A great chess match here!

Forwards: Brian Ching did not play for the U.S. and with the emergence of Charlies Davies, Jozy Altidore and Conor Casey has dropped in the pecking order.
Ching needs to eat some nails for breakfast and get after it like fans know he can. Today just might be that day playing against his buddy Landon Donovan whom he wants to accompany to South Africa. With Cam Weaver out due to suspension one assumes Luis Landin will start . Mobility and movement around the LA center backs is a must.
Berhalter and Gonzalez love center forwards who stand and don’t move. Oduro is the option of the bench and this is his role.
Donovan will have a free reign and moves smarter and with more purpose than any striker in this league. It is a constant challenge mentally for the Dynamo. Be concerned if he is not active physically because his brain is still working.
Edson Buddle has pace himself and can reap the benefits of the Donovan movement and Beckham passing.
Alan Gordon is a target type option off the bench and Bryan Jordan is a bundle of energy that is a pest.

Bench: LA has the advantage today with Ashe injured, Weaver suspended. Jordan and Gordon are good options from an attacking perspective.

Tactics: Dynamo must be aggressive but not reckless like last year against the New York Red Bulls in the playoffs. With game changers in Beckham and Donovan it has to be a great day of focus and concentration. These two will punish mistakes.
The way to manage the game against LA is through posession and acute awareness once the ball is lost. It is obvious the Dynamo will need to pressure Donovan and Beckham to limit time and space.
Brian Mullan must continue to impress and have a big day wide…………….

Have your say?

ASTON VILLA buoyed by Brad Friedel defeated Chelsea 2-1 today at Villa Park . Richard Dunn scored the tying goal while James Collins was the unlikely source after three and a half years scoring his first goal which would become the game winner. Both goals coming off corners for Villa and Chelsea has shown that they are vulnerable on set pieces throughout the year. How about Friedel with another important performance. Two losses in a row for Chelsea at Wigan and Villa. This year they have poorly defended set pieces.
In fact two weeks ago I showed you on Soccer Matters with Glenn Davis on Fox Sports Houston how poor this squad is defending set pieces………

Diego Maradona just couldn’t wait to tell the media to stick it after Argentina qualified for the World Cup.
I really have to chuckle about this one. Here was an opportunity for Maradona to be above it and show that he has a sense of class and leadership and the press got what they wanted, a profanity laced tirade on television.
And to make it all even sweeter, Julio Grondona the head of the Argentina FA defended Maradona claiming “if it were another coach or player the matter would not have had such importance”.
Argentina fans are you proud of Maradona coaching your squad?

*France ,Portugal, Russia and Greece will be seeded in the playoffs to decide the final four European spots for the 2010 World Cup. The playoffs are NOv. 14 and Nov. 18. The four will be paired against Ukraine, Ireland, Bosnia and Sovenia. The draw will be this Monday.

* Not a big follower of the FIFA rankings but for those of you who are the U.S. ranked number 11 in the world with Brazil number 1.

HEY FRANK…QUAKES give us a hand…….you can bet the Dynamo manager Dominic Kinnears good friend Frank Yallop is hoping to pull off a win today against Chivas USA. The game is a huge one for Dynamo fans to keep an eye on as Chivas USA have a game in hand on the Dynamo and Galaxy.
To say tomorrow is critical for winning the Western Conference is an understatement.

DYNAMO FRONT OFFICE is urging fans to arrive early due to a partial lane closure on Scott. St. near Elgin St., fans are advised to arrive early and take alternative routes, including Cullen Blvd., Spur 5 or MacGregor Drive. Plan accordingly for the 2pm kick-off.

*Someone is spreading a rumor that David Beckham will not be in Houston due to his impending signing with AC Milan . Utter nonsense and I wonder if this is some anti-soccer planted information. I have no idea where this rumor started but here is what I know. Beckham will be here on Sunday and TICKETS STILL REMAIN AVIALABLE for the 2pm kick-off at Robertson Stadium. Fans are encouraged to get to the game early on Sunday with the gates opening at 12:30…….Don’t miss this historic game in Houston!!!
Post game radio call in show after the game is on 950 AM radio……..air it out!!!

* A Beckham deal is expected to be close to being completed for him to return to AC Milan during the winter transfer window and the Galaxy have made it no secret they want it done before the team heads into the playoffs in order to avoid distraction. Beckham told World Soccer News “It’s close. Iv’e always said I want to go back there if they want me.” He added more…..”AC have said they wanted me back since I left to go back to the United States and they’re saying the same now. It’s 95 percent done so I don’t know why it wouldn’t happen now.”
What are your thoughts on the Beckham saga as it continues?

*
I finally was able to watch the whole U.S./ Costa Rica game yesterday. Full disclosure…I was at the U2 concert on Wednesday. It was great to finally have our opportunity to watch the U.S. national team celebrate their success for qualifying for the World Cup even though it was a few days late after not having the game televised in Honduras.
It is a time to be excited for the moment despite some serious questions around health with Oguchi Onyewi, Charlie Davies in question.
Jonathan Bornstein deserves credit for producing a solid game at left back which has been a question point. Landon Donovan was not at his sharpest yet he makes the play to get the U.S. on the board…….The late tying goal from Bornstein was emotional and the U.S. players and staff under Bob Bradley deserved the moment to shine as they are the top team in Concacaf World Cup qualifying. Did they grab a bit of momentum back ………yes they did.
I love the integrity of the U.S. National team and Bob Bradley playing a squad to win against Costa Rica and was a wonderful example that should be applauded. Honduras is thankful as well. How many times over the years have we seen qualified teams put poor squads out and it alters who goes to a World Cup etc.

*AC Milan president Adriano Galliani is fuming over the injury yesterday to defender Oguchi Onyewu who was playing with the U.S. National team. Just a reminder again of the real discord between clubs who pay huge salaries and national teams . Onyewu is going to be out for four months with a knee injury and AC Milan is wanting compensation from U.S. Soccer. Do you agree with this?

*LIVE RADIO and FREE OYSTERS at El Pacifico Restaurant at 5800 Bellaire Blvd (corner of Bellaire and Renwick ) 713-218-0701…every person that comes for live radio receives a half dozen oyster’s each! elpacificosushi.com…….We are going to make this a party!!!!!
