New signing Weaver scores twice as Dynamo go atop of West….

New Dynamo signing Cam Weaver scored twice as the Houston Dynamo dispatched Fc Dallas 3-1.
Weaver was also denied twice by FC Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse in succession or he might have had a hat trick.
In the end it is his most fruitful night in his short MLS career and the Dynamo kept their balance well for a tired team, scored timely goals and got some good goalkeeping.
It was a night the Dynamo had to let the game come to them a bit based on fatigue.
Another solid win.

*I particularly liked the way Weaver beat Burse on his second goal after the build-up from Dominic Oduro and Cory Ashe. With his hips square to the target he opened up and was able to beat Burse high to the upper corner. Some great finishing.

*The Dynamo produced a workmanlike effort playing amazingly their third game in eight days. At times they looked fatigued, conceded dangerous chances in the first half but really scored goals at opportune times to play the game always in the lead. Pat Onstad provided some timely saves and FC Dallas did create chances only to get a goal from Drew Moor.
Brek Shea from Brenham did play the entire second half for FC Dallas.

*Richard Mulrooney hit a bullet from the top of the box against his former team to give the Dynamo a 2-0.

*Again you have to point to the depth that Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear and the Dynamo has put together.

I particularly enjoyed the orange flares from the vocal and impactful Dynamo fans that brought atmosphere to Pizza Hut Park. The road support was outstanding and had to be uplifting to the players to come out on the field to that welcome!

Your thoughts on the game?

DC UNITED 2 CHICAGO 1
This was at RFK with a solid 18,000 in attendance.
Poor penalty call lead to a Jaime Moreno PK to put DC United up 1-0. Actually it was a JOKE of a penalty call against Chicago goalkeeper Jon Busch.
Two great goals would follow with Marco Pappa of Chicago scoring a beauty for Chicago and Christian Gomez with a vintage free kick to make the difference.

SEATTLE 2 SAN JOSE 1

Freddy Ljunberg and Fredy Montero scored goals for the Sounders to counter Darren Huckerby for San Jose.
Chris Wondoloski got the start for San Jose but had limited impact with his new teammates.
Patrick Ianni the former Dynamo defender was everywhere for Seattle and produced his best ever MLS game through solid distribution (some beautiful balls over distance), timely tackles and an assistant.

RSL 2 LA 0
An elusive road win for RSL and the Galaxy just can’t open up and attack due to average overall team speed and athleticism and Landon Donovan being in South Africa .
Big night for Yura Movsisyan who hit a brilliant first goal.
On another note, I am hoping LA gets into the playoffs with David Beckham on the squad for the overall awareness for the league.

Don’t forget to visit the prior blog with Tom Green visiting youth soccer fields. Some pretty funny stuff!

Dynamo fans roll up to Dallas for rivalry match tonite….

header.jpg

Large distances always provide a challenge for away fans to get to MLS games so it won’t be a surprise today to see alot of Dynamo fans at Pizza Hut Park.
After the abysmal attendance last weekend at the FC Dallas / San Jose 2-2 draw one wonders how “orange” Pizza Hut Park will look today?
More intense rivalry and won’t occur without fans or media and Dallas needs to hold it’s end of the bargain up.
Perusing Dallas newspapers today their is little to nothing on this game, the newspapers don’t even list the club amongst all the other professional franchises. The MLS media connection is not working in Dallas .

On to the game……You can catch the Dynamo and FC Dallas on FSC tonite if you have not made the trip and if you are in Dallas get out to PHP and support your professional soccer team “hoops fans”.

FC DALLAS PLAYERS TO WATCH: Ken Cooper Jr- you would expect the usual solid effort from the big man as he pushes for a Gold Cup spot with the U.S.
David Ferriera- he has represented Colombia and scored last weekend. Is he figuring out MLS

DYNAMO PLAYERS TO WATCH: Cam Weaver -could get his second consecutive start and debuted wonderfully for the Dynamo last week.
Geoff Cameron- continues to impress consistently week in and week out.
Stuart Holden- scoring goals, playing with confidence and just plain fun to watch……

German player to join U.S. squad/ Julius James loaned to Minnesota in USL

Schalke 04 midfielder Jermaine Jones has quickly become a story after recently telling the German Soccer Federation (DVB) that he wants to play for the United States National team.
Jones has dual citizenship with his father being an American soldier and his mother of German nationality.

The follwing is a quote from the AP from German national team coach Joachim Loew.
“We’ve accepted Jermaine Jones decision and we wish him the best in his future career.”

What makes Jones eligible is the fact that he has only played in three games representing Germany which were all exhibitions according to new FIFA rules that have removed age limits for players that want to change national allegiance. Previously players who had represented one country at youth level had to make the choice to change by age 21. In fact it was that ruling that had ruled out U.S. born Arturo Alvarez who recently had lobbied to play for El Salvador after not recieving a shot with the U.S. National team full squad.
Things could now change for Alvarez.
Players that are not getting a shot with their preferred country will explore other opportunities if they have that possibility.

US Soccer president Sunil Gulati was quoted as follows:

“I understand from Jermaine Jones’ respresentatives and now from public statements by the DFB of his intention to apply for a change of status under FIFA’s recently revised regulations. Once that process is complete he will be eligible for selection to the U.S. National team.”

In the case of Jones he is a holding midfielder and many are now drawing comparisons to Thomas Dooley a German who joined the ill-fated U.S. team at the 98 World Cup under Steve Sampson.

What are your thoughts on both Alvarez and Jones? Get them a U.S. cap? Would the Gold Cup be a great place to start with these two players?

*Julius James is headed to the Minnesota Thunder to get some much needed playing time on loan.

Manchester United to sell Cristiano Ronaldo for $131 million to Real Madrid………So what do you think United fans?

cristiano_ronaldo_757022.jpg

According to the Manchester United website the on and off again future of Cristiano Ronaldo seems to be coming to a conclusion.
Ronaldo is expected to be sold to Real Madrid for an obscene amount of money and the deal will go through on June 30.
Now before I get back to Ronaldo and United we must remind ourselves that Real Madrid are spending and amazing $228 million on two players which includes the recently bought Kaka who goes for $92 million alone and was the record signing until this “new” deal with Ronaldo for $131 million.
Insanity?
Of course United needs the money and Ronaldo has been a repeated “stay” or “go” guy so maybe the bigger question remains on how the money is invested.
Frenchman Franck Ribery has been mentioned.
Lets also not forget the team concept of United and manager Alex Ferguson who has off-loaded players in the past including stars David Beckham and Roy Keane who ability to draw attention or ego’s got to big for the overall concept.
Lets not forget it was only last December when Ferguson said he wouldn’t sell “that mob a virus” in regards to selling to Real Madrid.
Is this obscene money for any athlete to be paid? And as a United fan was it time for Ronaldo to go and where should the money be re-invested?

Timely goal key for Dynamo in win over Chivas USA/ Mexico squeak by T&T while Maradona and Argentina lose again

holden.jpg

The Dynamo just keep on getting results and shutouts and are now 8-0-2 in their last 10 games.
The 1-0 win over Chivas now brings them to within 3 points of Chivas USA in the Western Conference with two games in hand.
The Dynamo are off to FC Dallas this weekend and something tells me their will be quite the “orange” display.

On to the game.
The Dynamo are finding different ways to win games with different personel.
Chivas had the better of the possession in midfield during the first half playing with a five man midfield against the Dynamo.
Their additional player in the middle of the field made it hard for the Dynamo to get their possession game going and play through Stuart Holden and wide men Brad Davis and Brian Mullen.

Not until the 32nd minute did the Dynamo really look to be dangerous but with some diagonal balls and more inclusion of wide play the Dynamo looked to get the game’s first goal.
Stuart Holden shot wide, Brian Mullan produced some crosses and you got the sense the goal was coming.

TIMELY GOAL: It came in first half stoppage time when Pat Onstad’s long goal kick found newly signed Cam Weaver whose flicked header put Stuart Holden in 1 one 1 against Zach Thornton. Holden laid down Thornton and calmy hit and empty net ending a sequence that was an example of direct play. The timing of the goal was significant because if Chivas USA would have gotten out at the half 0-0 they would have been confident heading into the second half.
But lets examine the goal for a minute and how it happened. Off Onstad’s goal kick Weaver came towards the ball pulling out a central defender and leaving all kinds of space.
Holden’s movement off Cameron was perfect and he made the run with the belief that Weaver would flick the header into space. Holden’s composure was impressive on the goal!

GETTING THE LEAD SIGNIFICANT……The first goal against Chivas is essential in that they no how to nurse and milk a lead and are a hard team to play against when down.
The Holden goal forced Chivas to chase the game and their tactical set-up changing twice in the second half ultimately playing with three strikers.
Pat Onstad produced a timely save as always on Maykel Galindo while prior the Dynamo found more room going forward after Chivas altered lineup.

STAR MEN……Geoff Cameron – steady at the back and timely with decisions and tackles.
Stuart Holden- continues to be a box to box player and produces the game winner running off of Weaver.
Cam Weaver- solid debut.

Depth, spirit and confidence in abundance right now and the squad produces another important win without focal points Brian Ching and Ricardo Clark.
Dominic Kinnear pushing all the right buttons and growing the depth of squad through intelligent subtle player acquisitions.

What are your thoughts and observations on the Dynamo win?

MEXICO squeaked by Trinidad and Tobago at Azteca Stadium taking the full three points on goals from Guillermo Franco and Oscar Rojas.
Less than convincing? Speaking of less than convincing that might be what you say about Diego Maradona’s run in charge of Argentina.
They went down at Ecuador 2-0 .

Dynamo / Chivas USA tonite at Robertson / Concacaf Champions League draw and more note of interest..

Having just watched the Chivas USA / Seattle Sounders game it is fair to say that Chivas USA was fortunate to get this 1-0 result at the Home Depot Center.
Seattle created the far better chances but could not apply the finishing touch.
Get the first goal tonite and the Dynamo are in business……..

On another note of interest for Dynamo fans don’t forget that tomorrow is the Concacaf Champions League draw.
The Dynamo are are one of eight teams including Toluca, UNAM Pumas, Columbus Crew, Saprissa, Marathon, Isidro Metapan, either Communciaciones or Municipal that get passage directly to the group stage.
So as much as the focus has been on the Dynamo in league play it is safe to assume international competition is right around the corner.
The draw will be conducted at the Trump Tower Concacaf television studio which I presume is the suite of one Chuck Blazer…….

Juventus striker ALESSANDRO DEL PIERO is still awaiting an offer from Juventus and fans are concerned according to TUTTOSPORT. The 34 year old legend is tied to the team until the end of next season. Hmmm MLS possibly?

Barcelona are now tied to Luca Toni of Bayern Munich in their search for a striker as it now appears as though Samuel Eto’o will move during the summer transfer window.
U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu is heading to England according to the Daily Mail to play for Birmingham City. Onyewu is apparently set to sign a three year deal as he is now a free agent. Onyewu briefly tasted the Premier League with Newcastle United appearing in 11 games two years ago…….

Game on! Chivas vs. Dynamo tonite at “the Rob”………Mexico must win vs. Trinidad and Tobago

An “edgy” history, quality players, two bright coaching minds and the atmosphere of Robertson Stadium await fans tonite!
I look forward to this one in a big way as it is a six point swing match that is available for both teams who are missing star players .
Whose depth and tactics will prove out? If you want to know then get yourself out to the stadium tonite!!!

DID YOU KNOW?: Chivas has never won at Robertson Stadium

DID YOU KNOW?: The Dynamo are now on a run of 9 games unbeaten at 7-0-2

DID YOU KNOW?: That both teams come off 1-0 wins. The Dynamo winning on the road at Chicago while Chivas USA with a depleted squad beat Seattle 1-0 at the Home Depot Center.

COULD WE SEE?: Forty year old Mexican legend Claudio Suarez who retired and then re-joined Chivas. He played last game against Seattle and said he felt “like a rookie”.

This will be a night that the Dynamo ability to absorb the loss of key players will once again be on display. Brian Ching is out injured while Ricardo Clark is in South Africa with the U.S. National team to compete in the Confederations Cup. Chivas seems even more depleted and will have to depend on tactics tonite to overcome the abscences of Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Klejstan. Defender Shavar Thomas and Justin Braun who is a striker that played in midfield vs. Seattle are questionable.
Chivas USA will welcome the return and availability of Jesse Marsch and Ante Jazic.
Could Dominic Kinnear bring in and use new striker Cam Weaver acquired from San Jose for Chris Wondoloski? What are your thoughts on Ade Akinbiyi so far?

Lots of interesting questions that will be answered tonite at Robertson Stadium. Will you be there?

IS IT A MUST WIN? You bet it is. MEXICO takes on Trinidad and Tobago in desperate need of points?
Give me your thoughts on El Tri/
