Dynamo vs. Quakes preview, EPL teams in survival mode plus Mexican League playoffs and Maldini in final game at San Siro

sanjosedynamo.jpg

I love game day and the days leading up to it. The process, thinking about the game and then seeing it unfold.
So here are a few things to think about heading into tonite’s Dynamo/ San Jose clash (bad humor) at Robertson Stadium.

* Most likely the last time you see Brian Ching in a Dynamo uniform for awhile. Can’t see him being released by U.S. if selected to come back next Saturday to play vs. Toronto.

* This will be like two runaway trains heading towards each other. Every San Jose player must be on notice to show that they want to be a part of the franchise after their embarrassing loss in New York. For them every tackle, pass and decision is meaningful. Will they come out like lions to fresh meat…..you sure would think so. They hope to be bolstered by the return of last season’s Quakes “defender of the year” Jason Hernandez who has not played an MLS minute this year. San Jose has conceded more goals than any MLS team.

*The biggest question around the Dynamo is at the outside back positions. One would think Andrew Hainault would remain in the lineup but who does coach Dominic Kinnear go with? Mike Chabala who got a start in New York, Craig Waibel or Cory Ashe in the other outside back position?
Now I am not big in to being statistics oriented on soccer but here is a good one. Eddie Robinson, Wade Barrett and Richard Mulrooney who were projected to be starters pretty much at the beginning of the year have a total of 630 games between them. That is alot of experience that will be missing tonite.

* Houston youth product Arturo Alvarez returns and the Dynamo need to be wary of the former Mayde Creek star cutting in on his left foot from the right side.
He scored this way during the Dynamo visit to San Jose back on March 28th. Kind of like Preki in the old days with KC….You know he is going to do it. I caught up with Alvarez
yesterday at Quakes practice and his is up for tonite playing in front of family and friends.

* The middle of the field for San Jose is in question which could be Ramiro Corrales paired with either Simon Elliott or Bobby Convey? They miss Francisco Lima who last year patrolled this area of the field for them and had played in the Serie “A” with Roma. They need a little more prescence in this area and it could be a place that Ricardo Clark and Stuart Holden could thrive tonite.

* You want a bad guy? A villian tonite? You got one! Quake defender Nick Garcia indirectly called out Dynamo forward Kei Kamara as a mental midget in the San Jose Mercury News. The two have history but it is Kamara who has been ejected. If Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear starts Kamara as he has been then the Dynamo striker must reward his trust with emotional control. Keep an eye on this.

*Break out night? Something tells me that this could be the night the Dynamo score more than one goal. They have only produced two goals or more in a game twice this year. Against SJ and NE. Will the goals rain? Lets hope so.

EPL SURVIVAL

What a weekend it is for EPL teams like Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Hull and Sunderland who are all trying to survive in the Premiership on it’s final day. Millions of dollars to be lost if relegated. Fox Soccer Channel will air Manchester United and Hull…Meanwhile the race in Germany is the best in Europe…Wolfsburg with a point today at home against Werder Bremen will secure the Bundesliga title. Nail biting time.

MALDINI LEGEND
Paolo Maldini at 40 years of age plays in his final game at the San Siro for AC Milan against Roma this Sunday. What a career, what an example.
Maldini has always been one of my favorites for his loyalty to his club despite many trying to pry him away with huge money. He has appeared in 900 games in all competitions for AC Milan.

TICKETS, TICKETS…
Get your Dynamo tickets and get out to Robertson Stadium today. McDonald’s 4 pack is only $54 dollars for 4 tickets, 2 chicken sandwhiches and 2 happy meals. Can it be beat? Pick this special up also for the return of Dwayne DeRosario next week and Toronto FC.

FIESTA/TICKETMASTER has incredible deals on both the 2009 World Football Challenge match at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington between Chelsea and Club America.
Get 10% off only at Fiesta Ticketmaster. Also $5 dollars off Gold Cup tickets if you get them early.

See you tonite at the Dynamo post game radio show call in near “autograph” alley outside the Dynamo locker room. Call in number is 713-212-5790…..

You heard it hear first/ Garcia stokes “fire” ahead of Dynamo match

pachuca.jpg

Pachuca will win the Mexican league title!
Ok, not really a stretch but I really enjoy watching this team that has a wealth of attacking riches. Last night they put themselves in the drivers seat heading back home for their second leg on Sunday against Indios of Ciudad Juarez with a 2-0 win.
UNAM Pumas will take on Puebla this Saturday after 2-1 first leg loss at Puebla…

*Indios midfielder Marco Vidal is a little known Mexican-American player from Dallas. He did spend time under FC Dallas coach Colin Clarke when he was in charge on trial.
He was not signed by FC Dallas and ended up at Indios. He is eligible if he gets a call for both the U.S. and Mexican national teams.

* June 3rd U.S. at Costa Rica and Saprissa Stadium which is a place they have never won.
June 6th U.S. at Soldier Field the day after the Dynamo take on the Fire in Bridgeview, Illinois.
June 15th U.S. vs. Italy in Confederations Cup
June 18 U.S. vs. Brazil in Confederations Cup
June 21 U.S. vs. Egypt in Confederations Cup
Are any Dynamo fans heading to Chicago to catch the “Orange” and then stick around for the U.S./ Honduras World Cup qualifier at Solidier Field.
The U.S. roster is expected to be announced in the near future…..

* Luis Figo who won the Italian title with Inter Milan this past weekend has put the “I’m available” sign out with designs on the Chinese Super League, MLS and the “J” League in Japan. Would you want Luis in MLS? I dare you…..

*SO YOU WANT A VILLIAN?…Earthquakes defender Nick Garcia was quoted in the San Jose Mercury News talking about getting into the head of opposing players.
“It’s really priceless,” said Garcia. “Some guys are mental midgets.”
Alot of this one would seem is directed towards Dynamo striker Kei Kamara who Garcia has been involved in altercations with both in pre-season and league play.
Garcia claims that Kamara spit at him while Kamara denies it.
Not sure I would be talking so much after a 4-1 loss in New York but it is clear that Garcia may be using the media to stoke the fires ahead of the Dynamo game.

* Dynamo training yesterday was spirited as they prepare for the San Jose Earthquakes this Saturday at 7:30 pm. Young draft choice Danny Cruz was spirited while Wade Barrett and Eddie Robinson continued re-hab. They have their final session today before an important home clash. Great ticket pricing is available at HoustonDynamo.com including the McDonald’s 4 pack. Check it out and don’t forget the anticipated return of Dwayne DeRosario and Toronto FC just down the road.

*Dynamo on the tube….Dynamo All Access with Glenn Davis the tv show airs Friday night at 9:30pm on KHOU 11.2
The Dynamo game Saturday will air on Fox Sports Houston and KHOU 11.2 KHOU will do a half hour pre-game show. But don’t stay home, tape the game and get out to the stadium! I hope to see alot of the youth players from in and out of town that are playing in Memorial Day Tournaments in Houston out at the Dynamo game Saturday night!

* Ronaldo will face a Brazilian sports tribunal for hair pulling and pinching an opponent. The Corinthians star was caught on camera pulling the hair of Botofago defender Fayel in this past weekends match. Ronaldo has also seen immense support to be brought back in to the national team from fans from which he was excluded along with Ronaldinho for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

* So what do you think of Manchester United not putting the full squad out this Sunday against Hull? It sure seems to be a talking point in England.
I believe United will feel enough of a core that will still make them a difficult side despite the fact that Barca stares at them Wednesday in Rome.

*Should Manchester United player Carlos Tevez stay or go?

Get your tickets for the GOLD CUP and 2009 WORLD FOOTBALL CHALLENGE at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington at FIESTA/TICKETMASTER.
You can save money by getting your tickets early not to mention feel good about having them in hand!!!

Mexican League Playoffs are just fun, fun, fun!

puebla.jpg

*How about the beautiful stadium outside of Mexico City that Puebla plays in? Pretty cool over-hang. Their dream start through a 12th minute goal from defender Alejandro Acosta never materialized into the home result that they desired. Both teams had players ejected in Costa for Puebla and Efrain Juarez for Pumas.
Ultimately Martin Bravo tied it for Pumas who then amazingly won it on the road in stoppage time from Marco Palacios . Palacios scored off a corner for Tuca Ferretti’s squad.
The night had an interesting MLS tie in. Puebla fielded FC Dallas cast-off’s defender Duilio Davino and Ramon Nunez . They also started Colorado Rapids disaster Daniel Osorno whose best years were at Atlas…….Three MLS players? Not to be outdone……UNAM Pumas is still trotting out Paco Palencia who spent time at Chivas USA.
UNAM will close this out this weekend at the Olympic Stadium.
Tonite Indios of Ciudad Juarez will take on Pachuca on Aztec America . The way I see this playing out is Pachuca vs. UNAM Pumas in the final with Pachuca winning the title.
Hey, what a stretch right?
But on another note most of the first leg affairs in Mexican League playoffs have more open play which leads to some entertaining and crazy playoff games. No one defends as consistently deep as they do in a European first leg tie. More fun, fun, fun tonite!

*WILL RIO BE BACK?
Manchester United central defender Rio Ferdinand is in a fitness chase to be healthy for the Champions League final in Rome in 6 days. Ferdinand says he will be ready while manager Alex Ferguson says only if he plays against Hull City this weekend. United have already captured the crown and are expected to rest players in preparation for the showdown with Barcelona.

*UKRAINIAN SQUAD wins the final UEFA CUP
Shaktar Donetsk of the Ukrainian became the first squad from that country to win the UEFA Cup . A second half stoppage time goal from Jadson produced the historic win for Romanian coach Mirea Lucescu 2-1 over Werder Bremen of Germany…..you remember Mirea don’t you? He once coach Inter Milan….

*FINAL CHANCE TO SEE CHA-CHING
If all goes according to plan this Saturday for coach Dominic Kinnear it will be the final chance to catch Dynamo star striker Brian Ching in action against San Jose Saturday night.
Ching is expected to be selected for the U.S. National team that will play two World Cup qualifiers vs Costa Rica (U.S. have never won there) and Honduras at home in Chicago at Soldier Field. He then would head off to the Confederations Cup where the U.S. will play Italy, Brazil and Egypt . Looking forward to these. Expect Ching to want to leave Houston with a few goals Saturday night against the Quakes.

*YOU MAY HAVE PLAYED AGAINST HIM
Quakes midfielder Arturo Alvarez heads in to town this weekend. Arturo grew up playing in Bear Creek Park and who knows …..you might have played against him when he was a kid. Alvarez was a member of FC Dallas in the 2007 playoffs when he was amazingly sent off after an incident with Brad Davis that was game changing.

*REMINDER
Dynamo All Access with Glenn Davis which airs on 790 The Sports Animal goes live next Thursday from Richmond Arms the legendary soccer pub on Richmond Ave. Look forward to seeing a good turn out of Dynamo fans plus EPL fans. DERO returns….
This could be the most anticipated game of the year a week from Saturday…Former Dynamo hero Dwayne DeRosario returns with Toronto FC to take on his former teammates.
This is a mouth watering thought to see him go up against the DYNAMO. The above McDonald’s four pack is in play here as well…..

*I am taking suggestions for the “Houston Area Unsung Soccer Hero ” award which is given out weekly during the radio show. Last weeks winners were former HOUSTON DYNAMOS owners JOHN GAUGHAN and PETE KANE who poured tons of money into professional soccer during tough times. They also brought teams like SHEFFIELD UNITED, LINFIELD of IRELAND, GLENTORAN of IRELAND, the U.S.NATIONAL TEAM, and other international teams to HOUSTON to keep the game alive. Lots of amazing stories about these owners and this team. The DYNAMOS of 1984 lost in a shootout in the USL Finals to FT. Lauderdale whom had former England captain Dave Watson, midfielder Keith Weller and Scottish international Asa Hartford and Peruvian World Cup legend Nene Cubillas.
Email me with your suggestions for those whom have given to our soccer community.

*SMART SOCCER TIPS with GLENN DAVIS which is a campaign to remind youth about giving to the “game” is available at SOCCER TIME in PASADENA.
Pick up one of the cards sponsored by FIESTA which lays out some important tips……..

What other soccer thoughts are on your mind?

The master speaks and more……

cruyff1.jpg

He still remains one of the most interesting thinker in all of soccer so when he talks people listen.
Dutch, Ajax and Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff has taken a shot at the EPL by saying that Champions League domination is because clubs rely on foreign players.
Can you argue this?
Cruyff is a fan of the 6+5 rule which would force teams to play more non-foreigners. He also went on to say that the English National team’s failure is because of an over-reliance on foreign players.
“The English national team, missing out on the last European Championships, and football in general sufffers as a result of them signing so many foreign players. Doing this weakens the competition because it is impossible for every player they sign to play.”
Cruyff also pointed out that Barcelona will field 8 homegrown players in the Champions League Final while Manchester United will only field 2-3.
Are you a fan of the 6+5 rule and do you agree with Cruyff’s comments?

*The last UEFA CUP FINAL takes place today between Shaktar Donetsk Ukraine vs. a Diego-less Werder Bremen of Germany in Istanbul, Turkey.
Next year the competition will be re-branded the Europa League……..Diego is both suspended and hurt.

* Do you want a road trip after the Dynamo vs. San Jose this Saturday night. Head right up higheway 290 to Austin and you can catch the Austin Aztex take on Carolina which includes former Mayde Creek and Hurricanes Soccer Club midfielder Josh Gardner. Gardner spent three years in MLS with the LA Galaxy and won and MLS Cup and ironically is in Texas the same weekend that Arturo Alvarez comes back with San Jose to take on the Dynamo…..

* Tough to be very judgmental on the play of striker Ade Akinbiyi on the turf at Giants Stadium but how about the phantom goal. Akinbiyi’s goal was called back for an apparent foul on Kei Kamara which I quite frankly never saw this past Saturday. Which leads me to the recent blog from MLS commissioner Don Garber which points out the league has made an effort to get former players fast tracked to referee league play. Good luck with that one……

*I saw a recent article on the Colorado Rapids and their new found agressive attacking soccer on the road? Huh…..The Rapids definetly defend deep and counter on the road so I was not really sure where this came from. In Houston they never really tried to play and wide man Colin Clark who I like alot as a player never even took anyone on off the dribble. It was direct play all the way with no build up.
They did the same thing at Columbus….The teams we should be celebrating are those that come out and attack on the road.

*The U.S. National Team will select their squad in the coming days for upcoming World Cup qualifiers and the Confederation Cup. Expect Brian Ching to get the call so this may be your last chance to catch him in action for awhile for the Dynamo. The team will begin camp on Tuesday to prepare for this schedule:
June 3 at Costa Rica World Cup qualifier
June 6 vs. Honduras at Soldier Field
June 15 vs. Italy in South Africa
June18 vs. Brazil in South Africa
June 21 vs Egypt in South Africa

Gold Cup then begins in early July and you can expect a split squad.

Lots of information from the world of soccer sprinkled with a bit of opinion…….

aguirre_spain_soccer_do811.jpg

Here are some thoughts :

*Javier Aguirre for the second go round is now the coach of Mexico again. His preliminary roster for World Cup qualifying in June includes Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Oscar Perez.
Will they stick?

*New York fans can you get a clue? A racous ovation near the tunnel for Jorge Rojas who blatantly elbows an opponent in a selfish act and leaves your team with ten men?
What are you thinking? Applauding stupid play.

* Sore loser. That is the only words you can use to describe the whining Rafa Benitez of Liverpool. Benitez says it is easier for United since they have a deeper pool of resources to produce titles and results. This was the wrong time for this debate Rafa.
With United winning the title EPL the timing of these words from Rafa towards Alex Ferguson and United only make him look a sore loser.

* Stan is living it up at Arsenal. How does it feel to be a Colorado Rapids fan when your owner is barely visible in Colorado but splashed all over the pages of English tabloids in his pursuit of more Arsenal shares. What am I missing here and why is Stan so reluctant to make a real run with the Rapids.

* To Mr. Brian Lewis of the New York Post who wrote this about defender Carlos Johnson in his blog…..’After having his left foot broken by Stuart Holden’.
Huh? Makes it sound like Holden intentionally tried to break his foot. A closer look would have showed Mr. Lewis that poor control from Johnson left him vulnerable to Holden who came in to tackle. Johnson did what many do when their control is poor and that is put his body or leg between the ball and a player and that is when the contact occurred.
To wrap it up….Johnson’s poor control helped lead to his injury and he has more accountability in this then was stated by the blogger.

* Indios vs Pachuca and Pumas vs. Puebla. Should we just annoit Pachuca the champions right now?

* Applaud the bench…..Lets applaud Dynamo subs Cory Ashe and Chris Wondoloski for the goal they produced at the Meadowlands.
When you come on with limited minutes left you are expected to produce, counter a move from an opposing coach, stir up the game if you are losing or carry out a specific tactical
job. This was a professional effort from two bench players who were up for the moment. Ashe in the early stages of MLS struggled with certain areas of his game including his
delivery. Not on this night, his cross was perfect to Wondoloski who beat Alfredo Pacheco to the back post. And as for Wondoloski he deserves kudos for his will to produce off
the bench. He has been knocked down numerous times but won’t go away. Great story this two players and rest assured teams have come knocking for Cory Ashe based on being
left footed, quick and now showing a maturity and professionalism. Credit the club for nurturing him along.

* HOUSTON UNSUNG SOCCER HERO AWARD brought to you by FIESTA……..And the winners are….
Former Houston Dynamo’s owners JOHN GAUGHAN and PETE KANE who sunk countless sums of money in to professional in the eighties. At a time where there was no return this gentleman stuck to their passion. The team played in a league called the UNITED SOCCER LEAGUE and advanced in 1984 to the finals where it lost to the FT LAUDERDALE SUN in a shoot-out at Lockhart Stadium in FT. LAUDERDALE. The squad included players like Bill Irwin (Cardiff City now coach at University of Portland), Manny Andruzewski (Southampton), Brazilian and league MVP Jose Neto, Beto do Santos (Club America and the uncle of Giovanny do Santos), to name a few…..

*Dynamo / San Jose has local ties. Former Houston area youth product Arturo Alvarez who played at Mayde Creek returns to Houston and is expect to have 20+ family and friends at the game Saturday night. More local connection will occur in Austin when the Aztex take on Josh Gardner and Carolina in USL play this Sunday.
Get your Dynamo McDonald’s 4 pack for $54.95 which includes 4 tickets, 2 chicken sandwhiches and 2 happy meals. Now that is a deal! And don’t wait…grab this deal for Saturday and next Saturday when Dynamo legend Dwayne DeRosario returns…

Dynamo share spoils at Meadowlands/ Blanco back/ Man U. EPL Champs

The Dynamo were minutes away from their first ever win at the Meadowlands but end up sharing the points after a late goal from John Wolyniec.
The Dynamo had pieced a beautiful goal together after subs Cory Ashe and Chris Wondoloski connected on a beautiful goal that seemed to have secured the win.
The Dynamo did not manage out the game as planned and after conceding a corner defended it poorly and were equalized by Wolyniec.
The Dynamo pick up a point and now head home for two straight games against San Jose and Toronto.
Give my your thoughts on the pro’s and con’s of the Dynamo at New York.

Some initial general thoughts:
* Brian Ching did not play due to the turf but a niggling injury problem.
* Turf was slick, fast and the usual at Giants Stadium making it hard for anyone to play.
* Dynamo looked the better team but New York became motivated after ejection of Jorge Rojas.
* Dynamo bench strength impactful in this one with Chris Wondoloski and Cory Ashe.
The two pieced together a beautiful goal.
* Game management with the 1-0 lead was suspect late.

Post game sound, analysis tomorrow night on DYNAMO ALL ACCESS WITH GLENN DAVIS at 7pm on 790 The Sports Animal. Hope you will join me and contribute to the show by calling in at 713-212-5790. For more on the Dynamo and Red Bull please go back to the prior blog?

Notes from New Jersey as Dynamo and Red Bulls get closer…

giants_stadium.jpg

It is always a treat for me to come back to New Jersey to where my parents still live.
New Jersey is a great soccer state and has alot of riches and ethnic influence in the sport but they sure don’t come out to Giants Stadium in droves.
The Red Bulls will unveil a 2 million dollar stadium in the future in Harrison, New Jersey with better mass transit connection than currently at Giants Stadium.
Lets just hope the Red Bull organization is not banking on a stadium solving all of their problems.
By the way you can catch the game on KHOU 11.2 with a pre-game show from the Meadowlands and on Fox Sports Houston at 6:30 central time.

For the time being it is the carpet at Giants Stadium and considering the Dynamo are coming in with three straight wins (one on artificial surface in NE) and four straight shut-outs optimism has to be high along with confidence.

The big storyline for the Dynamo is can they win at Giants Stadium and keep their streaks going? And how does the back-line get re-shaped under Dominic Kinnear due to the Richard Mulrooney injury and Wade Barrett still being injured?

Does Julius James, Craig Waibel or Mike Chabala get a run.
Waibel is the veteran, James is the more athletic rookie while Chabala is naturally left footed and could push Hainault to the right side in place of Mulrooney? All different possibilities for the manager.

I am not buying that New York will field the same lineup against the Dynamo.
The Dynamo midfield could see changes from New York…Could Juan Carlos Osorio bring in Khano Smith or Dane Richards to boost their wide play?
I could see Jon Conway getting back in goal to deal with the Dynamo aerial prescence in favor of Danny Cepero.
So why would you change a winning lineup? Because of the opponent of course and Osorio has always been a guy that likes to change a lineup or approach based on an opponent.
I see 1-3 changes for the Red Bulls tomorrow in goal or in midfield.

What do you see out of this game?

MANCHESTER UNITED with a point can wrap up the EPL title this weekend against non other than Arsenal….Your thoughts?

Check out the Houston Chronicle soccer page tomorrow and remember Dynamo All Access with Glenn Davis this Monday on 790 The Sports Animal at 7pm.
