Eddie Robinson situation………Is coming back to MLS the best move for Landon Donovan?

The Eddie Robinson situation has complicated things at the back for the Dynamo.
There is no telling how long he will be out but Dynamo CEO Chris Canetti has said he will be back this season.
Information on exactly what was performed and or corrected in surgery is vague at this point.
As someone who has had knee surgery it sounds as though this is residual damage from the pounding Robinson has taken over the years as a professional though I don’t claim to be a doctor so this is all speculation on my part.
This was foreshadowed as I interviewed Eddie Robinson prior to the first leg of the Concacaf Champions League and this is what he said about his knee and how pre-season has been going for him:

“Slow, my knee is still giving me issues. It acted up at the beginning of last year, I went through the last eight months of the season and did not miss any training or games due to it. After one of the early pre-season games it started acting up again. I have had some shots and am going to get an MRI to see how it is looking. Hopefully, hopefully everything is ok and I can continue playing and after this Atlante game I have to sit out for try to get back in and get back in the mix. It is slow right now but I feel like with the exception of the years I went to the January camp with the national team this is the fittest I have come in to training. I have nothing but high hopes and expectations for this year.”

Former Canadien U20 national team player Andrew Hainault should be the next signing for the Dynamo and one could expect that to be announced in the coming days. Hainault has also represented Canada at the full international level and is looking to establish himself there.
I myself am heading to Austin for the day to check out the Dynamo vs. Austin Aztex match this Saturday night in Austin, Texas. I would expect some Dynamo fans will be making this road trip.
Saturday marks 14 days to the Dynamo opener at Robertson Stadium against the defending MLS champion Columbus Crew.
Amazing ticket packages are available at HoustonDynamo.com…….lets fill the stadium for the opener!!!

So the saga of Landon Donovan at Bayern Munich is officially set to come to an end. The LA GALAXY announced today that Donovan will re-join the Galaxy this Tuesday as his loan deal expires.
So now Donovan and the Galaxy become more than an also ran merely because of his prescence. LA general manager and coach Bruce Arena must be doing cartwheels in that MLS’s number one game changer will don the Galaxy uniform.
“We are looking forward to Landon re-joining the club next week as we continue our final preparations for the 2009 MLS season, including our final pre-season match against the Chicago Fire in Tempe, Arizona,” said Arena. “He is a very important part of our club and will be coming back to us very motivated an fit for the upcoming season.”
The real question remains……Is this the right move for Donovan. I for one was really pulling for him to remain at Bayern Munich in one of the top leagues in the world in a historic club like many of you.
Donovan has done it all in MLS and their is not much left for him to achieve. He has also spent time under Bruce Arena before with the national team. Not sure if their is much more for him to learn and grow from playing in MLS under Arena as opposed to the type of environment in which he just left. An environment that includes pressures that don’t occur in MLS. In fact sometimes you wonder how challenged Donovan seems in MLS where he can routinely turn it on and off. Lets not forget the poor LA team he put on his back under Steve Sampson that won a league title a few years back.
This will be interesting to watch coming into the 2009 season. Definetly a sigh of relief for Arena and the Galaxy. Donovan on any team transforms it.
Donovan made five appearances in the Bundesliga and on DFB Cup appearance without scoring a goal but did prove dangerous off the bench. He scored four goals for the club which all came in friendly matches.
“I am very excited to be returning home to my teammates and the LA Galaxy. I would like to thank Bayern Munich for the opportunity to play with one of the premier clubs in Europe, as well as their coaches and players for welcoming me into the club,” said Donovan. “Although the results were not what we had hoped for , the time in Germany still was very positive for me. I am fit, motivated, and excited to be coming back as a better, more experienced player.”
Do you really think Donovan is excited to be coming back to a league that he has dominated? Especially knowing his desire to stay at Bayern on more than a loan deal? Of course it is the right thing to say but my take is that his Euro experience was too short.
What do you think?
