Give me your thoughts on both the Champions League and the UEFA Cup?
Lots of interesting soccer options this weekend. The Dynamo have a season ticket holder only event as they will play the Montreal Impact on Saturday morning. Montreal comes off a fantastic 2-0 win last night over Santos of Mexico. It leads me to believe that this is a huge opportunity to win this tournament for the Dynamo if they can get past Atlante.
A trip to the World Club Cup would be historic for the Dynamo!
The New England Revolution will be taking on the Austin Aztex up in Austin this Saturday night. I may be headed up to that one also to get a look at the Revolution and Aztex.
Here is a fantastic opportunity provided by FIESTA called the FUTBOL FIESTA. Bring a canned food item to San Jacinto College South Campus at 13735 Beamer Rd. and enjoy a free clinic from the NATIONALLY RANKED SAN JACINTO COLLEGE COYOTES, stick around for a match between the Coyotes and Ligas Unidas.
Hurry up and sign up as this is limited to 200 youth age 6-14.
Register at 281-922-3475 for this great free event SUNDAY from 2-4pm.
The 6+5 rule has the backing of 155 of FIFA’s 208 members and would restrict the amount of foreigners playing in domestic leagues (could you imagine the EPL without foreigners?).
The rule states that at the start of a game a club must field at least 6 players who would be eligible for the national team of a country of the club. There would be no limits on subs so that means at the end of the game it could be eight foreigners on the field thus 8+3.
Essentially if changed it could limit players movement and would be a considered a regression from a player standpoint from the 1995 Bosman ruling which opened the door to player movement in football.
FIFA it seems will continue to challenge the European commission on this ruling and FIFA President Sepp Blatter desperately wants to see this rule instituted by 2012-2013. The European commission is determined to stop him claiming this rule would be discriminatory.
Do you want to see this rule instituted or are you happy with where football is now?
The WPS modeled their new uniforms at a Puma fashion type show. If you saw these what do you think?

Again…. saw a portion of the game last night, and had to openly cuss the Dynamo organization for only opening up Saturday morning’s game vs Montreal to full season ticket holders. This is an international friendly, a borderline exhibition game, against a USL team, and they decided to restrict attendance ? I can’t understand the rationale for that. Anyone want to weigh in ? Seems to me it’s the diehard fans who, for whatever reason, do not purchase a full season ticket package, but walk up on game day and make Robertson what it is. I thought the HDynamo front office was on the right track, but after the Felix Garcia fiasco [you sign a guy who's afraid to fly ???], the lack of front office involvement in the CONCACAF game Tuesday night [no t-shirts shot out of a cannon at halftime, no Dynamo girls dancing, etc.] and now this, I’m beginning to have my doubts.
ALSO…. where’s the chatter about the stadium ?
Whoa, Christopher…relax bro…good stuff though.
Godspeed, Dynamo!
No T-Shirts shot out of a cannon and lack of Dynamo Girls make you wonder about the FO? Really? I better leave that topic alone….
Anyway, the 6+5 rule could change some of the player business aspects for sure but even if passed will probably lead to more domestication of foreign players. Just look around how many Brazilians are already on some National teams other than Brazil and you can see a potential trend. Landon is done and will be back at the end of his loan. For fan happenings in Germany check out http://www.bundesligatalk.com and you will find out about some good and not so good ways to support your club.
Christopher,
As far as the FO “involvement” at the Atlante game. I believe there are strict rules during these int’l games about stuff like that. No dancers/cheerleaders. No halftime field entertainment. I dont think they were even supposed to show replays on the jumbo screen. I’ve noticed the past 3 years that any superliga, champions cup, etc games that they will show live action on the jumbo tron, but will not show any replays except for a goal. No tackles, offside, etc.
I think it is to try and keep down any home field advantage that might be gained. Especially when the field and stadium conditions can vary between the US, Canada, Mexico and central america.
I’m well pleased Glenn that Chelsea worked Juve. Headed to Torin w/o giving up an away goal is a good position to be in. I still can’t believe Liverlucky beat Madrid. Absolutely unbelievable. I don’t see inter beating ManUre at Old Trafford but Sir Alex didn’t score an away goal and he is vulnerable against a sound offensive side.
I have a different take on the 6-5 rule. While this may be intended to help domestic leagues by “forcing” more domestic players into their given squads, this means access to the international talent pool will shrink overnight. If that happens, the recent progress Americans have made going overseas will come to a grinding halt. This is a hypothetical but why would Fulham want Deuce if Arsenal are forced to drop Fabregas or Rozicky for 6-5 and Fulham can get them instead?
Most US players are getting through and making it on the outer fringe but what if the outer fringe makes way for talent from the inner circle?
OK, let me get this out of the way right now by saying I am 100% male and I don’t apologize for it. In fact I revel in it so here goes. I would just like to say that the girls that are playing in the new woman’s league are absolutely stunning and fetching in my opinion so I would like to see tighter, shorter, shorts and tighter and much lower cut jerseys. If you need to see or understand what I’m talking about just go to Hooters and have a look. I mean those hard bodied babes of the new WPS would put those Barbies at Hooters to shame. I guarantee you they could take them in a wrestling match as well. And yes, I would pay good money to see that as well! The girls are are fit and gorgeous and shouldn’t be ashamed of using it!
Larry and I would get along quite well I think.
Concacaf controls the games at Robertson for their competition and it is my understanding that the Dynamo are restricted in things they can do. Seems silly not to let the local team add more of their flavor but I can see Concacaf wanting “their control” over the event.
Larry could you please make your point a little clearer…:)
As for the season tickets for the Dynamo after putting thought into this I think it is fair for them to reward those that are shelling out for season tickets to give them an event of their own and additional benefit.
I have no problem with this.
I do like the way some Mexican teams open the gates for one designated game to “unveil” their squad.
FYI Dynamo season tickets are a tremendous value, inexpensive and they even will finance your season tickets monthly.
Excellent effort and value from the Dynamo, none better in Houston.
Glenn, you didn’t mention the Tottenham v Shakhtar match. I expected more from my Spurs (no matter how hard it is to be a Spurs fan at the moment). Gio Dos Santos scored his first goal in a Spurs jersey. A great shot off his left foot. I like him on the wing but he’s still young. I won’t be surprised to see him leave Tottenham before long.
As a STH, I admit I am biased. I think it is good for the Dynamo FO to provide a perquisite for the STH such as this. I, and others ponied up the $ and committment for the team and I think a little reward for that is a good thing. I really liked the parking gratis last year, but the stars aligned just so for that to occur. I realize not everyone has the $300 to drop on ST, just like not everyone can afford an EZ tag for the toll-road, but membership doth have its reward. Special events for ST and relatively quicker commutes for toll-road users. But I also realize that when I added all handling fees accrued after that first season, ST were only a short stretch away. I got the EZ tag when I realized I could save 25 cents off the normal fare. Economics at work. An individual should weigh what each $ means to them and spend it accordingly. You want a signed jersey and access to special events, become a STH. You want flexibility to pick and choose which games to attend because you may have an inflexible schedule, go per game basis.
Just my 2 cents (and I chose to spend them here – still no handling fee to post here, right Glenn?)
I think the 6+5 rule is a great thing. When I watch a German team, I like to see Germans. When I watch a Cameroonian team, I like to see Cameroonians. I believe that people in every country appreciate seeing there countrymen in the game. That’s one of the reasons the MLS is popular. As far as Americans getting into Europe, wren, why should we want that? I want the best American players in MLS.
Larry, although my baser instincts agree with you, come on, give the girls a chance. They are athletes and want to be seen for their skills, not their bodies. Call me a prude, but I really find it distateful when athletes such as beach volleyball players, track & field, etc. are forced to wear bikinis as uniforms. This is a sign of our society’s declining moral standards.
