The notorious British press doesn’t get many points for integrity.
THE DAILY MAIL has reportedly forked over a substantial sum of money to Italian Defender Marco Materazzi due to a false claim that Materazzi used a vile racist insult towards French captain Zinedine Zidane during the 2006 World Cup final that led to the infamous “head butt”.
The libel case was settled in London and the newspaper admitted fabricating the story. Form July to December the daily mail printed articles on it’s website also claiming that Materazzi called Zidane “the son of a terrorist whore”. A claim that Materrazzi steadfastly refused he said. Nor did Zidane ever say Materazzi used those words.
The DAILY MAIL newspaper accepted that all of the allegations were wholly untrue and there was no question of Materazzi saying anything of a racist nature to Zidane to goad him.
The DAILY MAIL said that it offered its apologies for the distress and embarrasment caused.
HOW IS THAT FOR IRRESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM…….?
