So here we go with a few interesting notes from the world of soccer:
INJURIES TAKE FRONT AND CENTER STAGE:
Some high profile injuries could play a part in the success of some of England’s top teams. First CHELSEA striker DIDIER DROGBA has suffered suspected knee injury in the Chelsea 0-0 draw with CFR CLUJ yesterday. Sad thing is DROGBA who hails from the IVORY COAST had just come back from knee surgery. The 30 year old will have a scan today.
Will it be SALOMON KALOU to the rescue for the blues if DROGBA has a lengthy stay off the pitch.
MANCHESTER UNITED will also lose PAUL SCHOLES for a lengthy time period while a scare of injury to WAYNE ROONEY and his ankle against AALBORG has been ruled out and he will be deemed fit for ENGLAND’s next qualifiers against KAZAKHSTAN (the home of ALI G aka BORAT) and BELARUS four days later……
The Champions league in Europe reminds us that the road is difficult for even the biggest teams and most star laden teams in the world. Compare that to when MLS teams play in Concacaf on the road and the U.S. National team plays away.
FAIR PLAY?
The issue of fair play came up when STUART HOLDEN of the DYNAMO laid prone injured after a tackle. Many thought that UNAM PUMAS should have put the ball out of play in the vein of FIFA FAIR PLAY. Yet UNAM pressed forward and scored what proved to be a vital goal from DANTE LOPEZ. Should they have put the ball out? Maybe? Yet the real moral of the story here is that the DYNAMO stopped playing which even CRAIG WAIBEL admitted on my radio show last night (DYNAMO ALL ACCESS WITH GLENN DAVIS WEDNESDAYS 7-9pm CST).
Lesson learned, keep playing and don’t assume anyone will put the ball out of play. Which leads me to an incident in this week’s SHAKTAR DONETSK and BARCELONA Champions League match. SHAKTAR manager MIRCEA LUCESCU (once manager of Inter Milan) criticized BARCELONA for less than fair play during the sequence that led to their 87th minute tying goal. The UKRAINIANS put the ball out of play so an injured player could be attended to but never got in back on the ensuing throw in from BARCELONA.
The sequence led to the tying goal and BARCA ultimately won dramatically 2-1.
GAME OF THE DAY: San Jose looks to get back on track against an FC DALLAS squad that has scored 7 goals in two games. Former FC Dallas member ARTURO ALVAREZ looks to have a big game at PHP.
QUESTION OF THE DAY? Does the DYNAMO 4-4 draw at UNAM Pumas signal that a win is not far away in MEXICO for an MLS team or is it that the DYNAMO are just better than everybody in MLS in international competition?
DYNAMO HURRICANE RELIEF WEEK: In conjunction with METHODIST HOSPITAL and AMIGO ENERGY the Houston Dynamo will host Hurricane relief week.
The idea here is to help local youth players that have been devasted by Hurricane Ike by donating used soccer equipment at Dynamo home games October 12 vs. DC, October 15 vs San Jose and October 18th vs. the LA GALAXY. Receiving areas will be at the stadium for fans to bring equipment and most families have equipment that there sons or daughters have outgrown. Lets help those less fortunate.
