Dynamo blasted in New Jersey 3-0

redbulls.jpg

The New York Red Bull continued their hot streak defeating the Dynamo 3-0 today a game you could have seen on Telefutura.
The afternoon game took place on the artificial surface at Giants Stadium and for me was almost unwatchable on television with the lines and NFL logos all over the field. The Red Bull put together another solid performance and deserved their win.
Goals from JUAN PABLO ANGEL in the 8th minute, DANE RICHARDS in the 26th and MIKE MAGEE in the 60th provided the difference.
ANGEL produced a powerful header off a DAVE VAN DEN BERG cross. This combination is one of the better options the RED BULLS have. Simply good crossing and finishing. ANGEL had a run at the delivery with DYNAMO defenders glued to the ground.
RICHARDS is a former SAN JACINTO COMMUNITY COLLEGE player and scored his first goal of the year after getting in behind captain WADE BARRETT to make it 2-0 off a long ball from SETH STAMMLER.
Goal number three came from a 55 yard ball from the left back position that caught EDDIE ROBINSON and MIKE MAGEE beat him and PAT ONSTAD for the final goal.
DYNAMO resume practice on TUESDAY and will entertain CUAUHTEMOC BLANCO and the CHICAGO FIRE on SUNDAY night.

What do you take out of the Dynamo loss at New York.

Arena to LA….what does this mean?

arena_b.jpg

I for one am disappointed that RUUD GULLIT didn’t work out in MLS. The league needed the profile of a former world class player to make good in MLS and give it a different perspective. So does this mean that coaches from outside of our country without the willingness to learn the structure of the sport in the states will always fail?
A short look at history shows you the foreign coaches that have failed: Carlos Alberto Parreira, Frank Stapleton, Walter Zenga, Carlos Queiroz, Hans Westerhof to name a few.
So now Bruce Arena is back in LA hopefully with “fire in his belly” like the collegiate coach he was trying to prove himself in the early years of the league. The clear and simple route to becoming a head coach in MLS these days is to have been involved in the early years or to become an assistant and learn the ropes. Lets hope that some fresh coaches will make it on the scene in MLS.
Ones that are willing to take risks with attacking players and find the balance of winning and producing teams that can play the game in a way that puts fans in seats. With job security on the line you can clearly see the limits that coaches put out there. Conservatism in style of play does not put people in seats……Ten games to go in MLS so buckle up your seat belts because this will get good over the final few months…..

EPL
Liverpool 2 Middlesbrough 1 Gerrard game winner.
Stoke over Aston Villa EPL “newbie” gets the result
Sunderland 2 Spurs 1 Key points for Sunderland
Everton 2 West Bromwhich 1 Toffees on top
Newcastle 1 Bolton 0
Hull 1 Blackburn Promoted Hull earn a point

HDNET MLS action tonite features the streaking SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES against CHIVAS USA who are in dire trouble after the pounding from the HOUSTON DYNAMO this past week. Huge injury problems and three out of the next four on the road could spell doom.
The only bright note is that Sacha Kleijstan returns tonite for the “Goats”. San Jose gets this win tonite .
Darren Huckerby , Francisco Lima, Arturo Alvarez and Scott Sealy make this team competitive.

*On another note NICK DOIZE who plays at TEXAS PREMIER played today for his club. NICK has been battling cancer and is an example to all of us. Great to see Nick again lead the way with his bravery….a lesson to all!

*Did you even expect Eddie Lewis to get up and walk off the field under his own power on Wednesday night in Guatemala?
Yet he did and is ready to help the GALAXY make a late run at the playoffs.

So what was the real message in Central America?

mateo2.jpg

So we have all weighed in on Central America and the U.S. 1-0 win over Guatemala which I will mention for the 30th time is the FIRST time the U.S. have ever won a World Cup qualifier in Guatemala. For those of you who are so intense about “friendly” games. I can only say please stop factoring in these results. In fact if we never use the word “friendly” again I would certainly be happy.
So what did we learn in Central America? Or did you truly believe the U.S. were going to play “free flowing” dominant football? I only wish we could bottle up fans and put them in the environment to truly realize the other intangibles that go along with these games.. Poorly lit fields, archaic stadiums (yes it is respectfully a third world country and insfrastructure is poor) a once in a “blue moon” visit from a team from the United States whom most in Guatemala only read about. Two thousand police officers looking clearly less than half my age toting rifles where in and around the facility. Oh, and a team that clearly morphs into something else in it’s idigenous environment and plays with more determination than ever.
Does anyone reflect on the 9 players that have played for Guatemala in MLS. Did Pando Ramirez ever put that effort in while playing for LA? (I think not, amazingly he did not get a yellow card for kicking every U.S. player over 90 minutes). With nationalistic pressure on these players combined with all these other aforementioned elements you can see why these teams become more difficult opponents.
Did the U.S. struggle through parts of this game? You bet! Were they expected to struggle during parts of this game ? You bet! Did they through fate and effort get through this difficult parts…maybe along with some luck? You bet! Did they overcome adversity and put themselves in a position to win? You bet!
And thanks to one set piece you take three points for the first time ever…..I hope that we still are not blind to the challenges and the differences in structure and passion that exists in football between the United States and Guatemala. Few if covered the significance of this game in the U.S. in mainstream media. Is the mainstream media ignorant (I say this respectfully) to what happened in Guatemala on Wednesday night…..absolutely. When is the last time an NBA, NFL or MLB team played in an environment with a true edge. And edge the goes over the border of personal safety?
Great result…..and great that people are judging and talking about the U.S. National team.

Congratulations to the WOMENS NATIONAL team who take the GOLD after opening up with a 2-0 loss to NORWAY. Sweet revenge against BRAZIL and now we will see if this momentum can turn into increased attention on the womens game and a new professional league?

Your thoughts all around.

The atmosphere in Guatemala

061003_us_national_soccer_logo.jpg

The atmosphere here in Guatemala is like a soup simmering. National team jerseys are seen on people walking the streets near the hotel I am staying in which houses the U.S. National team.
Cars drive by with flags and the colors of Guatemala painted on it with predictions of scorelines.
Do we understand the significance of this game to this country? Mainstream sports, probably not.
I would imagine little has been mentioned on this game in the Houston area both on radio and tv. We still don´t get it and still have limited vision…..not complaining but it its reality.
By the way Brian Ching a local player for the Dynamo is here in Guatemala and will start if you want a storyline in a country that is thirsting for a win over big, bad America.
Which leads me to how hospitable the people of Guatemala are….and also leads me to the importance of the impression that we as Americans make in foreign countries. Respect.
It is pretty simple….this should be an exciting night tonite and Carlos Ruiz despite his limited action and production in MLS is being counted on heavily as a national hero to his country-men. I question his fitness as he has only appeared in 10 games and mainly as a late sub, he also apparently but not confirmed is moving to Toronto.
Landon Donovan it appears will start out wide in midfield on the road to control that area. The weather is expected to be rainy and you will see less promotion on ESPN tonite so the focus should really be on the game ….. Remember a draw on the road is positive yet it would be nice to see the U.S. begin to win on the road in Concacaf where opposing teams have a habit of playing out of their skin!
See you Friday night on the Dynamo Soccer Report with Glenn Davis on channel 55 at 9:30PM and Monday night on Dynamo All Access on 790 the Sports Animal at 7pm.

Scoop from Guatemala/ Dynamo host Chivas

The first real test of Concacaf qualifying comes for the United States tonite. The roster is one of experience and familiarity which makes a difference in a game of this nature. Manager Bob Bradley has made it clear that this is not the type of game for experimentation.
Most expect this game to start off very quickly with the Guatemalan crowd feeding their national squad. Despite rough times in MLS as of late Carlos Ruiz is the bona fide star for Guatemala but how long can he really go? Apparently he has been moved now to Toronto FC making way for the Galaxy to acquire Eddie Lewis whom should I would think start tonite for the U.S. as should Brian Ching.
As for the broadcast position tonite at Estadio Mateo Flores, it is the most precarious I believe I have ever been involved in. Scaffolding but slip off this thing and go off the railing and it is over. Should be fun!! Game kicks off at 9pm on ESPN 2. Your thoughts on the U.S. and Guatemala.

Dynamo will have to do it without key players tonite but Chivas USA is beaten up and missing players as well. Dynamo pick up 4 points in the next to games and they are looking good positionally in the west. Don´t forget to add to the mix the Concacaf Champions League which is right around the corner. Hope Robertson rocks tonite!

Balance of power shifts in both the East and West

winner.jpg

The DYNAMO’s five star exhibtion of goal-scoring produced a 4-3 win over Real Salt Lake and now places them in first place in the Western Conference.
How quickly things have changed since the confidence building of the Superliga. Next up is a depleted CHIVAS USA on Wednesday night at Robertson Stadium.
Midfielder Jesse Marsch is out with a broken jaw which will put the balance of their midfield in jeopardy.
Over in the EAST NEW ENGLAND was destroyed by SAN JOSE who are a new team with Darren Huckerby, Arturo Alvarez, Scott Sealy and Francisco Lima.
Lima is a bit under the radar screen but the Brazilian has played over 80 games for ROMA in Italy and is solid. The squad under FRANK YALLOP has a long way to go but is pressing teams and playing with more confidence than the passive bunch we had seen up to the point of the signings. This team is now competive and HUCKERBY tormented a depleted REVS all night long………What about the Ricardo Clark blast? Stunning!

Olympic semis and finals this week on mens and womens side and US MEN in action in Guatemala on Wednesday .
