I love the concept of the tournament. Some many call it contrived, but what tournament isn’t in its second year? You have to start somewhere.
Many say it is just about the money, but what soccer tournament isn’t these days, even down to the youth level to some extent? Don’t think the Champions League in Europe is about money? Think again.
Can a profitable and credible tournament catering to high-quality soccer be created? The answer is yes, but it won’t happen without improvement from year to year.
The creation of the SuperLiga tournament was a masterstroke, helping to connect MLS to the passionate soccer culture of Mexico.
Who can deny that MLS teams’ emotions were provoked by their Mexican opponents? It is apparent that the MLS clubs rose to the occasion. In fact, in the case of the Dynamo, it has helped to jump-start them into league form.
But don’t be fooled — Mexican teams want to win this tournament, and the standard excuse that “we are in preseason” has grown tired. Enter and you are accountable.
