It was a game of two halves as DC United and NE tied 2-2 at Gillette Stadium on MLS Prime Time Thursday last night.
Marcelo Gallardo, Jaime Moreno , Fred helped United control the first half and produce a 1-0 halftime lead.
If not for the stellar goalkeeping of Matt Reis United may have gone into the locker room up 3-0.
Fred produced an early second half goal to make it 2-0 but a tactical change from NE head coach helped to change the course of the game.
Nicol brought Adam Cristman into the game for Wells Thompson. Sainey Nyassi was moved into his more comfortable midfield role from the striker position and the Revs responded with goals from Cristman and Kheli Dube.
Is DC United turning the corner?

*Sources tell me the Revolution are earnest in their desire to build a soccer specific stadium.

* Jaime Moreno was clearly upset late in this match when substituted out but showed fire throughout his time on the field for United.

*How much room did NE give Marcelo Gallardo in the first half. If not for Reis, NE would have been out of this game at halftime. So in a nutshell, great goalkeeping kept them in a position to remain in the game and then a good tactical decision from Nicol helped to change the game.

ON TO THE DYNAMO

The Dynamo will be short-handed this weekend when they take on the New York Red Bulls.
Eddie Robinson is suspended after receiving a red card against FC Dallas on Wednesday. Wade Barrett is injured and both Dwayne DeRosario and Pat Onstad will be away with Canada to take on Brazil .
Ricardo Clark will be back from playing 75 or so minutes for the U.S. against England.
What lineup do the Dynamo bring out against the Red Bulls who come off a 5-1 dismantling against the Chicago Fire.

  1. Hey, Glenn, you mentioned in your ESPN show that Beckham won GOTW, but, according to MLS and the fans, Tom McManus of Colorado won it. What’s up?

  2. Will your radio show be at the Maple Leaf Pub next Monday per the Dynamo E-News email? I thought you had a longer string of shows at the Stag’s Head?

  3. Glenn - What do you think of FIFA’s 6+5 rule? My initial reaction is disappointment because I enjoy seeing the best players from around the world playing in the EPL. I think it makes sense in a league in a growth phase, like the MLS, but not so much with the established top flight leagues (EPL, La Liga, etc). I’m certainly not in tune with all the issues, so I would be curious to hear your perspective.

    Thanks, John

  4. If it were not for Matt Reis it could have been 3 or 4 for DC going in to the half. DC was swarming the net, very fluid. It is hard to believe they are sitting at the bottom of the East…not for long I would assume.

As for the Dynamo, having a hard time envisioning a line-up. This could be a high scoring affair. This might be a good time to try some young legs and run the Red Bull into the ground and see how there Houston summertime conditioning is.

  5. Sort of makes one cringe to know Eddie and Onstad will not be in the back this weekend. Not to mention Barrett and DeRo. Coach will have to pull a good one from his bag of tricks to get a tie this weekend.

  6. Well this is when they put it together last year, everybody away for NT duty, and the youngsters played as if there life depended on it. Time to pull out the same speech this year coach. Let the kids have a go. Also make sure to loosen up your neck before the game with Ashe and Dane Richards lots of speed back and forth down the side, should be an entertaining game. Time for Ching to get it together before argentina call-ups, I smell two (lets go boys)
