  1. So will Onstad miss all of the next four games with the Canadian national team?

  2. Glenn, you are my LAST hope buddy. You were the first and foremost flagbearer in bringing this club we all love to this city. I hope I am not asking the impossible of you as a Chronicle staffwriter, but how can we get this city council and mayor to get moving on this stadium deal? I know that when Oliver or anyone says anything to the media or sends a letter to Mayor White, we get political posturing in return. Is this subject TABOO on your radio show? This club is a model franchise and this mayor and city council seems to be only exploiting their cooperativeness now for three years. What do you think? Is there anything you can do? AEG’s unwillingness to get us a DP upfront (obviously a dire need)and sale to a majority owner I think may have a lot to do with the stadium limbo.

  3. What’s even more mind-blowing is where the ball bounces on the way to the goal. Line-to-line. I’ve never seen that before.

  4. So why exactly is this a great goal? No keeper. Many players in the league could have scored that. It did not decide the game. Defenders were stupid — not realizing that with Hartman out pressure on the ball must be applied immediately. This goal demonstrates our biggest weakness in MLS — lack of tactical acumen. So why is this a great goal? Just because Beckham scored it?

BTW — please don’t accuse me of being anti-Beckham. I think he’s great for the league and generally rate him higher as a player than most.

  5. Why is it a great goal? Please Don Juego.
One it is a rarity, two to hit a ball 70 yards straight down the middle of the goal in front of 20,000 fans after a great performance is pretty amazing.
Tactical acumen? I love the fact that KC sent Hartman forward to create confusion off the corner. Having called the game the fans loved it and what is the difference between losing2-1 or 3-1.
The goal was special also in the context of the evening.
Scoring that goal was not easy.

  6. I agree - it was a great goal. People forget how many times during an MLS or even EPL weekend that a high-paid striker flubs a shot on a goal (or even open goal) from 6 to 10 years out. (Unfortunately I’ve seen Arsenal’s Emmanuel Adebayor do it more times than I care to remember this year.) This was 70 frickin’ yards away, and many players would have a hard time, in the heat of the moment, just getting a shot like that on goal.

    It was a great goal.

  7. Glenn,
We have just returned from a trip to Britain and wanted to let you know that walking down Oxford Street in London, there were Beckham and Herbalife jerseys hanging from street vendor stalls and shop fronts alongside Fabregas, Gerard, Ronaldo, Rooney, et. al. We even saw a guy walking past the Lanesborough Hotel (although possibly not staying at the Lanesborough) wearing a Herbalife jersey. There is a Beckham effect and it is great exposure for MLS. Beckham has made a positive impact on MLS…long may it last. And that was a fantastic goal, I’d love to see one of our boys pull it off…Robertson would go mad!
On another note, I was disappointed in Continental’s landing intro video on Houston. They mention the city’s “Five major sporting teams: Astros, Rockets, Comets, Aeros and Texans”…not one mention of the Dynamo, shameful. Aren’t they supposed to be a partner? Maybe it is an old video but they should update it PRONTO.

  8. Beckham’s goal was very impressive. It’s one that any great player should be able to do without a keeper to beat. As Gullit said “If he would have missed, his reputation would have been gone.”

It was reminiscent of the halfway line shocker DeRosario pulled off at Toyota Park in 2006. Beck’s had the advantage of being from longer range; DeRo’s had the advantage of coming from excellent vision of the GK’s positioning and still getting it past the keeper. Both benefitted from low pressure, but at least the Fire thought their keeper had the frame covered. Donjuego is correct that KC’s defense should have pressured Becks, knowing their own keeper was in the attacking third.

I’m no Dallas fan, but Oduro’s game winner this weekend could be GOTW for sheer drama’s sake. How about McManus’ goal for the Rapids? In terms of skill and precision, few could beat that long range strike to the upper 90. That strike had DeRo written all over it and it gets my vote for best goal.

It sure would be nice to see some strikes like these from our Men In Orange. Ching’s wasn’t bad last week versus San Jose, but it was too little too late.

  9. Scoring a goal from that distance and with that accuracy in a high-pressure situation has an extremely high degree of difficulty. I’ve seen guys from the best leagues in the world miss a ’sitter’ with no goalkeeper in front of them. Truly a remarkable feat by Mr. Beckham.

  10. Not to mention that most would not even have attempted it.
Can’t take this one away from the man and I find it ludicrous that some would not appreciate this goal?
Makes me really wonder….it doesn’t have to be your favorite but it has to be appreciated.
Most players would not even have had the confidence to attempt it…it was special.
