A look at the Dynamo and Chivas plus this weekend in MLS

mls-badge.jpg

Both the DYNAMO and CHIVAS USA come into this game looking to eliminate mistakes that have been costly.
Amazingly the Dynamo have no goals between the pair of Dwayne DeRosario and Brian Ching and Chivas USA have conceded a league leading 13 goals and have been all over the place defensively.

Chivas USA are without Swiss International RAFAEL WICKY who injured his ankle in training. Dynamo without BRAD DAVIS who injured his groin in training on Thursday and this is troubling because his entire career has been dogged by injury. Davis is truly one of the most skilled American players out there but injury is something that is associated with that skill far to often.

EDDIE ROBINSON serves the final game of his three game suspension but would not have been playing anyway with his knee injury which he began to test in training today.

MATCH UPS TO WATCH : LAWSON VAUGHAN AND SASHA KLEJSTAN VS. STUART HOLDEN AND WADE BARRETT
Holden has not been at his sharpest off the bench and this game is a big one for him against red hot
Klejstan . Both Holden and Klejstan like to go central so when they do on the attack can Barrett and
Vaughan get forward?

BORNSTEIN AND MENDOZA VS. MULROONEY AND MULLAN
Mendoza also likes to come inside which may a times means Mullan can exploit the right side
if found early in transition. Bornstein can get up and down with the best of them.

BOSWELL AND IANNI VS. GALINDO AND RAZOV
Smaller dimensions of Robertson helps to control Galindo but the man can fly against a back line
that needs to keep this two in front of them by denying the turn. Razov can check back in midfield
get turned and finish with his power. Chivas USA welcomes his return for his ability to hold the ball
up front.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Chivas goalkeeper BRAD GUZAN-last years MLS goalkeeper of the year had an offer from Celtic in Europe .
He comes off a shaky performance in the Superclasico against the LA Galaxy.

BRIAN CHING- does not have a confident air around him these days having failed to score in his last 8
games for the Dynamo. His relationship up front with Franco Caraccio is still a work in progress and he
clearly misses the pace of Joseoph Ngwenya whose style created more space for Ching and others.
Could Chivas USA and home fans be his 2008 break out game?

CLAUDIO SUAREZ- Legendary Mexican defender will be glad to get off the large HDCenter surface and on to
smaller Robertson Stadium.

WHAT TO EXPECT….The Dynamo will come out as always looking to impose themselves on a team that was hit for five goals during the Landon Donovan show this past weekend. The idea is a good one to put a less than confident squad and goalkeeper under pressure early. THE DANGER- while being agressive and committing forward early the Dynamo have to be conscious of the speed of MAYKEL GALINDO on the counter attack. The Dynamo need the game’s first goal.

Other MLS games:

CHICAGO AT NE- Blanco road show in NE with the Revs finding a way to win without Twellman and Ralston.

KC at Columbus- Claudio Lopez and KC need games first goal or expect a deep defending Sigi game plan.

LA at RSL- Donovan and Beckham on the fake stuff, what type of response comes from RSL after giving up 4 at DC.

FC Dallas at San Jose- Earthquakes still trying to figure out how to score goals…Alvarez and Cooper need to produce road goals

DC at Colorado- Are United finding their way after busy schedule? Christian Gomez of Colorado has been non-existent in last two games. Former team in United should motivate. Gomez vs. Gallardo.

The DYNAMO AND CHIVAS USA have played some memorable games at Robertson Stadium.
Chivas USA have never won at Robertson and last season under Preki basically played with 11 players throughout the season.
A real sense of familiarity with their starting 11 but in the playoffs they crashed and burned especially up front where they had injury problems with Maykel Galindo and Ante Razov and they did not have the depth ultimately losing to Kansas City which then gave the Dynamo home field advantage in the Western Conference playoffs.
They added Alecko Eskandarian, Attiba Harris, Raphael Wicky (Swiss Int and former Bundesliga player at Hamburg and in Spain with Atletico Madrid) and Chris Pozniak from Toronto.
There was rumor that ANTE RAZOV was being shopped around the league.
So where does this leave Chivas USA?

PREKI is in an unfamiliar area where he is having to come up with ideas for a team that is struggling in a number of areas in his second year. Is JESSE MARSCH and CLAUDIO SUAREZ showing signs of age? Is Razov motivated? Against LA they were stretched as a team, made numerous mistakes both individually and as a team and have faded in the latter stages of games. That said they have some young talent in Sasha Klejstan, Francisco Mendoza and Jonathan Bornestein.

This is an interesting evening as I am interested to see the reception the Dynamo get at Robertson after being on the road.
Talking to Dynamo officials at training today the crowd should be in the high teens, sure would be nice to hit the 20,000 mark.
This squad needs a boost from its fans at a time that momentum must be gathered not only for the result at hand but in the eyes of Houston and in the media with the stadium issue in the forefront. Yes , this game has additional meaning.
The players also are expecting to feed off the fans so as to find their game.
Training has included tons of finishing work with the Dynamo working on three man patterns of play in and around the goal this week and I plan on watching their session on Friday. (took in the session today and again tons of finishing work yet I would say the Dynamo did not look all that sharp which may mean absolutely nothing come tomorrow)
To be fair THE DYNAMO have not hit all cyclinders and then if you look at the last three games in KC, LA and Columbus. You could make strong arguments for the Dynamo winning all of these games not at their best.

It pained me to watch highlights of Pachuca winning over Saprissa because with a full lineup and no injury issues I still believe Houston is a better team than Saprissa. For that matter I just wanted an MLS team to get to the world club championships.
Lets hope MLS evaluates how they can put their teams in the best position to truly make a run at these things because without this it is hard to compete with the resources of Pachuca.

PREDICTION: Dynamo first win of the year over Chivas on Saturday night . Suppport your club.
The game can also be seen on HDNET or direct kick package and Shep Messing the former New York Cosmos goalkeeper will join me in the booth.
See you at the stadium . Do you want to give me your prediction for Saturday night?
