Figo to Houston, are you kidding?

Inter Milan’s Luis Figo is 35 years old and out with a broken leg. Does this really sound like a smart acquisition for an MLS team?
Now I know Football Italia magazine said that there is interest for him to be signed by an AEG MLS team. Lets look at this from an AEG team perspective if Figo would be a good purchase.

Chicago Fire: So you are going to play with a midfield that includes both Cuahutemoc Blanco and Luis Figo. Please…..Chicago’s next coach has the huge challenge of finding a way to play with Blanco over the course of an entire season. I predict it will be more difficult for the Fire over the course of a whole season with CB. So how do you hide to aging midfielders in a league as athletic in midfield. Remember how Bruce Arena and the New York Red Bulls attempted to play with an older midfield of Claudio Reyna, Dave Van Den Berg, Markus Schopp. It didn’t work, ultimately Dane Richards and Seth Stammler provided the legs and work ethic .

LA Galaxy: How does this team get Figo, only if he took a monster pay cut and was looking for a new lifestyle.
Yes MLS is trying to help LA as much as possible to showcase Beckham and our version of “Team Hollywood”….Again you have the issue of trying to control midfield with two aging superstars. Can’t see it.

Houston Dynamo: Must we even talk about this. It won’t happen and we have gone through this DP issue before. The Dynamo are the defending champions, they have won the Cup twice with the American player and will not be ready to dis-assemble this team to work in Luis Figo. More interesting is what will the Dynamo do with the rights to Ramiro Corrales who is coveted by Dominic Kinnear. Can they find a way to get him in the squad. Corrales is versatile and these types of players will be needed again in the upcoming year to balance national team call-ups, international competition and MLS play. Additionally I see Stuart Holden and Patrick Ianni making the Olympic team for Peter Nowak.

Happy New Year to all, 2008 is going to be a beauty.
