MLS playoffs structure/Interliga to Houston/ Rome “Derby” Wednesday

Filed under: Uncategorized — glenndavis @ 9:19 pm

First lets talk the MLS playoffs.
The first game of these two games series are clearly conservative with fear gripping most of the team involved. The scorelines are indicative of what we expected with NE/NY tying 0-0, Chivas USA losing 1-0 at KC, Chicago defeating DC 1-0 and the Dynamo losing 1-0 at FC Dallas.
Three goals scored in four games, all goals come off mistakes and only one comes from the run of play.
Two of the goals are plays where defenders fail to attack the ball in the air and let it drop to opponents who score.
So predictably things will get more open in game two with a sense of urgency to score goals built in.
Ok on to the Interliga which will come back to Houston on January 5th with Mexican League clubs Cruz Azul taking on Monterrey and San Luis taking on UNAM. Now I don’t want to sound negative here and I know I will be more excited about these games come January but right now I could really care less.
Monterrey/Cruz Azul is definetly mouth watering but I think with the Superliga, Interliga, and assorted friendlies could the market be getting saturated with Mexican league teams?
One of the great rivalries in world soccer takes place on Wednesday between Roman clubs Lazio and Roma, this is can’t miss viewing.
FREE KICK MASTERS event has been moved to July 5th due to European schedules, in fact this date makes more sense.
Josh Gardner who spent three years with the LA Galaxy and won an MLS Cup and last year won the USL title with the Seattle Sounders is heading on trial to Sweden.
Don’t forget the Dynamo Power Hour on Wednesday at 7-9pm and the Dynamo Soccer Report on Channel 55 this Friday at 6pm but most importantly get out to Robertson Stadium for the DYNAMO VS FC DALLAS Friday night.

  1. In regards to InterLiga, no, it’s not saturated. Fans are (now) guaranteed to see their team(s) in the US during InterLiga and SuperLiga. Friendlies are always hit and miss and most fans would agree that friendlies aren’t the same as Tournaments. I’m only dissapointed that Frisco gets 2 IL games, Cali 4, and us 1. I wish it was 2, 2, 3 instead.

Besides, as I posted in BS, I can go ahead and mark my calender and bring out all my US/MLS gear and start cheering against those teams while enjoying great futbol.

    Just MHO.

  2. Off-topic pet peeve of the day: if you don’t care about something, your level of caring is so low that you “couldn’t care less.” (Not “could care less” which means that your level of caring could drop, suggesting your level of caring could be quite high.)

Improving communication one peeve at a time…

Having said all that, I couldn’t care less about Interliga right now either.

  3. Unscientifically, it seems as if the Interliga contests are drawing less each successive time in Houston. With so many of the Mexican league games on TV and many years of exhibitions, I wonder if it is getting saturated. I also think FMF fans can sniff out when the “B Team” is coming. The Superliga was outstanding because it was meaningful, feisty competition. The Interliga is kind of a more meaningful US Open Cup. The international contests with the Dynamo were the best games of the year at Robertson which is why it was great for the Dynamo to finish top 4 in MLS to qualify for 2008 Superliga.

  4. Dunno why I’m defending FMF as I don’t follow the league but…..

JJ - It would be interesting to see the numbers for the past 5 years and compare. Compare it on location and as a whole. Maybe there is a reason why California is getting more games than us. However, this is a bit more important than the USOC. It has a Libertadores spot for the winner!! (Not sure I spelled that right :/ ) That is huge! If this were a MLS competition, it’d be a huge deal. Yes, it is between season for the FMF, early Spring season for them, but they do want that as the Copa L has huge $$ in it.

Right now, from what I understand from FMF fans, they could care less about the SuperLiga. They just want their teams to put a beating on the US teams because they are tired of seeing the NT can beat. That doesn’t represent everyone, obviously, but it seems to sum up quite a few.

It’ll be fun none-the-less, assuming the weather holds

  5. FKM moved to July of 2008 ???? I’ve checked all the possible websites (bigsoccer.com, FKM.com, etc.) and I see nothing regarding the 7-month move/delay except on THIS website. What gives ? Where did this information come from ????

  6. Naranja, I was probably a little harsh on Interliga but I think the point is that they just can’t throw out two FMF teams in Houston and expect to draw. I was suprised more America supporters did not come out for Superliga.

I’ll be there in Feb. to cheer on USA vs. Mexico

  7. True true, and both Bernardo Fallas of the Chron and Glenn have said repeatedly that SUM needs to advertise these games instead of assuming that fans will show up and hear about it “somehow”. They have been very critical of them on that front and I agree.

With proper advertising, you will see crowds of around 20K+ easily.
