Breaking down the trade

The Soccer Hour Alejandro MorenoLet’s face it. Many of you based on phone calls and emails were frustrated with Alejandro Moreno and wanted more. Last year when Brian Ching was out injured and goals were not flowing many criticized Alejandro. Lets not forget he was a part of history on opening night last year with his bicycle kick to compliment Ching’s four goal devastation of Colorado.
Lets examine this trade. First and formost Moreno was great at protecting a ball and fending off defenders. Many times it lead to free kicks which we all know is a huge weapon for the defending MLS Cup Champions. His ability to hold the play up also enabled his team to move up the field in support .
He didn’t necessarily create many chances for himself and in fact that was not the strength of his game. He didn’t play the game facing an opponents goal much that is for sure. In fact for me his first intention was to earn a foul and his second was to think about goals. A possession player he was. He has served a valuable role coming off the bench and managing games for the Dynamo in the final minutes. He also put in a very solid performance in midfield in the first leg against Pachuca that earned a historic Dynamo result. In the end $120,000 for a player coming off the bench in MLS is too much. Sigi Schmid obviously wants his ability to hold the ball up front and let’s see how that will work with Guillermo Barros Schelotto in Columbus. Alejandro was always professional with me during media related items and I wish him the best of luck in Columbus.
Joseoph Ngwenya brings youth, mobility and versatility and lower salary of around $50,000 and increased the overall team speed of the Houston Dynamo.
